Catherine,
although prometrium can be used to help prevent a miscarriage, it's not recommend for use while you are breastfeeding as it does pass through the breast milk to your baby. Although I know you want to start trying now, you should probably wait a few months until you are finished breastfeeding, then talk to your doctor about going back on the prometrium while you are trying to conceive.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI have had three miscarriages. I had two in a row then I found another Dr. he put me on prometrium and then I had my miracle baby. I recently had another miscarriage but was given no drug. I missed my period, my husband and I want one more child.I am breastfeeding my one year old. If I was pregnant should i take prometrium? Am i ever going to have a normal pregnancy again? I can't bear another loss!
-- Contributed by: catherineHi Rose, you will need to talk to your doctor or pharmacist for exact guidance on how to insert the suppositories, but typically you would insert the tablet as far in as you can reach comfortably.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI just pickup my prometrium caps, 200mg, it say to take them one at night vaginally, but no one said how , meaning how far up the vigina or what? can you explan how to insert them.?I am about 5 week pg and had 3 m/c
-- Contributed by: roseI am taking Prometrium every night due to low progesterone and very slow rising hCG. On initial blood pregnancy test my level was 63...48 hours later it was 222...and 48 hours later it was 466. I am calculated at about 5 weeksm 6 days. I had an ectopic pregnancy in the past, and they are watching this pregnancy closely until we can make sure the baby is in the uterus, not one of my tubes. Don't feel overtly pregnant yet, a little tired, only slightly sick, and minimally tender breasts. With my other three children I was sicker than a dog almost the whole way. We go in for another quantitative hCG tomorow....doc is hoping it's upward of 1,000. Cross your fingers, folks!

some light spotting is pretty common in early pregnancy. Since your nurse knows about it and doesn't seem concerned, you shouldn't have anyting to worry about it, but if the bleeding continues bring it up again at your next visit.
Nausea is a common side effect of taking the progesterone supplements, but in your case it sounds like the opposite is happening. You're one of the lucky ones!
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI am about 6 weeks pregnant and was precribed he vaginal suppositories bc I have low progesterone. Saw baby heartbeat this week and HCG levels are good (over 30,000). Yet, I am having brown spotting when I wipe. Nurse said this is 'old blood' since it is brown and not bright red and not to worry unless turns red and get crampy. Anyone else have this experience? Also I have been getting morning sickness. When I take the progesterone it seems to take that naseous feeling away. Anyone?
-- Contributed by: SusanErica,
I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I had an early miscarriage myself several years ago and know how devastating it can be. Best of luck in trying to grow your family.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonHolly, Thank you for your responce. I lost the baby this week. The dr did know of my bleeding and my concern. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
-- Contributed by: ERICAErica, some Pregnancy Bleeding can occur at the beginning of your pregnancy. Does the doctor know about the bleeding and how concerned you are? If he is aware but isn't concerned himself, you might be having normal bleeding. But, if it continues and you are still worried about it, ask your doctor if he can rule out any problems that could be causing this.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI AM 7 WEEKS PREG. DR PUT ME ON PROMETRIUM 200MG 2X A DAY. STARTED 5 DAYS AGO. I HAVE BEEN LIGHTLY BLEEDING AND EXPERIENCING LOWER BACK PAIN. 2 ULTRASOUNDS CONFIRMED THAT BABY HAD GOOD HEART RATE. SHOULD I BE CONCERNED THAT THE BLEEDING HASN'T STOPPED?
-- Contributed by: ERICAMarlee,
I suspect that the spotting has more to do with your pregnancy, or potential miscarriage, than with anything related to the Prometrium. Some spotting during pregnancy is not uncommon, especially with the bleeding you experienced last week. It's a good idea to let your doctor know about the spotting, though, so it can be monitored.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonHI, I was just wondering if light spotting is normal on promethium. I was just put on it because my progesterone level is low and I am pregnant. Everytime I go to the bathroom I notice some pink/light red blood on the toilet tissue. I am nervous since just last week I was told I miscarried (I had heavy bleeding with huge clots) only to find out through 3 more blood tests to check my levels that now they think I did not since I have steady rising HCG Levels. My doctor and nurses have been awesome but I am still freaked. I'm hoping for any advice that can be shared as to if what I am experiencing is normal. Thank you!
-- Contributed by: MarleeKeisa, Prometrium is available by prescription, so you will have to see your doctor to get it. If you have insurance, part of the cost should be covered, but like other medications you may take, you'll likely have some type of copayment.
If money is a concern, talk to your pharmacist about how much the drug costs before getting it filled.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonAlicia, since you ovulated a few days later, your period would start a few days later than expected. So instead of being 4 days late, you are probably only late as of now. Take another test or two during the next few days. If it's still negative, you're probably not pregnant.
Talk to your doctor, though, if you have concerns about taking the prometrium.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonhow would i be able to get the drug and the cost?
-- Contributed by: keisa griffinHello.. I have had a recent miscarriage (Nov 08) at 13 weeks. I have been taking Prometrium since I ovulated (on day 17). I have had 4 negative pregnancy tests, and my period is 4 days late now. I have since stopped the Prometrium in hopes of my period returning so I could ovulate again. How long does it delay a period for? Also, since I ovulated so late, could I be pregnant and it not show in a home urine test yet? Please help! I am going stir crazy.... thanx....
-- Contributed by: AliciaKatieR, taking Prometrium during Pregnancy is a relativily new recommendation. In fact, I just changed the above article to reflect that it's now considered okay to take prometrium during the first few months of pregnancy. There is some evidence to suggest that it can help prevent miscarriage, so you should discuss it more with your doctor.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI have been undergoing infertility treatments for a year now and was on a break when I began having mid cycle break through bleeding. I went to my RE who ordered an Endometrial biopsy on CD25. The results showed low progesterone so she prescribed me 200 mg prometrium to be taken orally beginning the day after I ovulate until I get my period. She said if I become pregnant, I will continue taking Prometrium for the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. How come everything I read says NOT to take Pormetrium if trying to become pregnant or are pregnant. Should I be worried? I was hoping that the prometrium could help me get pregnant. My ObGyn thinks I have a luteal phase defect. I have taken Clomid 7 cycles and have had 3 injections of Novarel and 3 IUI's and I have never been pregnant before.
-- Contributed by: KatieRHi Lisa,
although taking prometrium may help prevent a miscarriage, it won't have any effect on the way the miscarriage occurs. So a woman taking it would bleed and have the usual symptoms of a miscarriage.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonIf you are taking the supplement while pregnant, if you were to miscarry would you still bleed?
-- Contributed by: lisaLauren, call your doctor. They are better prepared to answer this question and will know more about your medical history and the details of the ultrasound so they can answer better.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI started prometrium 200mg vaginally tid 1 day ago and had bleeding after my second dose. I am wondering if this is common? I had a vaginal ultrasound much earlier the same day and am wondering if either that or the insertion of the medication may have caused me to bleed? The blood was not bright red but a bit darker in color. Any thoughts?
-- Contributed by: LaurenMichelle, Prometrium during Pregnancy is believed to help increase a woman's level of progesterone in her body. The progesterone helps keep the placenta healthy and can also decrease early contractions.
Although not all doctors believe that this will prevent a miscarriage, you should stick with your doctor's advice.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI was recently put on prometrium after i went into premature labor at 23 weeks. I have been very concerned and asked my doctor many times if this was a safe method with his reassurance i have continued doctors orders but am very curious as to how this is suppose to help me??
-- Contributed by: michelleNat, although this to be discouraged during pregnancy, more and more doctors are recommending taking the supplement during the first trimester. Read our article Prometrium during Pregnancy for more info
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI am a little worried. My fertility doctor has me taking prometrium even after we found out we are pregnant. I have been reading about this drug and all things I read say that I am not supposed to be taking it while pregnant. Has anyone else been through this before? I am almost 6 weeks pregnant and have been spotting the last couple of days.
-- Contributed by: NatAnnd29, you'll need to call your doctor for this one. The spotting might just be related to your ovulation, but I can't recommend stopping a medication, only your doctor should do that.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI'm freaking out. I have been TTC for two years, I take 200mg Prometrium daily everyday post O. I have been spotting since ovulation this time. I'm freaking out, should I stop the Prometrium? Or will that cause a m/c if it's not already taking place?
-- Contributed by: annd29Worried friend, your friend needs to discuss this with her doctor. All medications have certain side effects that pregnant women need to be concerned with, but I'm sure her doctor had a good reason for prescribing them.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonHi Sandie, I hope your ultrasound went well. Since your doctor prescribed the prometrium and has been the one testing your levels, you should talk to him/her about your dosages and any concerns you might have.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonMy friend recentaly was prescribed the medication Prometrium 200mg. But she is 6wks pregnant and has had a miscarriage in the past. t=I work in a pharmacy and know that this medication can cause some very serious problems. Should I be worried and should she even be taking this medication? Please let me know. It scares me and I am very concerned!!!!!
-- Contributed by: WORRIED FRIEND :(I am 5 weeks pregnant but had my Hcg drawn and progesterone levels drawn about 7 day's ago. 1st level hcg was 163 now it's 3516 1st level progesterone was 20 now it's 15.8 I started my prometruim 100 mg every night after my first levels were drawn but after today's news I am going to take 100mg in a.m. and 200 mg at night. Is this common? Thanks, Sandie p.s. I will have an u/s on Friday to r/o ectopic Lot's of prayers please!
-- Contributed by: SandieChristi, yes, I have heard of using the oral capsule vaginally. If you have doubts about the method, check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure that's the way they want you to use it, but taking it vaginally will help you get the same medication, just in a more direct method.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI am about 5 weeks preg. My dr gave me prometrium capsule, but I have to insert it into the vagina. Have you ever heard of this? Is this safe during pregnancy? I thought a capsule was to be swallowed not put in vaginally? What is the difference and how will it help vaginally? Thanks
-- Contributed by: ChristiRachel, this question is best addressed by your physician since he or she knows that specifics of your medical history and the medication you are taking.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI am 4 weeks and 2 days pregnant. I was prescribed the Crinone 8% and have been on it for 3 days and I just got prescribed the Prometrium and will beging that in addition this evening. My questioin is about my progesterone level. This mornings blood drawn had me at a level 16, which I know is NOT in the clear. How long will it take for the meds to work and help me keep my baby?
-- Contributed by: RachelEden, prenatal pills and iron are common and safe during pregnancies. Vicodin is a Class C drug, meaning that it's not really known whether it will have any harmful effects on an unborn baby. As long as your doctor is aware of the medication and your pregnancy, and you are comfortable taking it, you are probably safe to continue taking it for a short time.
Prometrium is usually given before women conceive, but more doctors are also recommending it during pregnancy.
If you have concerns about any of the medications you are taking during pregnancy, please discuss it with your doctor since she is most familiar with your history to know what you should be taking.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI just had surgery for an assist on my ovaries and found out i was pregnant. Surgery went well still have both ovaries n baby is fine they think i'm 5-6wks pregnant and my hormone level is at 12,000? now it was at 6. I was given prescription for crinone 8% but cant afford it so the alternative was prometrium 200mg. I am a little worried about taking it bc of my pregnancy.i'm taking prenatal pills, iron pills and vicodin for my pain. i just want to know how this will affect my baby. It will be my first and i want answers please help me-pregnant and confused.
-- Contributed by: EdenJ,
you will need to talk to your doctor about this directly. Prometrium is usually used before conception but I'm not qualified to second-guess your doctors advice. Double-check with your doc exactly what he wants you to do and what he wants you to take. If you have doubts about the treatment, check with another OB/Gyn or your primary care physician.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonMy ob/gyn has prescribed Prometrium as vaginal suppositories now that I have conceived. I am about 4 weeks. My last pregnancy ended in miscarriage, and it was my first pregnancy. I'm 38. The Dr. also prescribed baby aspirin to prevent miscarriage. I am a bit concerned with taking the Prometrium. My last pregnancy I had all of the symptoms of high progesterone levels - very slow digestion, major breast changes, etc. Not sure if I should begin this treatment?
-- Contributed by: JShan, a pregnancy test only measures the amount of HCG in your urine, which is not found in Prometrium. So the medication will not affect your results on a test.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI want to know if prometrium affect a urine pregnancy test.
-- Contributed by: ShanNirupam, I'm not familiar with Duphashton so I can't really advise. You will need to talk to your doctor about any medication questions you have.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonhello, can you use prometrium instead of Duphashton in the treatment of uterine fibroid during pregnency? thanks
-- Contributed by: NirupamHi again,
Yes I've had all kinds of test done right after the 2nd miscarriage and in the beginning of the year. So my doctor told me once I found out I was pregant he would put on me on progestrone medication immediately, even if my levels were high. Thanks for your fast repsonse.
-- Contributed by: giaGia, has your doctor taken any blood tests that show your progesterone is low? Continue taking the prog. but ask your doctor why he wants you to take it. You could have low levels but still have a regular period.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonHi,
I just found out that I am pregant and my gyn also prescribed Prometrium 200 mg and to continue with baby asprin (I've been on baby asprin since January of this year, my last miscarriage was in the end of Novemeber of 2007 and my first was in January of 2007). I have a history of 2 miscarriages. My problem is that my progesterone is low, however, I have read the woman who's progesterone is low are women who don't get the periods on time, but I always on time. Can you also be low in progesterone even though your period is always on schedule?
-- Contributed by: giaLaurie,
I'd love to be able to help you more but can't offer specific dose recommendations. You'll need to discuss this with your doctor to make sure you are getting the correct amount.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonThis article talks about using prometrium before pregnancy. Like Josie, I have heard taking it at conception and especially important during the first 2 weeks of pregnancy to ensure that the uterine lining is thick enough (developed by the progesterone) to support the implantation. This was explained to me by my gyn in 2004 after a miscarriage. I am currently trying to get pregnant and lining was thick at 7.3, then thin at 5.3 and then stayed thin in some areas and thick to 10.3 in others. What is the recommendation? I am a near 42 year old woman trying for a healthy pregnancy.
-- Contributed by: LaurieJosie, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Further research shows that most doctors do, in fact, prescribe the drug after a woman's pregnancy test comes back positive (if she has a history of miscarriages). However, others think it's best to prescribe it just before ovulation so that if conception occurs, the body will hold on to it. En.AllExperts has more information regarding taking Prometrium prior to conception.
-- Contributed by: CrystalSchwankeI went throuh IVF and estimate to be about 4 weeks pregnant. I am taking 1ml injection of Progestrone oil every night to prevent miscarriage (although this is my first pregnancy with no history of miscarriage). I am concerned with taking it through the first trimester due to the warning of "possible" effects to my baby. Is is ok to stop taking it once pregnant or should I keep going?
-- Contributed by: BeatriceI've read and heard everything there is about the use of progesterone to prevent miscarriages, and this is the first time I have ever read that it is taken the first half of your cycle prior to conception. Everybody (medical and patients) says they are taking it from conception until 12-16 weeks of pregnancy.
