Ethyl,

did you have a doctor examine you to make sure all the tissue had been removed? If not, that's your first step to make sure that your uterus is healthy and that you don't have any lasting infection. After that, you should talk to your doctor about any challenges she expects you to have. If several months pass without conceiving, you may need to consider taking a fertility medications.

i'm 29 and had an incomplete abortion last march..i'm trying to conceive until now..is there any tip you can give me?

Just wanted to check in with you, I am now 13weeks and 4 days pregnant, and our little "peanut" is right on track, was given a fetal movement/heartbeat monitor and it is so cool to listen to this special little one. Will check in again soon, hope that the next time we will now if were having a boy or a girl...

Starting, that's wonderful news! If you are interested, do a search for "home fetal heart monitors." These are small devices you can use at home to listen to and record your baby's heart beat. They can be purchased or rented. We rented one when I was pregnant with my son and it was fun to use.

Just wanted to check in and give an update, I am now 9weeks and 4 days pregnant, and was able to see our baby's heartbeat at my last appointment, have an sonogram scheduled at my next OBGYN appointment on 8/14/09, this time we should be able to hear our baby's heartbeat, as well as see how our little "peanut" is growing. We are so blessed, we will keep you updated.

Frustrated, have you tried using ovulation predictor kits? These over-the-counter sticks give you a good idea of when you ovulate so you can be sure to time intercourse right. If you continue trying for a few more months with no results, contact your doctor. He might want to do some fertility screening to see if there is a reason you are conceiving.

this is my first time reading and commenting..Reading everyones info is helping in the frustration department. My husband and I have been trying for about 4 months..the waiting until the next month.. the roller coaster ride is getting old. Any advice for the hopeless one? Any positive suggestions would be greatly appreciated..Good luck to all of you who are trying.

Starting, that's wonderful! Congratulations! Please let us know how your pregnancy is progressing.

It's me again, and this time I have great news, I have found out today that I am almost 4 weeks pregnant, my husband and I are so excited..Thank you for your encouragement.

Starting,

I have also heard, and was told by my doctor, that HSGs can increase your likelihood of conceiving, but it's based on anectdoctal evidence and isn't a scientific fact. Still, knowing that it's worked for other women is encouraging.

Hello again, Since my last e-mail I have had good news, all of my lab work has come back WNL as well as my endometrial biopsy and hysterosalpingogram all being normal. I am seeing my doctor on Wednesday and at that time he is going to start me on medication which hopefully help us make our dream of conceiving a reality. Also I would like to know is it true that the rate of conception actually can increase after the HSG test?

Starting,

some of the side effects of Synthroid can be found at this website, but any other specific questions about how it can affect you and your chances of conceiving should be addressed with your doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I already am taking 175mcg of synthroid daily, and all I was told is that the DHEA does something with Testosterone, and when it is low in men they usually have erectile dysfunction, but I am very cloudy on exactly what it is or does in women, and ironically when they repeated my blood work for the 3rd time it came back 504, which is in the normal range. Can you possibly help me shed a little light on this.

-- Contributed by: Starting to get discouraged

Starting, your doctor is the best person to talk to about what your DHEA numbers mean. If you have a thyroid condition, there are a number of medications that your doctor can prescribe to help with this.

If both you and your husband have fertility problems, you may need to consider a more aggressive form of reproduction assistance, like IVF and intrauterine insemination.

My husband and I went to the RE and I have had a multitude of tests done already, I still need to have a hysterosalpingogram done, but I have to wait for my period to start before it can be scheduled. I had quite a bit of blood work done and one of the hormones was elevated other than my thyroid, and that was DHEA, mine is 1289 and it should be less than 240 if I am remembering correctly. I have been trying to find out what this means in a woman, and how can it be fixed, could you please explain this to me if possible. Also FYI my husband is going to see a Urologist because his semen analysis came back low. Please keep your fingers crossed for us that everything works out well and that our ultimate dream becomes a reality. Thank you for any and all of your help.

-- Contributed by: Starting to get discouraged

Thank you for your suggestions, and I will keep you posted, and please keep your fingers crossed that it is something that can be fixed easily.

Starting to...,

since you've been trying for over a year, you are right to see a fertility doctor. The most important thing to do to increase your chances is to make sure you are timing intercourse properly. You can use an over-the-counter ovulation predictor to know when that is, but it's usually 14 days before your period. Sometimes, proper timing is all you need to conceive.

Hi, my husband and I have been trying to conceive for the past 17 months, I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis and am having my dosage adjusted 1x monthly until therapeutic, my periods are regular(24-28days), but they only last 3-4 days and on occasion they will last 5 days and be very, very light, we are starting to get concerned, and want a baby more than we can put into words. We have an appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist this Tuesday (3/24), but could you give me any suggestions that might help us to conceive, just any thoughts will do. Thank you in advance.

-- Contributed by: Starting to get discouraged...

Mari, there is no need to wait before trying to conceive. Some women will find that their fertility comes back quickly after stopping the pill but for others it can take longer. How long it can take to get pregnant after the pill varies in each woman.

Because of your age, you don't want to wait too long to find out if you have a fertility issue. This first month, you may want to use an over-the-counter ovulation predictor to find out if you are ovulating regularly. If you're not, call your doctor, who may start you on fertility drugs like Clomid.

Hi, I have been on BC Pills for just over 14years; my husband and I had agreed years ago not to have children. Well needless to say we both have changed our minds, I'm almost 38 and would like to have a child before I turn 39. I finished my last pack of bc pills last week and just today got my period. Just wondering how long should I wait before we try to conceive. I don't even honestly remember howmany days were between periods, I know I didn't have any problems prior to starting on the pills other than very bad cramps. Wondering how long to wait to start trying and curious to know IF it will happen for us and how long will it take. I know the last question might not be answered but can you advice about how long to wait before trying to conceive..... thanks! Mari

-- Contributed by: Mari

Heatherd, it can take a woman's cycle a few more to return to normal after being on the pill for a while. Read our How_Long_to_Get_Pregnant_if_You’ve_Been_on_the_Pill article for more on that.

In many cases, it will take several tries before you successfully conceive. YOu don't mention how late you are this month, but wait a few more days and test again. You might just be late and the cramps could indicate that your body is getting ready for a period.

Me and my husband decided to have a baby. We have to children but neither were planned. I have been off of birth control since my last period in July. My periods have been regular each month since then. I had my period two days late last month. This month I have not started at all. I have taken 3 pregnancy test and they all show up negative. My stomach is very crampy. I am not sure what to do. Should I be worried?

Naureen, do you have a specific question I can try to answer for you?

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

hi good all i read... i want also ask something about myself, trying to conceive but no effect.... thanx

-- Contributed by: naureen

Jennifer, I can imagine how frustrated you are, especially since there doesn't seem to be any obvious problem causing infertility. Since you mentioned acupuncture, I assume you are open to alternative health. You might want to try fertility herbs. Also, read this interview Traditional_Chinese_Medicine:_Interview_with_Linda_C._D'Agostino, which details how you can change your diet to make your body more likely to conceive.

My only other suggestion would be to have some tests redone. Depending on when the test is done, sperm count could have changed or been affected by other things.

Good luck!

I have been trying to conceive for 15 months. All my tests are fine, I have had my tubes checked and they are open, and my husbands sperm is good. I tried accupunture for 3 months, and I have been taking clomid for 4 months even though I do not have any ovulation issues. What else can I do? And is clomid the right thing for me?

-- Contributed by: Jennifer

Mrs Mann, There are many options available to women experiencing secondary infertility. The first you should consider is Clomid. That's usually one of the first medications doctor try to help couples conceive, but there are other medications that they can try.

As for other tips, there are herbs that you can try like chasteberry. You should also be monitoring your ovulation so you know the best time to try.

If none of these things work, your next step is assisted reproduction like IVF and intrauterine insemination that you can try.

Jenn,

sorry to hear abour your recent miscarriage. First, talk to your doctor about any concerns he or she may have about you trying to conceive. Some doctors recommend that you wait a few months after a miscarriage to allow your body to heal and return to its regular cycle.

If your doctor is not concerned or your passed the waiting period, you should consider charting your ovulation so you know the best time for intercourse. Using ovulation predictors can help you find the right window of opportunity determine the best time to get pregnant for you. Good luck!

I am 24 years old and wanting to have a baby with my boyfriend. We had gotten pregnant earlier this year but it ended in a late misscarriage at 15 weeks and 4 days gestation. I am just wondering how long it takes for conception after you have un-protected sex? It took us 13 months to conceive our son only for the pregnancy to last 3.5 months so I'd really like to find a way to possibly conceive sooner and carry to full term. any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Shoba, if you and your husband are ready to conceive, you should first see your doctor to make sure you don't have any health concerns. Your doctor will be able to advise you on other questions you may have about the length of your period.

When you are ready to try, you may want to track your ovulate by using monthly ovulation predictors. These will help you know when to time intercourse.

Sammy, if you are being seen by a fertility doctor, there isn't much more that I can tell you that he or she wouldn't already be helping you with. How many times have you tried intrauterine insemination? It's not unusual for it to take several tries before you finally conceive.

You might want to consider other assisted reproduction methods like IVF. In IVF, they combine your egg (or eggs) with your partner's sperm in a lab and then implant it into your uterus. That's usually the next thing to try after insemination. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Chrissy, that's one of the challenges to staying positive when you are trying to conceive. It often seems like we do everything by the book, including eating healthy, taking care of ourselves, and charting our cycle and we still end up without a baby. If you still aren't pregnant in a few more months, see your doctor, who might want to explore fertility problems.

I have endometriosis and my partner has a low sperm count we have tried Encemination and have had no luck, we also try ourselves on a monthly bases. It has been over a year.... any advice??

My partner and i have been trying to conceive a baby for about 7 months now, and other people have been getting pregnant. People who drink way too much, smoke marijuana, and other things. Why is it that i dont do any of these things, but yet they get pregnant before i do??

-- Contributed by: Rebecca

Hi Carina, I know how frustrating it is when you don't know how to plan around ovulation, ovulation. Have you tried using any ovulation tests or charting your body temperature? Although it might take a while for you to see a trend, it could help.

Your doctor might also be able to put you on some medication or check to make sure there aren't any other factors contributing to your fertility problems. Woman are usually diagnosed with infertility after a year of unsuccessfully trying to conceive so try for a few more months and give your doc a call.
