Maxine,

most of the tests that doctors use, aside from a Blood-based Pregnancy Test, are basically the same thing that you would use at home. So it is possible to have a false negative, especially if the test was taken too early. Wait a few more days and test again.

hi is it possible to have a false negative test taken at your docters office? if so would that mean i would and could be pregnent cause im experincing symtoms of pregnancy and i think i could but my docter told me i wasnt do you think i could have takent he test a lil to early to tell?

Sue,

since you don't know when you ovulate, you should wait a few more days and test again. In general, though, you will need to visit your physician to find out how you can better determine when you are ovulating. You may need to consider taking something like Clomid to help you ovulate.

Hi, I am 37 and My husband and I are trying to have a second baby. I recently did a hpt and it came back negative, but I am experiencing alot of nausea pretty much all day, every day. I have had alot of problems with hormone imbalances for years now and was told that I was definately going through post menapause but the doctor hadn't checked my file to see that at the time I had recently had a baby. I haven't had regular periods since I had my son in 2006. So it is extremely hard for me to calculate when I am ovulating. I was wondering if I should test again because I haven't felt this nausea or tired since I was last pregnant. Also do you recommend the product maybe baby ovulation salivia test?

I also missed a period several times and eventually my doctors found out that I had a pitutitary tumor, which was making my body believe it was pregnant when in fact I was not. I went to have blood work done and when it came back positive I have an MRI done and they found a small tumor, this is usually not cancerious and can be treated with medication.

Rebecca,

do you have any pain or any symptoms other than the late period? Some women, myself included, can skip their periods for several months. This can be a sign of polycystic ovary syndrome or a hormonal imbalance. Usually, there isn't a lot to be done other wait for your period.

Talk to your doctors about what else could be causing your late period and make sure they understand that you are concerned.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Ok...some advice here...I am 2 months late...7 negative home tests and 1 negative blood test at the hospital. I am getting very concerned and none of the doctors I have seen seem to care, they just tell me to wait and see.

Confused88,

you should call your OB/Gyn. Although it's rare to get pregnant on the Mirena, it can occasionally happen. But I'm just as concerned about the missing string. Even if you are not pregnant, you should be checked by your OB/Gyn.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have had a mirena (IUD) for a year now and lately I have had some pregnancy symptoms: sore breast, gas, back pain. I can't feel my string on my Mirena either. I have taking 5 pregnancy tests and they have all been negative. I don't have a period so I can go by that. I have heard that the Mirena can cause false negatives. Does anyone have any advice?? Please Help!!

-- Contributed by: Confused88

Priscilla,

a pregnant woman produces hCG, the pregnancy hormone, no matter what other medication she takes. That hormone is what shows positive on a pregnany test. Although false negatives can happen, the chances are pretty slim of having multiple false results, especially at the doctor's office.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi again do you think that its possible that something could have just caused the pregnancy test to be negative? after i had intercourse in Jan. i took the morning after pill and ive never took birth control do you think the hormones in the pill caused a false negative? the reason im asking is because i seem to be pretty big for a couple of months! but i guess i will find out for sure on Tues. i scheduled an appt. with my doc.

-- Contributed by: priscilla

Priscilla,

you probably weren't pregnant all along, you likely conceived sometime more recently. Even when a woman has an irregular cycle or misses periods, she'll still, in most cases, ovulate at some point to start the next cycle. You'll need to follow up with your doctor to find out how far along you are and when you conceived. Since you went to the doctor after missing your period for three months and it's now five months, you are probably only two months along at the latest.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi, I have not had a period since Dec. 2008, I've tried several pregnancy tests all negative and ive always had a normal cycle (never missing a period). I even went to the doctor (after 3 months of missed periods) and he said i was not preganant. Well its been about 5 months and my stomach seems a little hard and i see a noticeable bump so i decided to take a pregnancy test again and now its positive, I double checked and both tests are positive. Idont understand what could be the cause? Can you maybe explain? Does that mean I've been pregnant all along.

-- Contributed by: priscilla

MelRose, if you conceived back in February or even early March depending on when you would have ovulated, you should definitely be able to get a positive test result now. You should take another test to make sure you have an accurate test. If the symptoms continue, contact your doctor to make sure there isn't some other health issue that needs to be addressed.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

The last time I had had intercourse was back in Feb. then a month or so ago I started experiencing signs of being pregnant. I talked to a few friends about it and they all think that I maybe but I took a pregnacy test and it said negative. But I was on birth control at one point but got so messed up I had to stop taking it. I keep wondering if that could of messed things up. I am not sure what to do at this point. But on the other hand I know my body better than a pregnacy test.

-- Contributed by: MelRose

Lia, it's unusual to get a false positive, but it can happen. It might also be a sign that you were pregnant but had a very early miscarriage.

Wait a few days and test again. If it's still negative and you don't have a period yet, see your doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hello, I've been concerned lately that I'm showing some signs of pregnancy- bloating, tender breasts, white discharge- so I went and took a CVS pregnancy test, which came out positive, which scared the pants off me. That was 2 days ago. Since then, I've taken 2 more tests of the same brand (1 during the day and 1 with FMU) and both were negative. I just am curious as to how likely it seems that the first one might have been right.

-- Contributed by: Lia

Laura,

since your period is due now, this is the time to take a pregnancy test. The test you took a few days ago was too early to give you an accurate result. So you might be pregnant. The blurred vision, however, might be a sign of other health concerns and should be discussed with your doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I think i am 4weeks pregnant getting tight pains, blurred vission dizzness heaving i was due on today and i havnt yet come on took a test 3days ago come back negetive still think iam?

-- Contributed by: Laura

Monica, I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage. The pregnancy test detects the hormone HcG, which is only present during a pregnancy. In your case, you clearly had a pregnancy, but it went undetected anyway.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Last year I took two pregnancy test 3wks apart after I had miss my period for a month and a half. Both test came out negative two weeks afer the last test I had a miscarrige. According to the Dr. I was appr. 10 weeks pregnant before I lost the baby

-- Contributed by: monica

Alissa, the Prozac wouldn't have any effect on your period. Since you took the pregnancy test when you were already late, you should wait a few more days and test again. If you ovulated later this month, you might not have been pregnant long enough to get a positive test result.

If the next test is still negative, you are probably not pregnant.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I was due to have my period 4 days ago, and am VERY rarely late. I have intense nausea between eleven pm and 1:30am for the past couple nights, and have been gassy and exhausted. I took a pregnancy test today and it was negative. I have been pregnant twice before and had these same symptoms both times. My dr put me on Prozac a few days ago and am not sure if that would have anything to do with a late period, or a false negative. Anyone have an idea? I dont FEEL like I'm going to get my period anytime soon.

-- Contributed by: Alissa0819

Verymuch,

based on that due date, I come up with April 25 as the likely time of conception, give or take a few days.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My due date is 1-16-09, based upon my initial ultra sound and my completely guessed first day of last cycle 4-11-08.

-- Contributed by: VERYMUCHCONFUSED

Verymuchconfused,

since your cycle is irregular, it's difficult to pinpoint when you ovulated and conceived. If you ovulated later and tested too early, it would show up negative. When is your due date?

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I dont quite remeber when my last cycle was because it is irregular. I guessed it to be 04-11-08, now I am not so sure. Anyway I didn't get my cycle I noticed 2nd and 3rd week of May. I took a pregnancy test 5-25-08. I have a steady boyfriend and we have sex alot. THere were 2 EPT tests in a box, on the first one taken 5-25-08 it was NEGATIVE. Still no period, I took another 2 days after and it was negative. I finally went to a physician June 11th and they did a urine test as well but it showed I was pregnant. I went to the doctor 6-16-08 and an ultra sound and my estimated last first day cycle made me around 6 weeks pregnant. How can you explain this?

-- Contributed by: VERYMUCHCONFUSED

Scared, it means that the test was invalid for some reason. You will need to take another test or contact your physician for a Blood-based Pregnancy Test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I just took a clear blue pregnancy test and in the corner it has an arrow pointing to an open book. What does that mean???

-- Contributed by: Scared

Britt, since you haven't had a period in three months, you would know by now if you were pregnant. When did you last take a pregnancy test? If it was within the past two months and it was negative, you are probably not pregnant. Give your doctor a call to discuss if you should have a checkup.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have not had a period since July 27th. i have taken 3 test and all have said neg.!! what do i do? am i pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Britt

Tiffany, pregnancy affects many women differently, so it's hard to say if that's what is going on with you. If you think you might be pregnant despite the negative pregnancy test, you should call your doctor and request a Blood-based Pregnancy Test. Even if you have some bleeding throughout pregnancy, you should still be able to get a positive result on a pregnancy test. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for over 3 months now and have not had any luck. this last cycle I decided not to stress about it so much and just let nature take it's course. Well my preiod came a couple days late and it ahs been extremely abmormal. My last period was a little abnormal too. I feel really weird lately and have headaches and cramping that come and go. I have taken HPT and they have all come back negative. I have recently noticed big blue viens on my boobs that aren't normally there. My mom had periods throughout her pregnancies. Could this be whats happening to me?

-- Contributed by: Tiffany

Krissie, are you only able to see one line and not the other or are partial lines visible? I'm not sure which home pregnancy test you are using, but if you can't easily tell by looking at the test what the results are, you will need to test again.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Nicole, how late is your period? If it's more than a few days late, you should have gotten a positive result on your test if you are pregnant. If your period isn't late yet, you'll need to wait a lit longer to get accurate test results.

If you're not pregnant, you should contact your doctor about the symptoms that you are having.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Anna, with your period being three weeks late, you would be able to get a positive result on a test by now. The symptoms you mention are some of the early signs of pregnancy, but they could be attributed to other things as well. It may be possible that you ovulated later in the month. If that's the case, you might be pregnant, but you likely would already know about it with a home test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i took the test and it appear....one line is clear and the other is not clear..what does it mean?

-- Contributed by: krissie

I HAVE TAKEN 3 HP TESTS AND GOT NEGATIVE, BUT I AM STILL HAVING SYMPTOMS OF NAUSEA, FATIGUE, HEADACHES, BACKACHES, BLOATING, AND I HAVE TO PEE ALL THE TIME NOW. PLUS TODAY AT WORK I WAS TALKING TO SOME PAITENTS AND I GOT LIGHTHEADED AND FELT LIKE I WAS GONNA FAINT. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE. COULD I BE PREGNANT AND THE TESTS JUST ARENT SHOWING IT?

-- Contributed by: NICOLE

Im three weeks late and took 3 pregnancy test 3 days in a row and all negative but my period is always on time also have back aches like i do during my mentrual cycle and have had them for a couple weeks,am nausous and had discharge a week ago.Do you think i could still be pregnant?

-- Contributed by: anna

Sara, if a woman is far enough along in a pregnancy to make her period late, she shold be able to get a positive on a pregnancy test. It's possible, though, if your cycle is irregular that you could be pregnant but not testing positive yet. Wait a few more days and try testing again.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i am 4 days late but i have taken 2 tests that say negative. how common is it to get a negative when actually pregnant if you have already missed your period? wouldnt it have detected it?

-- Contributed by: sara

M,

you should take another test if you doubt the results of the first one. You may have tested too early or there wasn't enough HCG in your system to give a positive during the first one.

If the next test is also negative, you are likely not pregnant. If your other symptoms continue, you might want to have a checl-up with your OB/GYN.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took an hpt and it was negative. I do have PCOS, so that may have affected the result of the hpt. However, I have cramps, bloating, lower back ache, increased appetite, and extremely sore breasts, and my energy level is dropping. It could be my period I suppose, but I didn't have a period in May, and so far, nothing in June either. The approximate date of conception was May 3rd.

-- Contributed by: M

Angie, you don't mention how long your husband was home, but your likely ovulation date would have been around May 11. The phentermine wouldn't cause a false negative, only medications that contain hormones can do that. It's possible the symptoms you notice are side effects of the phentermine or a virus. You should contact your doctor for a check up.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have had two babies already, and I know what it feels like to be pregnant. My husband is in the army and he came home on leave for two weeks. my last normal period was 4/27, and he came home around 5/1. We used male condoms, but I was supposed to get my period 5/25. I didnt think anything about it until I started feeling queezy everynight. I also keep getting dizzy, and my face gets really hot. I took a pregnancy test but it was negative. I am on phentermine, and I was wondering if it could give me a false negative. My mood and appetite has also changed, but it can easily be confused with the same syptoms you have before you start your period. I just havent started mine, so if you could pls tell me a little about this I would be grateful. thankyou angie

Samantha,

you're not alone, these are pretty common questions. Check out our Pregnancy FAQs section: My home pregnancy test says I'm not pregnant but my period is late and I have some of the symptoms of pregnancy. Could the test be wrong? and I've been tired and my breasts are sore. Could I be pregnant? for more information. That should answer your question, but if not, let us know.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have taken 2 home test and they are both negative, but i do not have regular periods and i seem to have a number of symptoms, from nausea, sleeping 10-15 hours a day which is completely out of the ordinary and then sore breats....im so confused

-- Contributed by: Samantha

Monika, you should call your doctor right away. Since you've had a miscarriage already, they will want to monitor it more closely, and they can test you further to confirm if you are pregnant.

I'VE GOTTEN PREGNANT BEFORE & 3 DIFFERENT HOME PREGNANCY TEST GAVE NEGATIVE RESULTS. I WENT TO A DOCTOR AND INSTEAD OF AN ULTRASOUND OR BLOOD TEST HE PRESSED DOWN ON MY STOMACH IN 3 OR 4 LOCATIONS AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT I WAS PREGNANT. HOWEVER I DIDNT BRING THAT BABY TO TERM BECAUSE OF SOME REASON STATING THAT THE POLE WAS NOT CONNECTED TO THE SAC. I DONT KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS BUT I MATCH UP WITH ABOUT 90% OF PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS INCLUDING THE DARK BLACK LINE FROM MY BELLY BUTTON TO UTEROUS.BUT, IM STILL GETTING THE NEGATIVE RESULTS ON PREGNANCY TEST AND STILL HAVE MY PERIOD. MY MOM STATED THAT SHE HAD HER PERIOD FOR ABOUT 5 MONTHS AS SHE CARRIED ME. I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO IN THIS SITUATION .

Danielle, did the hospital tell you you are pregnant? Pretty much anytime there is a positive test result on a pregnancy test it means the person taking the test is pregnant. Pregnancy Test False Positives are pretty rare, but they can occur if someone is taking certain medications.

Natalie, you’re not alone, this is a pretty common question. Check out our Pregnancy FAQs section: My home pregnancy test says I’m not pregnant. Could the test be wrong? for more information. That should answer your question, but if not, let us know.

Kristian, Blood-based Pregnancy Test can provide more answers about how far along a pregnancy is and how it's progressing, so hopefully your doctor will have some helpful answers for you soon.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have taken 5 home pregnancy tests, and all five have positive results. I went to the doctor to make sure that I was indeed pregnant, and the hospital urine test came back negative. They ensured me that this could be a result of a false negative, considering the cir...stances,so they decided to do a blood test. I am awaiting the results anxiously.

-- Contributed by: Kristian

Stacey, most pregnancy tests do caution that they should not be read after 10 minutes because of the likelihood of a false negative, which is probably what happened in this case. But you're right, it's a good idea for you to take another test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

When I took a test, at first it read negative. But when i looked at it awhile later, there was a very skinny vertical blue line. I think this may be from the test sitting to long and I'm going to retest on Jan 31st which will be a week after my missed period.

-- Contributed by: STacey

Loy,

some medications can cause false positives but the pill isn't one of them. False positives are rarer than false negatives, but they can happen is the test isn't read soon enough or if the test is old. If you doubt the results, try taking another test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Can pregnancy tests read false positive if you have recently been on birth control?

-- Contributed by: Loy

Kimberleigh,

there are plenty of things that could affect your cycle, including your recent surgery. If you are pregnant, you should been able to get a positive result on your pregnancy test by now, but if you think you could be pregnant it wouldn't hurt to take another test to be sure.

If you still get a negative result and your don't get your period, you should give your doctor a call.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Trisha,

which pregnancy test did you take? Different tests have different ways of displaying the results...a double line like you mention may indicate that you are pregnant. If you suspect that the results are an error, you may have a test that just didn't work right. Try taking a different test and make sure you compare the results to the images on the instruction sheet to ensure a proper reading.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I am 1 week late had a negative test today I had an ovary and tube removed in july but my periods have been normal up until now should i test again or could this be an effect of the surgery?

-- Contributed by: kimberleigh

HEY I TOOK THE TEST N I GOT 2 LINES NOT IN 1 BUT SEPARTE LINES WAT DUS IT MEAN?

-- Contributed by: TRISHA

Tiff,

I don't want to give you false hope since all the pregnancy tests are negative, but if your period was irregular this month, you could have ovulated later. Maybe you are pregnant but just aren't far enough along yet for a positive result.

Let's say you were supposed to ovulate around December 1. If you conceived then, you should be able to get a positive test result around December 15. But if a woman misses her usual ovulation date and ovulates instead around December 10, she wouldn't test positive (if she conceived) until approximately December 24. Make sense?

So, there's a chance since it sounds like you have a pretty irregular cycle. Good luck.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hey! I have had 3 children and we were trying for just one more. Since we began I have had 2 with a possible 3rd miscarriage. The third would have been so soon that the doctor just thought it was probably a late period so there was never a check up on it. Anyways, I had some blood work done and it was positive for something but it required a second test to be ran just in case the first was a false positive for some reason and it ended up coming back all clear. So we were able to try and conceive again and have since tried. I have had another cycle since then and it was right on time but this month I have not had one. I am 11 days late and have had 3 home pregnancy test that have shown up (-) and I have even gone to the lab and done a blood preg. test and it was also (-). I am so confused and saddened at the same time but I feel that I still may possibly be pregnant even with all the negatives. I have been so tired lately and my appetite seems to have increased but I have been so let down with the past 2 or 3 miscarriages that I don't consider that as even possible symptoms of pregnancy. Do you really think that it is possible that I could still be pregnant and just not showing up yet? With my last child I got pregnant 3 days before I was supposed to start my period. I know this to be true for sure. So saying that, is it possible that I may have gotten pregnant really close to my start date and it is still just not showing up even in a blood test? Concerned and very anxious!!!

-- Contributed by: Tiff

Lizza,

your period is probably just late. If you conceived in the middle of your cycle and were missing your period due to pregnancy, it would have shown up on a pregnancy test by now. But it's possible that if you ovulated later, you could have conceived later but are not far enough along yet to get a positive test result.

Try waiting a few more days and taking another test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I was about 9 days late when I took a pregnancy test, it was negative. This is day 10 and still I haven't started my period. Advice??

-- Contributed by: Lizza

Chelise, sounds like you got a wacky test. You should try taking another pregnancy test, preferably one from a different box if you bought a set or try a different brand. Good luck.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I just took at test and it has a + sign and then in the other window it has a (l). It has 2 instead of just one. So does this mean that I am pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Chelise

Jameson,

pretty much anytime there is a positive test result on a pregnancy test it means the person taking the test is pregnant. Pregnancy Test False Positives are pretty rare, but they can occur if someone is taking certain medications. At this point, your girlfriend should contact her doctor for a Blood-based Pregnancy Test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My girlfriend was taking the birth control pill for a while now, and she stopped taking it after we had sex its been 2 months now and she said shes pregnant. she has taken many test some positive some negative. we are not sure what to do

-- Contributed by: jameson

Hi Heather,

the home pregnancy test you took may have had a false positive, which is unusual but can happen. The blood-based test your doctor used is generally more accurate and is the one that I'd believe.

If your period is late or you have some of the early signs of pregnancy, you should take another test to compare the results.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

hi. i did a pregnancy test and it came back positive but i did another down the doctors the same day and it was negative. i dont know what to think or feel

-- Contributed by: heather

Nicole, if you haven't done so, you should call your doctor. They might want to examine you to see why you aren't getting a period.

If you are doubting the results of the home pregnancy test, try taking one from a different brand. Do you have any Signs of Pregnancy?

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took a test and it came out negative 3 times same brand test. I haven't gotten my period in like three months do you know what it could be?

-- Contributed by: Nicole

Hi Miranda,

it could be a number of things. Is your period late? You may be simply retaining water or the swelling could be related to ovulation. Some women can feel when their ovaries enlarge and release an egg.

If your period is late and you are testing negative, maybe there is something else going on. If the area is unusually large and painful, you should call your doctor and have it checked out.

You usually wouldn't notice a swelling belly that is pregnancy related until you are far enough along in a pregnancy for a positive home pregnancy test. Any early signs of pregnancy that you might notice don't usually occur until there is enough HCG to make a test turn positive.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

my belly is growing near my uteris but test are negative

-- Contributed by: miranda

Hi Sonia,

if you had a line in the positive window of a home pregnancy test, no matter how light it was, you are pregnant. You should contact your OB/GYN for an appointment or take another test if you doubt the results.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi Katrina,

that's a tough predicament because you don't really know when your period is due, so you don't know when you are ovulating, do you?

The spotting you described could be implantation bleeding, the beginning of an early period, or just some mid-cycle spotting. There's no way to know yet.

You can keep taking home pregnancy tests, but I'd try to wait at least another 4-5 days before taking another. If you just conceived around the 16th, you wouldn't be able to test positive until probably the 30th anyway.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Forthe past three months my period has been coming normally always on the 18th or 19th now its is october 27th and i have not gotten it yet. I took a pregnancy test but it had a very faint line. Should i be worried. Two weeks ago i had shrap pains in my lower abdoman which would last a second or two.

-- Contributed by: sonia

My last period was August 14. I have irregular menstration anywhere from 21 days to 63 days. We are trying actively to concieve. On October 16th I had very light spotting. I have done pregnancy tests and they are negative. I don't know what to do or think now. I love the wait and see attitude, but there are so many things I don't want to do if I am pregnant (heavy lifting and so on) Any answers for me. Thanks for your help.

-- Contributed by: Katrina

Nomvuyiseko, after stopping birth control, it can take a few months before your cycle returns to normal. Since your test was negative and you haven't had a normal cycle since July, I don't think you are pregnant.

Your doctor can advise you better on how long it can take for your body to become more regular based on the type of birth control you were using. It might take a few months before your period returns and you can try to conceive, if that's what you want to do.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Louise, it's hard when you think you might be pregnant but the tests aren't backing you up. Since you are only 8 days late, it might be possible that you ovulated late and conceived late. That could mean that you aren't far enough along yet to get a positive home pregnancy test.

Unfortunately, stress can also cause your period to be late and if you are really focused on getting pregnant, it may have thrown your cycle off. I don't think any doctors will be concerned about your late period unless it gets to be a month or so late.

Although it's hard, try to wait another few days or even a week before taking another test.

I have irregullar periods i was using a two month injectable contraceptive. i stop using it on o6 July 2007 and since then im not in my periods. i had all the early symptomps of pregnancy but i tested negative so is this means that i am pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Nomvuyiseko

I am eight days late for my period. My husband and I want to get pregnant and thought we might be. I have taken numerous tests from different companies all negative. I have had a regular period for 20+ years, my breasts are tender, especially around in the nipples, a little nausea usually during the first half of the day, though today it seems to be later, slight cramping that comes and goes, nothing uncomfortable, a little aching in the lower back. Am trying to get in touch with doctors, but very hard unless you're already pregnant. In PA it's very tough to find OB/Gyns. The midwife I talked to said I'm probably not pregnant, but she couldn't tell me why I'm late and having such symptoms, she went on about tracking ovulation (don't you need to have a period to start that?) Told me to make an appt. How ironic. Anyway, how much longer should I wait before I start being more aggressive, maybe go to a lab and get the blood test done myself? I just need some guidance and am very confused.

-- Contributed by: Louise

Hi Michelle, it is possible to have false negatives with home pregnancy tests, especially if you are using an older brand or have another medical condition that could affect the test. You should call your doctor and have them check you out. Your missing period could be a result of something else or maybe you need to try a different pill.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My Doctor switched me from depo-vera shot to the pill. I have had 1 very light period after taking the pill and then no periods at all for 5 months. I do not feel pregnant nor had symptoms. However, recently I had felt like there is something "alive" in my stomach. I am overweight so I have not noticed much weight gain or the "pooch". I have taken 2 home pregnancy tests and they have been negative. Is it possible to be pregnant and it still show negative? I am still currently on the pill.

Hi Julie, if it's really stressing you out, call your doctor. But it's my experience that they don't get concerned until you are a few months late.

Maybe you're pregnant but it's too early to tell on a test. If that's the case, I don't think you would be having any symptoms though. The weight and breast changes could all be part of hormone changes related to your late period.

I'd wait a week and test again.

I am 3 and a half weeks late. I'm on the pill so I am normally like clockwork. I have taken several tests and they keep coming up negative. I even tried different brands and A.M. urine. I have been pregnant before and I wasn't able to get a positive test result until I already had morning sickness. So far I am just very tired, my boobs are tender and my appetite is very fluctuating. My weight has also been up and down for the last week within a 4 lb. difference. Does this sound normal? Should I be contacting my doctor or wait it out?

If you are taking tests from the batch or always using the same brand, there could be a problem with the tests and it's possible you are pregnant. Or, maybe you aren't far enough along yet to register on the tests.

Wait another week and try using a different brand. If it's still negative and there is still no period, give your doctor a call. Good luck

Tanya, I feel your pain. I've been where you are and I'll tell what the doctor told me when I called her about it: it's probably stress related. The bloating and moodiness is all related to your hormones being out of whack.

It's always possible, though unlikely, that you are pregnant, but if you're doubting the tests, give your doc a call and ask for a blood test. And try using a different brand pregnancy test than what you have been using just in case the ones you already have are duds. Good luck!

Missed 2 periods in a row...I feel like a blimp...I'm peeing every 5 minutes, I'm moody as all hell...I think I might be pregnant but all my tests keep coming up negative...I had a friend who tested negative through out her entire pregnancy. Could this be happening to me too?
