ET,

Yes, your doctor is right. If you start a new pack of pills when you would normally take the reminder pills, you won't get a period. Since your body will continue getting the same dose of hormones without a break, your period won't come when it's due. Some people do this for months at time and only get a period a few times a year, but I think it's better to do this only occasionally, like in your case. Have fun scuba diving!

Hi again Holly. Thanks for the reply. My next question would be can I delay my period if I continue the pills? I asked my doc and he said that I could continuously take the pills without taking the 7 day break, then the P would not come till I stop after the next 21 days. Just want to verify, as I will be scuba diving the time my period is due and I don't want that!! Thanks again!

ET, stopping your pill after two weeks will make your cycle irregular and could cause some bleeding, but it won't necessarily bring your period on. Even though your cycle was regular, it will be affected this month by the hormones, so it's a flip of the coin either way to say whether you'll get your period right away.

Dear Holly, I'm a first time pill user. My last period started on Oct 6, then I started Yasmin on Oct 14th. I would like to know if I stop taking the pill after 2 weeks, will my period come over the next few days? My periods are usually pretty regular ie if it falls on the 6th, then for the next 6 months it will fall on the 6th despite the even and odd months. Appreciate your advise.

Chloe,

there is almost always a chance, even though you took the morning after pill. Emergency contraception is about 80 percent effective, so you should take a home pregnancy test to give you a better idea.

But, I think it's more likely that your cycle is thrown off by the EC and starting the Yaz mid cycle. Since your doctor suggested that you take the pill in the middle of your regular cycle, you should give him a call to confirn when you should expect your next period.

i was prescribed yasmin by my doctor after going to him to get the morning after pill on the 11th day of my cycle, i took the morning after pill and started yasmin on this day and took the entire strip correctly without missing any days, i was having intercourse during this time but using a condom as my doctor recommended for the first 2 weeks, i am now on the third day of my pill free week and have not gotten my period, is there any chance i could be pregnant?

Nervous, medical professionals do recommend that you use back up birth control during the first month that you are on the pill. Since you started it a few days after your period, it might cause you to be a few days late. If you don't get it another day or so, take a test to see if you could be pregnant. If you're not pregnant, call your doctor to find out when you should start taking your next pack.

I started my period on aug 13, a thursday and then started my first pack of Yasmin that Sunday, the 15th. I've taken every pill everynight between 10 - 12pm, with the exception of one night when I took it at 2AM. Now its the fourth day of my "white pill" week and still no period. the second day I had some moderate breast tenderness and yesterday and last night and today I've been having these moderate - severe cramps but still no period. Could I be preggo???

Enter,

if you are already taking Yasmin, you should continue taking it as normal. It is not, however, an emergency contraception and will only protect you from pregnancy if taken over the course of the month. There is an over-the-counter morning after pill, but it needs to be taken the day after intercourse.

But, if you have a regular cycle, you probably won't conceive from sex on the 13th. Most women ovulate 14 days after their period begins, putting your most fertile time around the 22nd.

i just had my period aug8 - aug 11 then i had contact with my boyfriend aug 13. is it still safe or do i need to take yasmin asap? i never used pills before. can i consider yasmin as an emergency contraceptive pill. pls advise thanks

Irish, starting the birth control pill after you had sex isn't going to have any effect at preventing pregnancy. It sounds like you are in the middle of your cycle. Do you know the start date of your last period? If you are around day 14 you do have a chance at having conceived this month. Take a test when your period is due and start the pill right on day 1. It is only effective if taken every day of the month.

Alexis,

first, you need to talk to your doctor about the amount of pills you took. Although it's okay to take an extra pill if you missed you, you shouldn't be taking 14 in 7 days. Between taking the extra pills and the fact that you started the pack mid-cycle, you can't rely on having any birth control protection right now. If you don't want to get pregnant, you definitely need to use another form of birth control until your cycle returns to normal and you start taking the pill at the right time.

Shivaanie,

it's rare to conceive during your pregnancy, especially if you are on the pill. It could happen, though, if a woman is taking antibiotics or has a very unusual cycle.

my apology. i have to state the date to help you answer my troubling situation now. my last contact was june 29. i've finished 1 pack on july 2, then after few days i had menstruation. after 7 days (july 10) i had to start another pack, BUT I DIDN'T (as i decided not to take pills).there was no contact within these days. again, last contact was june 29. i suddenly decided to take pills (which i knew was wrong)on July 16, and taking 2 pills in a day (am & pm)until i've consumed 14 pills in 1 week. during this time there was no contact, ONLY UNTIL july 23 i had contact again fr the last contact which was june 29. (then, from july 23, i continously taking pills one pill daily until i finished 1 pack). is there a possibility that i am pregnant? and will have contact again today july 30. please advise.

Can i get pregnant during the 7 day period of menstral cycle without protection after using the pill within the 21 days

Srcka, you should ask your pharmacist or doctor about when to start the next pack of pills. I think you should start them as normal and hope that your body catches back up. If you stay off the pills, you may continue to have irregular bleeding and unpredictable periods, especially if you restart the pill later. But, your pharmacist or doc knows what's best.

I have been using Yasmin for over 6 months now. Everything was nice and fine and I love them. But: During the last package of 21 pill, I forgot to take one in the third week, and the next day I continued with the pack. Unfortunately, after 1 day, I got my period. I continued with the pills, despite the bleeding, until the pack was finished. Then I stopped with the pills, for the 4th week. What I didn't read is that I should have taken the forgoten pill immediately when I remembered, even if it means that I take 2 at once. So, now my bleeding continues for 10 days and seems like it has no intention to stop. There was no pain before, but now a pain appeared that is not like any menstrual pain I had before.

I should start the next pack on Monday. What should I do? How do I stop the bleeding, since I already made so many mistakes :( Thanks!

Curious, as long as there are no other health concerns to prevent a young women from taking the pill, Yasmin should fine. It might also be taken by women who have irregular cycles and need to regulate their period.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

is yasmin safe for young women to use as well?

-- Contributed by: curious

Kish, I wouldn't recommend it. Emergency birth control, like Plan B is available over the counter at your pharmacy and is the best route to take. Any other medication considerations should be discussed with your doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

can yasmin be used as substitute for emergency contraceptive pills? taking into consideration an increase in its dose like 5 pills at the same time and 5 again after 12 hrs?

Karen, have you mentioned your weight flucuations to your doctor? 32 pounds is a lot to lose and gain without trying so you should make sure there isn't any other health issue that could be causing it.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

when my doctor switched me to Yasmin I lost 32 pounds in 8 months and it stayed off for about a year and then it all piled back on one to two pounds a week with no change in my diet or exercise plan. Very Furstrating!!!

Zaineb, the pill is effective throughout the whole month, even during the week of inactive pills. Those pills are simply there as a reminder and don't decrease the effectiveness of the pill so, assuming you took the pill as directed during the month, there is no reason to avoid intercourse during that week.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I am taking Yasmin 28. So I take 3 weeks of the actual pill and 1 week of reminder pills. My question is.. during that one week.. should I be avoiding intercourse?

Til, Yaz, like any pill is usually taken in 21 or 28 day cycles, so I'm not sure if your girlfriend stopped midcycle. If she did, it can definitely affect her period and cause her to be late since her body is now adjusting back to it's normal cycle.

Since she is late, she should take a pregnancy test to ease both of your minds, but she is probably not pregnant if you haven't had sex since she went off the pill.

My girlfriend took Yasmin for 40 days. Do you think that she is pregnant? I mean after 40 days she didn’t take Yasmin anymore. And after that we hadn’t sex and now it is 20 days that she isn’t period yet! What is going on?!?

-- Contributed by: til

Keri, after the first month of taking the pill regularly, you can rely on them for birth control protection. It's during the first month or if you miss a dose that you need to use a backup.

Although Yaz is often noted for it's ability to clear up acne, it's not always a guarantee that it's going to work for everyone. If you are bothered by it, your doctor might be able to recommend a prescription strength cream or antibiotic to help clear it up. But remember that using an antibiotic while you are on the pill means you need to use a back-form of birth control.

I have been on Yasmin for over 2 months now, my brests have gotten a little larger, but my achne hasn't cleared or improved yet. But i was wondering, how long I have to be on the pill taking them properly, to be safe to have sex with my boyfriend? thanks so much :D

Triplets, there are a lot of things that can affect the pill, but studies show that a lower dose pill is as effective as regular birth control pills.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I'd been on Yasmin for 2 years...and while still on the pill, I am now 23 weeks pregnant with Triplets, and it does NOT run in the family...maybe this lower hormone thing can be a little dangerous?

-- Contributed by: Triplets

Kate, according to their website, Yasmin is 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. That's assuming, of course, that it's taken as intended at the same time every day without any other medications that can interfere with it, like antibiotics.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I'm just wondering exactly how effective Yasmin is, I know it's not 100%, just wondering.

Tess, there isn't link that I can find between Yaz and your bladder infections, but Yaz is typically the pill doctors recommend to avoid the bloating and other PMS symptoms you are looking to avoid. Maybe your doctor can recommend other non-pill based birth control methods.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have used yasmin for 8 months now and have been twice in hospital with bladder infections that keeps coming back, even with the use of antibiotics. I left the tablets for two months and had no infections or pain during that time, which made me think (even after the doctor said it cant be) that yasmin is to blame for that.

Is there any other pill that you can suggest that wont leave me depressed, fat, bloated and without a sex drive?

-- Contributed by: Tess

Winsome, you might be able to get a sample or two from your doctor or a local clinic, but the pill is only available as a prescription.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Can i get the pill without a prescription

-- Contributed by: Winsome

Doreen, I just looked this up and found other instances of women losing their hair while on Yaz. Other women, however, who had previous hair loss attributed to hormone problems. It looks like women who have hair loss on a birth control pill can usually switch to a different pill without the same problem occuring.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I was taking yasmin for a months when i notice my hair falling out, did not suspect the pill until one morning i was washing my hair and saw the amount in the sink i look in the mirror i had no hair before my pillows would have alot of hair. I only took it for 3months jan-mar 06 my hair has grown back since then even though my DR.disagree with me. never loss my hair before and i was not taking any other meds.Anyway the these pills did help me.
