Smarlet,

can you walk around or is the pain too much? Walking is one of the best ways to induce labor. Keep in mind that due dates are usually just estimates, they can often be off by a few days. Afterall, your baby doesn't know it's due and there's no way to get him or her to cooperate with your schedule.

Talk to your doctor since you're already having labor pain. If he feels you are far enough along, he may decide to induce earlier than 40 weeks.

HELP>>>>>>>36 weeks pregnant with my third child....I have been having contractions roughly every 2 hours now since friday{now its sunday 12pm}how can i speed this up...

Viv, I don't recommend taking castor oil. When you think about the digestion system, it makes sense that castor oil causes diarrhea, but not that it will help labor start. It also makes many people sick. Since you are still active, continue walking and trying to get a moderate amount of exercise. Once you hit 40 weeks, talk to your doctor about induction ideas.

I am 39weeks and 2days pregnant with my first child and am anxiously waiting for my baby to come, but i have been told that as this is my first baby i should expect that the baby maybe late. I do not know whether to believe this....any ideas? I am still very active and do a considerable amount of walking but am also considering castor oil is this safe?

I am 38 weeks pregnant and I am trying really hard for labor to start on its own. With my first daughter I used castor oil to induce my labor and 6 hours later I was in the hospital getting ready to deliver her! My second daughter I tried it again and it did nothing but make me really sick. Maybe it was just my time to go when I had my first, not sure. But if you really cant wait, then try it. Beware you may be sick for a few hours from the castor oil though!

Candice and Saba, walking is one of the best ways to induce labor since it's relatively safe, easy, and doesn't involve any drugs or medications. But it doesn't work in every case.

Keep in mind that due dates are usually just estimates, they can often be off by a few days. Afterall, your baby doesn't know it's due and there's no way to get him or her to cooperate with your schedule.

In most cases, you will need to wait it out unless your doctor sees a reason to medically induce.

I went for my checkup yesterday and asked my gynie about castor oil, he was highly against it and gave me the reason for his reaction, Castor oil gives you gastro which brings on labour pains but it also give your baby gastro and on delivery your baby can digest some of these gastrick fluids, you can think for yourself that it can not be healthy for the child to take in. so yes I agree i dont think castor oil is the answer.

Amanda, you should ask your doctor about using this method of induction and what he/she recommends as a dosage. I'm not a medical professional and am not comfortable making that recommendation, though I will tell you that many women who try castor oil do not get the results they hoped for.

I do not recommend taking castor oil. I took it at 7:30pm. At 10:30pm I started having terrible pains and was in the bathroom going for over half an hour. When I realized the pains were contractions, not bowel pains, I called the midwife and headed to the hospital. I had the urge to push on the way. I arrived at the hospital at 11:40 and my son was born at 11:43. Because the delivery was so fast, my son was unable to push fluid out of his lungs and had to go to the NICU and I lost a lot of blood and needed a blood transfusion. My midwife didn't even arrive until after the placenta, which had a blood clot the size of the placenta attached to it. I know what it feels like at the end, being desperate and impatient...I'm there again myself but castor oil is not worth it.

I was recommended to take castor oil along with evening primrose oil towards the end of my first pregnancy. I guess I was lucky because I had no bowel problems...no sickness. Hated the taste but after relaxing, sleeping for a couple of hours, I woke up to find that labor had started. It was mild at first and then very intense but nothing unbearable. In less than 5 hours, though, my son (10lb 10oz) was born, perfectly healthy no problems.
