Ashley,

you should wait until your next period is due before taking a test. It's unlikely that you would have conceived from sex at the end of your period since most women don't ovulate until two weeks later, but it's always a good idea to test to make sure.

Hello,

I had sex last sat and i believe that was also the last day of my period. I still had spotting on sunday so I'm not sure. Can I take a home test in two weeks or do I have to wait a whole month to find out?
-- Contributed by: Ashley

Agt,

taking a pregnancy test is your first step. In fact, most doctors offices will tell you to take one based on your late period before they'll see you. Since you know it's late, you should be able to get an accurate result now. Good luck.

i have been experiencing extra trips to the bathroom and my breasts hurt horribly. i cant remember when my last period was but i know it was over 30 days ago. i keep waiting for my period but am terrified for it to never appear...should i go to a doctor instead of the home pregnancy test route?

Help,

if she has a regular cycle, she can take a test on the day her period is due. Soem pregnancy tests, like the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test gives accurate results four days before the expected period, but if it's negative she should wait a few days and test again.

Okay so here's the thing my friend (minor) had unprotected sex. When should she take a pregnancy test?

Hi there,

if you haven't already, you should take a pregnancy test. Since you missed a period, it's possible that you are pregnant. If it's negative, wait a few days and test again.

hi my last period was on the 24th dec was heavier than usall and only lasted 1day!! my periond was due on the 22nd of jan and still ahsnt come!! my periods have been regualer all my life please help

Angela, if you had implantation bleeding a month ago, you should have gotten a positive pregnancy test by now. Did you get a period after the spotting? If so, you are not pregnant. Most pregnancy tests can be used anytime after the first day of your missed period, so you don't need to keep waiting unless you got a regular period.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I had what I believe to be implantation bleeding, with a pinkish discharge, lasting once in a day for a couple of days, which also came 6 days before my monthly period. I've taken 5 hpt's, which have all shown a negative result. Next Tuesday will be a month since I've experienced the spotting, which I plan to retest on this day. My question is, I've never experienced implantation bleeding with my first 2 pregnancies, so this is very confusing to me. With that said, should I test on that day, or should I wait? I mean, I've waited this long, and I'm really working hard at being patient. Thank you for your help...Angela

Haley, a pregnancy test can usually be taken the day your period is due. But, if you don't think that was your period, you could take a test now. It's hard to say what your symptoms are pointing to, but since you are on the pill and didn't have sex during your likely ovulation time, you are probably not pregnant.

But, since you are on an antibiotic this month, you should use a backup form of birth control this month since you may be likely to ovulate.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

hi, I had unprotected sex a week before my period and then the day before my period (I'm on birth control pills though). I got my period but it was only heavy for two to three days and then it was what seemed like spotting. I have been naseas all this week (period was last week) but I don't have tender breasts or bloating. I also started amoxicillin last Friday for a sinus infection and the side effects are nausea. When can I take a test since my period was so short??

-- Contributed by: Haley

Sally, starting the new pack of pills a day early might cause your period to be irregular this month, but it shouldn't make much of a difference. It's unlikely that you would have ovulated and conceived since you didn't miss any pills, you simply started them early.

Since your latest period was OCtober 11, you wouldn't even have the potential to conceive this month until the 25th. YOu can take a pregnancy test when your next period is due to ease your mind, but you're probably not pregnant.

Hi, I forgot to list what my symptoms are- I have had slight cramping, this happened about 3 days after my period and lasted a few days, but has stopped, I have had constipation for about 5 days, I have had headaches for about a week, but I sometimes get headaches frequently, but usually not this much. I have been bloated and feel like I am getting bigger, and I just feel pregnant. I have also been very tired, but I usually am. I stress a lot, so I dont know if these sings are just from me stressing about being pregnant or if they are actual signs. Thank You again.

-- Contributed by: sally

Hi, I have been taking the pill for about 2 years and I usually start about three days into my inactive pills. About a month ago I started a new pack of pills after only taking four inactive pills, so therefore I had already started my period. I just had a period that started on october 11th. Could I be pregnant and when is the earliest I can take a pregnancy test? thank you!

-- Contributed by: sally

Neselle, you can get pregnant from having semen come in contact with your vagina. I'm not clear on when your period was due, was it September 14? If so, you could definitely get a positive result on a pregnancy test. If your period isn't due yet, you should wait until the day it's due to use a pregnancy test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I had oral sex with my boyfriend and some how we ended up naked and his penis was in my vagina but he didnt stick it. Pre-... came out like this clear fluid. I know that it is possible for sperm to be contained in that clear fluid. I saw it come out and he didnt. After I saw it come out he put it in, but not inserting. It has been 21 days since then, and I supposed to start my period on the 14th of that day and now its the 4th of october. How soon can I take a pregnancy test? Or could it be possible for me to be pregnant?? Plz help me :(

-- Contributed by: Neselle

Melissa, it's really hard to say what's going on. It's sound to me like you got your period but it was very light. If you are pregnant and that was implantation bleeding, you can take a pregnancy test now and expect accurate results.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

ok, ovulation test showed positive for 9 days, i know not possible to ovulate that long. usually have 4-5 day periods, first day light 2and 3rd heavy fourth light. started right day but spotted bled for one day and then spotted. could i be pregnant because of ovulating late and it just not show up yet on an hpt. PLEASE HELP!!

Nix, although not common, there are several reasons that a woman could get a [Pregnancy Test False Positives|false positive]] on a pregnancy test, including impurities in the test, taking certain medications like anticonvulsants, or even having a tumor. Some women misinterpret an evaporation line on a pregnancy test as a positive, leading them to think they are pregnant. You're correct that fertility treatments can cause a false positive if taken too early, but they are not the only cause of a false positive.

As for your second comment, Pregnancy Bleeding is common for many women. However, I would need to know specifically which article you are referring to so I can accurately respond to your post.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

HollySwanson

I am sorry to dispute Danahinders article and some of your responses but there are some glaring inaccuracies:

The only way to get a false positive on one of these tests is if you have had fertility treatment and were required to inject HCG hormone before the eggs were collected. If you test too early after treatment then the home pregnancy test may show a positive reading from the HCG that you injected and not from an implanted embryo. The rule of thumb is that the HCG injection is processed by your body at an average rate of 1000iu a day. Therefore if you injected 10000iu, you should wait a minumum of 10 days before doing an HPT, otherwise any positive result cannot be relied upon. Also some people may process the hormone more slowly and therefore are still at risk of a false positive which is why most clinics will advise you to wait a minimum of 14 days after the injection before testing. Once the embryo has implanted you should start producing your own HCG which will, on average, double every 48 hours and it is this which indicates a pregnancy. So to sum up, you can get false negatives for the reasons that were suggested in the article, but NEVER a false positive as an HPT is only set up to detect HCG and cannot give a positive result for a hormone that isn't there!

Secondly, you told a questioner that it was unlikely she was pregnant as she'd had some bleeding. You went on to specify that unless it was very light implantation bleeding, then it must have been her period, therefore she probably wasn't pregnant. (I am not quoting word for word here so forgive me if I am not accurately representing exactly what you said, but that was the general gist of it). Ladies, please be advised that it is possible to bleed THROUGHOUT pregnancy and still give birth to a healthy child. There are many do...ented cases of this and a quick read through the chat boards of my particular favourite fertility site (fertilityfriends.co.uk) shows many individuals who have experienced this personally. Bleeding, even heavy bleeding is NOT proof that you are not pregnant, a negative/very low quantative Beta HCG blood test is. This blood test tells you the precise amount of the HCG hormone in your blood as opposed to an HPT which only tells you whether it's there or not, but not how much. And a depreciating Beta, sadly, indicates an imminent miscarriage. So if you have reason to believe you may be pregnant, even though you are bleeding you should ideally do an HPT and if there is any lingering doubt ask your doctor/clinic for a beta HCG blood test.

Kind regards

Private, the day after you have your period is not really a good time to take a pregnancy test. If you suspect that the period was actually spotting related to pregnancy or implantation, you should wait at least another week or so and take a test then.

As you noted, it's unusual to get a positive result right after your period, but it happens for some women.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Can you take a pregnancy test the day after you HAVE your period? I know its rare for women to have a period if they are pregnant .. but it happens. Please help!

-- Contributed by: Private

Laqweita, you can take a pregnancy test around the time your period is due to find out if you conceived. The First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test is effective four days before your period is due to give you even earlier results.

i have a question to ask, i was on the nuva ring for about 7 months and i just stop useing the ring and i had sex with my boyfriend the condom broke ,what should i do. i want to have a baby by him and we've have been trying for a while now! i really want a baby.

-- Contributed by: laqweita

Rachel, since your period ended two weeks ago, you should be ovulating right around now, so it's definitely too early to take a test unless you have an irregular cycle. Breast tenderness and tiredness is not typically among the Signs of Ovulation and pregnancy symptoms don't usually start for two weeks after ovulation. So, I'd assume you're not pregnant right now, but you can take the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test four days before your period is due.

Holly, My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for quite some time now, without any luck. My period ended about two weeks ago, but now I'm having extreme breast tenderness, and they appear to be swollen. I've been having headaches and feeling a bit faint as well. I took a couple cheap pregnancy tests (which I've been doing ever since my husband and I have been having unprotected sex) and they've come out negative. Could I really be pregnant and it's too early to test, or is this just pms 2 weeks early?

-- Contributed by: Rachel

Crissy, having two positive a pregnancy tests is a pretty definite sign that you are pregnant. If you had sex with your partner around the time you ovulated and conceived, you could definitely be experiencing symptoms now.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

hello i have been feelig sick lately and i took 2 home preganancy tests. both say positive but ti seems to early i have only been with my partner 3 weeks is that possible to show that early?

-- Contributed by: crissy

Rebecca,

yes, you could be pregnant. Antibiotics interfere with the effectiveness of the pill, so you should take a pregnancy test since your period is already late.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I got a sinus infection, so i started taking azithromyacin or however you spell it for my infection... My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex while i've been on the antibiotics several times. I am on birth control, but yesterday is supposed to be the first day of my period and i still haven't started yet... do you think i could be pregnant?

-- Contributed by: rebecca

Talia, if you had sex during your period, you are very unlikely to be pregnant. Many of the early signs of pregnancy can be confused with other things, like PMS or the flu. If you think you might be pregnant, you should take a pregnancy test when your period is due before contacting your doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i was wondering if you had sex in january and it was my time of the month and i had missed a week of my period and i had my period but i have pregnancy symptoms should i go to the doctor

-- Contributed by: talia

Abbie, a pregnancy test can be taken on the first day of your missed period, which would be two weeks after you ovulated. If you had sex around the time of ovulation, that's when you would have conceived.

If you had sex earlier in the month, you will still need to wait until your period is due to take a test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i was wondering, if u are bein sexualy active and u fail to wear a comdom, how long after, would be the best time to get a pregnacy test done?

-- Contributed by: abbie

Leslie, if you had sex right around the time of ovulation and you conceived, you could take a pregnancy test two weeks later and expect to get accurate results. Since your period usually comes two weeks after ovulation, that's when you should plan to take a test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

alright. but can you take a test 1-3 weeks after you have sex? will it work?

-- Contributed by: Leslie

Tera,

I've never heard about HCG levels being too high, I believe the test will show a positive as long as there is any presence of HCG. It doesn't matter how much is there.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I was wondering if there is a certain point in pregnancy when the hcg levels are too high to get a positive result. I know that the threshold on many is 25 for the hcg and was wondering where the upper cut off was. Thanks!

-- Contributed by: Tera

Shantee,

I don't think the infection would affect your period, but if you have other health issues or are certain medications, that might make it late. Women's periods can be late for lots of reasons so there's really no way to know. You might want to take another pregnancy test for a second opinion to make sure you didn't get a false negative.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hey my period is 2 weeks late but a couple of weeks ago i had a urinary tract infection. My boyfriend and i had sex and he also ejaculated in me 2 different times. I took a test it was negative. Could the infection be the cause of my lateness?

-- Contributed by: Shantee

Marie, I think you just had a short period this month. Having sex doesn't have any influence on the length of your period, I think it was just a fluke. If you are really concerned or have been having any early signs of pregnancy like morning sickness, go ahead and take a pregnancy test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I posted a few days agot about me trying to conceive on day 11,12, and 13 after my menstrual cycle and i told u i got my period a week early. Well my period lasted two days only which is weird to me. Did having sex change my cycle or is there an explanation for this? I did bleed regular like any other period except it went away in 2 days which has never happened before. Should i test or is this normal?

-- Contributed by: Marie

Sheree, if your period is due today and you haven't gotten it yet, this is the time to take a pregnancy test. I know a negative result would be disappointing, but at least you'll know for sure rather than waiting for a few days and wondering.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Marie, since you got what I assume is your period this month, you are probably not pregnant. There is always the possibility that what you thought was your period was actually implantation bleeding, but that is usually a lot lighter and wouldn't be confused with a full period.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hello, my husband and I have bee trying to have a baby for a year now, we have a 5 year old son and now it's very difficult to get pregnant. We had intercourse on my fertile days and my period was due today but im too nervous to see yet another negative sign. When should i test? If i am pregnant i would be 4 weeks, what to do?

-- Contributed by: Sheree

Me and my boyfriend tried to conceive around day 11,12, and 13 after my period and this month i got my period a week earlier then i should have. Is there a reason why? He ejaculated in me all 3 days and a week after my period occured and i wasnt expecting it for another week, just wondering if the possibilites of being pregnant are impossible since it came early.

-- Contributed by: Marie

Marleine, was the bleeding you had around the time you should have gotten your period? If it was, then it sounds like you are just having a weird cycle this month. Many things, like stress, diet, and medications, can affect your menstrual cycle. Hopefully it will go back to normal.

But, if the bleeding you had was earlier than your normal period, you may have had false negative if you took a pregnancy test too soon. Try taking the test when your period is late by a day or two.

Hi< my boyfiend and i always have unprotacted sex. and about 3 weeks before i exspected my period i started feeling sick. i had that vomitting feeling, i was cramping in my lower abdoman( band mind you i never get cramps). i started getting headaches that would'nt last long and feeling just sick at times. Then i got my period or wat i thought was my period it ;lasted about 2 1/2 - 3 days and i was surprised bbecause its usually 5-7 days. i took apregnancy test and it tested negative, but im still feeling sick and i've been off for about a week now. What's wrong with me? wat should i do?

-- Contributed by: marleine

Brittany, you don't mention when you took the pregnancy test, but around November 23 would have been late enough for you to try and get accurate results. If you still don't have your period now, try another test, but if it's still negatives you are probably not pregnant.

Sometimes what seems like the early signs of pregnancy can be misleading since they can also be related to PMS or the flu.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi! My boyfriend and I have been trying to get pregnant for about 8 months now and nothing has happened yet! My last period was october 26. When November came I didn't have a period. I took two tests and they both came back negative. I am experiencing a couple pregnancy signs. Did I test too early?

-- Contributed by: Brittany

Brittany, since you are pretty regular and your period is now almost a month late, I'd recommend that you take another home pregnancy test, maybe a different brand. It's possible that you are pregnant but got a false negatives on your test, or maybe something else has affected your period this month, causing it to be late.

Keep in mind that some of the earliest signs of pregnancy can easily be confused with other things, like a cold or the flu.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi! My boyfriend and I have been trying to have a baby for about 9 months now. Finally I got a missed period. My last period was Oct. 26. Every month it is on the 26th. I haven't had a period since. On November 9th I spotted but by the end of the night it was gone. So today I went and bought a pregnancy test, the first response kind and it gave me a negative result. I have some of the pregnancy signs, what do I do? I want a baby!

-- Contributed by: Brittany

Ashley, whether or not you conceived depends a lot on how regular your period and when you might ovulate. Most women ovulate about 14 days after their period. If you are trying to conceive, I'd tell you to have sex again in another 2-3 days.

But, sperm can live for a day or two in the women's body, so it can still fertilize an egg during that time. Having sex at day 11 may be a good time to try for a pregnancy but you'll need to wait another 2 weeks before you can take a pregnancy test and know for sure.

Hi, My Boyfriend Ejaculated in me two times yesterday which was day 11th after having my period. What are the chances of me getting pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Ashley

KrZyJr, although it's not likely, a woman could get pregnant right after her period. Most women ovulate two weeks after their period, but some women have irregular cycles or could ovulate at a different time.

The cramping you mention might just be regular period-related cramps but some woman do have cramping as an early sign of pregnancy, it's too early to know right now. She can take a pregnancy test when her period is due, and some can even be used in the days before a period.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My girfriend got off her period and two days later we had sex and i fully ejaculated in her. It's been 6 days now and she starting cramping a little bit. Is it possible to get pregnant 2 days after her period? And how long till she can take the pregnancy test? And does cramping have anything to do with being pregnant?

-- Contributed by: KrZyJr

Brittany,

since your last period was long, I'm not surprised that this one is off the mark too. It may take a while for your period to get back to normal, especially with your history of cysts.

The cramping and discharge could be some of the early signs of pregnancy, but it could also be signs of ovulation, especially if your body hasn't done that in a while and is getting back on track. The false results on your home pregnancy test spund pretty convincing to me, bit it wouldn't hurt to take another test if you doubt the results.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

my period is two weeks late today...i have taken two hpt and they both were negative...my last period lasted like a month tho because i was just getting off the shot. Not that long ago i was in and out of the hospital due to a cyst rupturing on my ovaries and i guess they thought i might have PID. I have NEVER been late on a period before besides the last time iwas pregnant. Now im two weeks late but my hpt's are showing negative? Could something be wrong with me? I have also had some period cramping like im going to start then it will go away and alot of clear discharge.

-- Contributed by: brittany

Hi Imran, if her periods are regular, she's probably not pregnant since she wasn't ovulating during that time, but you will need to wait until the day of her next period to take a pregnancy test and trust the results. Anytime you have sex and don't want to conceive, you should be using some form of birth control so you don't have to worry about this every month.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I had dry sex with my girlfriend couple of days ago. Unfortunately, i ejaculated on her side of underpants. She had just finished her monthly cycle a week ago. Can she get pregnant in this manner. How long should we wait to take a test..

Thanks

-- Contributed by: ImranSadbar

Sounds like her period came a bit early on the 14 with a lighter flow and then it picked up on the 15th. I think she is just having menstrual symptoms, which can certainly make the body "weird."

But since you're nervous, have her take a pregnancy test to put your minds at ease. I'd say to go ahead and do it now and test again in a few days to double check the results.

Good luck (p.s. use condoms if you're that concerned and don't trust her pill)

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex on the 5th and then the 13th and 14th she said she was bleeding a little bit. She is on birth control pills and her period was supposed to occur on the 15th. She thought her period did occur because the bleeding was heavier than the previous days. Then she said that her period is abnormal and her body feels weird. Is she pregnant? Should she take a pregnancy test? If so, when? Thanks

-- Contributed by: Ronnie Hinson

Nicole, if you were ovulating on the 2nd and conceived during that time, you should be able to take a pregnancy test around this weekend since that will give you a good two weeks after conception.

Do you know when your next period is due? If you do, you can take the test on the day your period is due, some tests even can be used a few days earlier than that.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

okay i had sex the 2 and i was ovulatin and dont know when i should take a test.

-- Contributed by: nicole

Jayden, like a home pregnancy test, the blood test looks for the pregnancy hormone, HCG. Typically, it takes 7 days after fertilization for the HCG to show up. So if you conceived on the 8th, the 13th would be too early for it to show up. At the earliest, you might be able to get a result on the 15th.

Since conception can happen up to 48 hours after you had sex, it might take a few more days for it to register. So if the test on the 13th didn't show Signs of Pregnancy, don't be too disappointed. Wait a few more days and take a home test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have a question i had sex on the 8th when i was ovulating, and i had to get a lood test the 13th would that be too soon to tell wether i am pregnant? i do have all the signs, but would a blood test register?

-- Contributed by: jayden

Michelle, it's really too soon to tell if you are pregnant since you might only be 10 days along. You probably won't have any symptoms for at least another week or two. Wait about a week and take a pregnancy test. Good luck!

Lolo, so you had your period for 4 days, got the shot on Day 5, and felt ovulation pain the same day, right? The Depo Provera shot will only prevent you from ovulating when it is given before you ovulate. If you truly ovulated the same day you got the shot, you could be pregnant. Take a home pregnancy test to be sure and talk to you doctor about your cycle before you get another shot.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

hi.. on july i used b/c pills (COCs) & had my period. then on my 5th day of my cycle i had my 1st depo provera shot (2nd of Aug).as my bleeding stopped on the 4th day. i had unprotected sex from day of the shot till now. could i be pregnant?(same day of the shot i felt the ovulation pain.. )

Hi Amy, I'm confused as to whether your period is 2 months or 2 weeks late? But either way, irregular cycles can be fairly typical, though you should bring it up to your doc at your annual OB/GYN visit. If it's really troubling you, you should make an appointment and discuss with your doctor taking a birth control pill that will help regulate your cycle.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My period is late by almost 2 months and i had a period in July, and it lasted for 2 weeks straight. Havent had one since what do ya'll think?
