Michelle, it's not uncommon for babies to have different activity levels, even though they are twins. You may just be getting a sneak preview into their personalities. As long as your doctor isn't concerned, it sounds like everything is fine to me.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI am 12 weeks pregnant with twins and I had my ultrasound a week ago. One of the twins did not stop wriggling about very active indeed!! While the other twin seemed to be relaxed and did not move alot. The heartbeat and size was spot on for both, should I be concerned because one is much more active than the other? They are fraternal twins.

I've read that twins usually develop at the same rate as singles during the first part of pregnancy, so I would expect the size to be the same as what you'd expect if you only had one. But, there is a lot that can go into those measurements. First, make sure that you and your doctor are using the same method of counting. You are counting from your last period, but the doctor might be counting from the likely Conception Date. Also, if you are off by a few days with your period and you ovulated later, that could easily put you at least a week off.
Further ultrasounds will paint a better picture, but talk to your doctor about whether or not he's concerned.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI am pretty sure of the date of my LMP within a couple of days. I had my first ultrasound at what I thought was 8 weeks 2 days but the twins measured 6 weeks 5 days. The doctor said that both heartbeats looked good for this gestational age. Should I be nervous? I have had 2 miscarriages between my 2nd and 3rd babies. These will be babies 4 and 5. I feel heaviness in my vaginal, lower abd area, no spotting or cramping. I am nauseated and extremely tired. Thanks

-- Contributed by: HollySwansonhi i've been spotting for a tew days my gp referred me for a u/s which showed two sacs but no heart beats.the u/s showed up that i was 6 wks pregnant however according to my dates i should be around 10/12 wks.i have to go back for another u/s in two weeks however i feel very confussed.
-- Contributed by: kimEsther, even if you were having twins, you wouldn't feel any movement from them this early. Twins don't develop faster than single pregnancies, so the fetus don't move sooner, which is usually not detected until much later. Instead, you might be feeling the stretching and expanding of your uterus and the muscles around it.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansoni am 25 with 4 weeks pregnancy and i have started feeling movement in my stomach. could it be twins
-- Contributed by: EstherVanessa, the fluttering you mention usually doesn't happen until later in the pregnancy, regardless of having twins. An ultrasound should be able to tell you if you are having twins.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonThis is my second pregnancy so I can tell the difference between fluttering vs. gas. Anyway, I felt fluttering as early as 8 weeks and I'm 10 weeks now and it's increasingly stronger. Also, I've went from a size 7 to a 9 in about 7 weeks or so... I have no history of twins in my family but could it be twins?
-- Contributed by: VanessaI am happy in the middle of my pregnancy with twins "boys" I hope
-- Contributed by: marwaMichala, it's really hard to say. Every pregnancy has much different symptoms and bellies grow at different rates. If you are Pregnant with Twins, you should be able to find out soon on an ultrasound. If you don't have one scheduled, tell your doctor about your concerns and find out when you can get one.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI have been told that my baby is due 21 Dec but the thing is I look about 5 months gone and I am feeling movement could this mean I might be having twins
-- Contributed by: MichalaStella, since your period is late, you can take a pregnancy test and get accurate results. The symptoms you mention are some of the early signs of pregnancy, but they could also be a sign of PMS or the flu or a combination of several things.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI've missed my period for 8 days now, I do not know whether I am pregnant or not. I only feel pains in my breast especially the left one and some abdominal cramps. my period has not stopped like this before. About 5 days to the time of my menstruation, I saw some brownish coffee colored discharge from my vagina for about 48 hours and it stopped. I normally have this discharge continuously till I menstruate but this time it stopped and my period has not come. Could it be pregnancy?
-- Contributed by: Stella AckonJessica,
did the person doing your ultrasound notice the second heartbeat? By 35 weeks, you should have been able to see a twin on an ultrasound. It's unlikely that you would have twins and not be aware of it by now, but anything could happen. Let us know how many you have.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI am 35 weeks prgnant and I have all of the symptoms of twins. My ultrasound says I am having only one child but last week when I was hooked up to a fetal monitor I heard another heartbeat it was very faint but it was there. being a nurse I kept up with my pulse and it didn't match either heartbeat. Could one be hiding and I actually be pregnant with twins? Could their heartbeat be so close together that you couldn't tell? Everyone says I look like i am pregnant with twins, could I be?

first pregnancies can be especially hard to figure out when there is sudden weight gain. You're right, it might be twins and the ultrasound will let you know for sure.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonI just found out I was pregnant a few days ago..and i think im pregnant with twins or more..becasue ive gained 6 pounds very quickly and i always feel out of breath or tired...I hopefully will get an altrasound this week to confirm...But whats wierd i can push down by the pelvic area and feel somethin move..Its my first pregnancy so maybe its normal
-- Contributed by: JenniferHi Alicia, I am so glad we are in the same boat I have been dying to talk ot someone in the same situation. My grandma on my dads side had twins.. it is supposed to skip a generation so that would be either myself or one of my cousins. I just found out on april 8th that I was pregnant for the third time. I took the test 'cause I just knew.. my boobs were sore, I was getting up to pee in the night and I was more exhausted than normal. I don't know when my last period was (i know it was in Feb but no idea beginning middle or end.) When I did the test..same thing!! It made the positive sign before I was done peeing and before it got to the control window. the result was not dull by any means. I am trying to get an appt. with my doc so I can schedule an ultrasound to find out if there is more than one and how far along I am, roughly. I guess I should be about 6 weeks but the symptoms are ridiculous!! Have you found out yet if you are having twins?? Please let me know!!!
-- Contributed by: tashahi there, i found out i was pregnant on the 1st of march ( this month ). i have been in quite alot of discomfort and have considrabley larger & tender breasts. i have 3 children and have felt very different over the last 3 weeks due to the discomfort i saw a doctor who refered me to the hospital, i had a scan today its early days but it looks as if there are two sacks developing but i will have to wait amonth or so for it be confirmed but im alot bigger i have put on wait and i feel as if im having twins but will be more than happy with one healthy baby two will be a very special gift.
-- Contributed by: sarahI knew I was PG 1 week after conception because the symptoms were outrageous. (Feeling sick, boobs hurting, being tired, Headaches, constipation, etc) Finally a test came back positive one week before my Expected period. I've had 1 child already, and I know every pregnancy is different, but the EXHAUSTION is ridiculous! I can only be up about 8 hours a day. When I am taking care of my son, 3 hours after my first nap, I am so tired and exhausted I want to cry. Literally. And I am only 4 weeks. This is 10 times worse than the last one, and doesn't feel like it should be normal which makes me think I'm having twins. We'll see I suppose.
-- Contributed by: DaniAlicia, some women sense that they are pregnant even before they get a positive pregnancy test, so maybe the same is true for you suspecting that you are having twins. If you find yourself gaining weight quicker than with your other pregnancies, that might be a good clue.
Have you talked to your doctor about having an ultrasound? That's usually the most reliable way to tell.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonHi, I read the signs and symptoms of twins. They did run on my mothers side for quite a few generations and then skipped 2 generations and now my cousin has twins. This is my fifth pregnancy (my forth ended in a miscarriage) With all my pregnancies I had to wait until 2 days after my missed period for a faint positive line to show up to tell me I was pregnant. With this pregnancy I found out 5 days before I even missed my period that I was pregnant and the line was dark red before it even reached the control line. I took the test because i had been feeling sick and my sypmtoms are still much more pronounced than any other pregnancy. I've used the same pregnancy test for all 5 pregnancies. I am nearly 7 weeks pregnant now, but just can't kick this thought that there might be two. Maybe you can give me some insight. Thank you. Alicia
-- Contributed by: AliciaHi Michele,
you don't mention how far along you are, but I'm guessing you are in your second trimester or early in your third. It does sound like you have gained a lot of weight, but I think that's even more than you would expect if you were having twins.
Retaining water and weight gain are common factors that impact pregnancy and can cause preeclampsyia, especially if you also have high blood pressure. The weight gain might also be a sign of Gestational Diabetes. Make sure you talk to your doctor about both of these possibilties.
As for the ultrasound, twins can usually be seen easily and don't require a special scan to look for them, but if they were laying side by side it could be difficult to detect. Ask your doctor or ultrasound tech to listen carefully for two heartbeats, which is usually one of the first signs of having multiples.
-- Contributed by: HollySwansonhi im 33 years old this is my fourth pregnancy. my weight before i was pregnant was 153 now i am weighing 213lbs. my legs and feet have lots of water retention. I have been getting excessive cramping in my stomach for the past 3 months i look like i am going to give birth at any time, and i am constantly ask if i was expecting twins. I went for a 3d altersound 2 months ago and got told that i was having a girl at 110 percent, than i went for an other altersound last month and gotten told that i was having a boy and the lady couldn't believe that she could have missed that the last time. My doctor tells me that i am growing rapidly but never checked me for twin.

Actually, I think you may have misread our article. Although it is commonly believed that maternal age alone increases a woman's chance of having twins, this increase is actually due to the fact that older women are more likely to have used fertility treatments to conceive. If you have not been taking fertility drugs, you are no more likely to have twins than any other woman with the same symptoms.
However, if you are pregnant with twins, you don't need to be concerned about increased risks to the babies because of your age. Studies have shown that older women can carry twins just as successfully as their younger counterparts.

-- Contributed by: DanahindersHi, Well I was just reading your site, and I am very curious as to why it would be more common for women over 35 to have twins....I am two months away from being 45 and am now 37 days late for my period. I have a very large tummy. And all the other signs of early pregnancy. I will soon test. I have children my youngest being 21. And I have to say I'm just very surprised that older women would be more likely to have multiples. Can you answer this question for me? Thank You Lezlie
