Kimberly, drinking alcohol can actually lower your chances of conceiving at all. I haven't seen anything that says alcohol can help produce a boy or girl, but it's probably not a good idea to try.

It has been shown that for some reptiles, the temperature at which fertilization and subsequent incubation occurs affects the ratio of males to females. It seems likely that the same holds true for other sexually reproduced species (i.e. humans). In my mind, it stands to reason that a study that looks at the absolute body temperature during fertilization and then tracks body temperature throughout the early stages of pregnancy would give similar results found in reptile studies. If true, and since absolute body temperature is an individualized characteristic, it's possible that women conceive males and females in individualized ratios.

I didn't go by any method but tried 5 days before ovulation. Result was a girl.

Jacoleen, Check out the article How to Conceive a Girl for tips, but you're right, these are just helpful tips and theories. There is no definite way to control your child's gender.

I tried the Shettles method and did conceive a boy, as planned. I would now like to have a girl and after reading these comments, am very confused! I conclude that prayer is the only way to go!!!

I would just like to say that I went by the Shettles methods, we tried on ovulation and I concieved 3 boys, then going for the girl I tried 6 days before ovulation thinking that it was plenty of time for all the male sperm to die, 9 months later I had another little boy, so I now must agree with the whelan method of 4 - 6 days for boy.
