Emmax, although physical activity can help jumpstart labor, make sure you aren't overdoing it. Altough you are already uncomfortable, it's really not a good idea to start labor until you hit the 40 weeks mark, or maybe a few days before. talk to your doctor to see if he has any suggestions, but you are probably going to have wait a bit longer.

I am 38 weeks pregnant with my second and am very uncomfortable. I have tried eating pineapple (4 in 48 hours) which hasnt worked. I have been moving furniture all day too. Having lots of braxton hicks but thats about it! Really starting to get to me now! x

I found mowing the lawns helped bring my third boy into the world. Also long up hill walks with the other two boys.Once in the labour walk till u can't as this helps the baby come out as gravity has an effect.good luck

Hannahb,

walking is one of the best ways to induce labor. Keep in mind that due dates are usually just estimates, they can often be off by a few days. Afterall, your baby doesn't know it's due and there's no way to get her to cooperate with your schedule.

I'm 38 weeks preg. And am trying everything to naturally induce labor! I'm ready. And missorable.. I used castrol oil with my son at 38 weeks And don't regret it at all! I had him 13 hours later and he was 8lbs! Now Iv tried it with this pregnancy. Along with walking. Sex. Excersise ball. Nipple stimulation. And I'm still preg! Help... I'm ready to give birth and Meet my baby girl!!!!

Aleshia, personally, I don't think it's safe to try to induce labor with any kind of herb or supplement without your doctor's approval. Have you talked to your physician about inducing? Since you are so close to your due date, your doctor might be willing to start pitocin and break your water.

Im almost 39 weeks and My contractions usually only come at night. my cervix is 50% softened and my husband is leaving to kuwait over sea's for a year and i want to induce labor with black cohosh. I already tried castor oil and that didnt work at all. This is embarrassing but i already have diarrea off and on. And I just want to know maybe if it would probably be ok to take black cohosh and walk around. I also just got married and want my husband to see his son be born by this weekend and he wants to see him to this is hard on us both and we really want to do this. I need some advice please help me im due sept. 26th and his head is already way down there and my dr. can feel his head very easily. an im not going into full explanation on how she can feel his head I hope you get what im saying. thanks

-- Contributed by: aleshia

Lisah, I don't think a woman should ever induce before her due date, especially not without the doctor's okay and assistance. Walking a lot can sometimes get things started and is, in my opinion, the safest way to induce since it doesn't involve medications or herbs. Talk to your doctor about your options.

IM 4 DAYS AWAY FROM MY DUE DATE..CAN I INDUCE LABOR??

-- Contributed by: LISAH

I took castor oil with my first pregnancy, I would never recommend any one using it, I was 6 days overdue and he still wasnt ready to come out, after drinking the castor oil I was in active labor in about 5 hours but it made my labor alot longer and more stressful for me and my son, I was in labor for 56 hours and he was born using forceps! NOT GOOD~!

-- Contributed by: Sarah

Shelby, even though a baby born with two weeks left would be considered full term, it's not a good idea to try to induce early unless your doctor feels there is a medical reason to do so. If you are uncomfortable, you can talk to your doctor about planning an induction, but it probably won't be more than a day or two before your due date.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

im 2 weeks away from my due date and ive tried everything to get this baby out. Is it dangerous to try to induce my labor before my due date?

-- Contributed by: shelby

With my daughter, I walked everyday for 3 weeks and had her at 38 weeks. Each day it felt heavier and heavier. THe last day I couldn't even walk it was so uncomfortable but that was her working her way into my pelvic

I am a reflexologist and have used reflexology foremostly to relax many expectant moms. I would suggest having a professional reflexology treatment (check credentials) and if it doesn't help have another session every other day. As long as you have no health issues it shouldn't interfere with standard medical procedures as it is a complementary therapy!

-- Contributed by: Madgey

Amber, if you are 42 weeks, you should be induced by now. Contact your doctor and make sure the two of you agree on how far along your pregnancy is. Most doctors don't want a pregnancy to continue that late.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have yet to find ANYTHING that works. I have tried all of these more than once and then some. I can not sem to get my son out! My husband doesn't want to even touch me we have had sex so much. I walk everyday only to get sore everywhere and swollen. I have drank all the teas and taken Castor oil... I just dont know what to do... can ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE?!?!?! I am 42 weeks along and miserable! My doc. doesn't want to induce me yet but he has not dropped and I have not effaced. I am dilated only 2cm but that has been for the last 6 weeks or so not going anymore. What to do???? HELP!

Ashly, hopefully things will start up since your membranes were stripped. Good luck!

I am 38 weeks pregnant and ready to have my baby it is getting so uncomfortable and very stressing wanting your baby here and waiting can put alot of stress on you taking baths and sleeping is all i want to do hoping contractions will start i am 3 cm dialated and i am wondering why i have not went in labor yet since he stripped my membranes twice well he told me the second time he did it it should work 24 to 48 hours from the time he does it it has only been thirty something hoping soon will be in labor.... But walking alot and going up hilld gets them contractions in gear...

Candace, one of the most important things labor is to make sure that your opinions and needs are being met. If you disagree with the midwives, see someone else who will induce you if that's what you want.

In the meantime, you can also check out our other articles about jumpstarting your labor, including Walking and Labor Induction and Self Induction of Labor.

i am 40 weeks this week i have 5 other children and been induced with every birth but this time i have midwives who think natural is best and wont consider induction until 42 weeks but this baby feels so big he hurts me so i am very interested in the natural ways to getting labor stimulated.

-- Contributed by: candace

Christina, most women say that walking can help get their labor moving. As long as you are cleared to do some long walking, you can give it a try. But most doctors will advise you against starting your labor this early.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I'm christina. I am 33 weeks. I am feeling pretty rough right now. Ihave four children. I've always delivered early. I feeling realy frightined about giving birth mthis time. I don't know why ? Are ther any suggestions?

-- Contributed by: christina

Amber, most doctor err on the side of caution when it comes to scheduling C-sections. Do you want to deliver vaginally or are you just hoping to let labor start on its own? Either way, make sure your doctor knows about your concerns. If you don't feel like you are being listened to, you may need to consider seeing a different doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Robbie, you're right, the castor oil isn't the best choice for induction, though some women swear by it.

Check out some of our other articles about labor induction, Walking and Labor Induction and on Self Induction of Labor for other tips. Good luck.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Candice, unless your doctor sees a medical reason to induce you early, you will likely need to wait it out. Some of the things mentioned here, like walking, might help get things started.

I am 37wks and I am being forced to have a c-section on oct. 1st if I do not go into labor on my own. I have tryed red raspberry leaf tea, bumppy roads and sex with lots of walking. I have no clue what to do with this pregnancy I am having lowerback pain that does not quit and I am waaaaay over this whole pregnancy thing I'm ready to move on to the labor part!!! HELP!

-- Contributed by: Candice

Shanay, walking is usually the best way to "get things moving," but most doctors will advise you to avoid trying to jumpstart your labor until you are at 40 weeks.

I dranked castor oil last night and this morning but still nothing happened ..If anyone can Help me by telling me how to do it naturally,i would luv it.By the way im 38wks

i was four days late with my son and took some castor oil in orange juice didn't even taste it...and sure enough i went into labor three hours later...now i am 39 weeks three days with my daughter and also 2cm dilated and lost my plug and have started the "bleeding show" but this time i want to try other methods like a warm bath. i can't do intercourse this time because it hurts. i've been walking and the bumpy roads, so i'm gonna hop in the bath. wish me luck... :-)

-- Contributed by: Jessica

Ashley, the best thing most women swear by is walking. You could also try warm baths or intercourse. Your doctor should also have some suggestions, but most women who try the castor oil don't have good experiences.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I'm 39 weeks pregnant and 2cm dialated babys head is all the way down, i can't take the pain and pressure anymore! with my last pregnancy i was 39 weeks and drank castor oil besides the taste and nausiating feeling from drinking it it was the best experience ever i emptyed my bowels that night (not diarrea) just normal bowel movements, the next morning i lost my plug, and that night at midnight exactly i went into labor and had my daughter 1145 that evening it was like a movie labor everything went great, but for some reason i can not bring myself to drinking the oil again it was the worst taste and i hated the feeling of pretty much vasiline sitting in my stomach... so if anyone can help me with some advice and things they did to safely start labor that would be great!

-- Contributed by: Ashley

I'm 37 weeks. Fourth pregnancy. With my other three, the only thing that really seemed to help was walking. a lot. I have tried spicy foods, raspberry tea and dressing, bumpy car rides. Nada. With my 1st pregnancy, I was 5 days overdue and did 100 jumping jacks. Later that afternoon, my water broke and I had my daughter the next day. The 2nd pregnancy, I walked around nearly half a day at an art festival and went into labor that night and had my son the next morning. The 3rd, I had a doctors appointment and the doc actually striped my cervix (ouch) and I walked around the mall for the afternoon, followed by sex with my hubby. Again, I was in labor by evening and had my 3rd son the next morning. So it seems that walking or other types of physical exercise does seem to hold some merit. I WOULD NOT try castor oil. Ick, for one .. Secondly, I have heard nothing but bad experiences from other women who have tried it. Good luck~

-- Contributed by: Desaree

Enter, since each woman's labor is so different, there's no real way to tell how close you are. Some women start labor before they are fully effaced while some women are fully effaced a while before their labor.

If you are at least 38 weeks pregnant, you might try walking to get your labor started.

I'm Now 38 Weeks 6 Days I Went Into Triage For Contractionsand Now I'm 50 Percent Effaced And About A Fingertip Dialated Does This Mean I Have A Long Way To Go?

-- Contributed by: Enter your name here

I think one of the most reliable way to help induce labor at home is defin. SEX. I was pregnant with my second child and i was so miserable wanting hum to be here and my husband and i had sex on the morning of my due date and i went to the bathroom to pee came out was walking thru the kitchen and i notice i had fluid running down my leg i knew it wasnt urine cause i just went to the bathroom and everytime i would walk closer and closer to my husband it would leak down a little more... I didnt start having contractions right away though i went to the hospial and they did one of those test strips to see if my water had broke and it did!!! But now im pregnant with my third and im going to try it again on my due date!!!

-- Contributed by: Brittany Sullivan

Enter,

before you try any other way to jumpstart your labor, you should first talk to your doctor to make sure it's safe. If you are not right at 40 weeks, you should wait a bit longer.

But if you are at 40 weeks, I've heard the most success stories with simply walking for labor induction.

Try eating something spicy. And caster oil will make you violently sick, but does cause contractions

Dan, This is God! You are obviously a man....You know not the pain of being past a due date, you know not the pain of being pregnant. Pregnant women do not need to be reminded to pray....they are praying everyday not to be pregnant anymore. They also have to endure tools like you - and I sit up here having a little giggle about it! Son you are a fool - children are not on loan - I give them away because if you have ever lived with a newborn, you would know that it is not a joyus experience....they cry and poop and feed constantly! And Dan for the record I am a woman!

Castor oil rubbed on my belly with a hot compress started contractions but they stopped. If the baby isn't ready to come out, no matter what you do, it's not coming out.

Don't forget about prayer. God will make His child come when He wants. Believe in the Creator to fulfill your wishes and have Joy knowing that He is with you always. Thank you Jesus for giving us another child to raise up Godly, knowing that child is on loan to us. Relax and have Joy God bless the children coming into this world.

I would not drink castro oil...One you cant rush these things and two there are no scientific studies proving its benefits, its accuracy to work, or the effects on a fetus.

I tried the Castor Oil when I was 39 weeks pregnant with my first child and it did not work. For some reason it did not give me diarrhea either, it just made me go to the bathroom. My little girl did not come out until she was 2 days past her due date.

-- Contributed by: Becca

castor oil isnt bad for ur baby- its not classed as food drink or nutrience so it passes strait thru ur body, hence goin to the toilet all the time. my sister tried it with her kid as did my mum with her three it worked for them. im goin to try it. im now 38 weeks. im goin to induce at 39.

-- Contributed by: stella

I would not drink CASTRO OIL... It will not make you go into labor, there are a lot of people who say it works but your baby is not going to come out until he/she is ready.

-- Contributed by: Jennifer

Raven, although some people believe castor oil will induce labor, it can also cause cramping and diarrhea. As a general rule, I don't really recommend it, but it shouldn't have any harm on your baby. You should let your doctor know if you are attempting at-home methods of inducing.

i drank some castro oil because i was over due is my baby okay and will it make me go into labor

Elizabeth,

C-sections are usually scheduled before a woman is expected to go into labor. However, you should contact your doctor immediately if you start to notice any potential signs of labor or symptoms that may indicate the baby is in distress.

my names Liz im 37 weeks pregnant today and i went into the hosptial yesterday cause i was having small contractions i was 1 1/2 cm dialated and baby was dropped really low i mean when she went to check my cervix he was right there at the opening. im scheduled to have a c-section on the 18th but i dont want to wait that long in misery and already contracting... do you think he is going to wait to come till im scheduled or maybe will it be sooner

-- Contributed by: elizabeth

Kerry, If you think you are having contraction, you might want to give your doctor or midwife a call. They can monitor you to see if you're labor has started and will be able to tell how its progressing by how far apart they are.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My baby was due a week ago today exactly and there was still no sign of him until now. I am not yet in labor (I don't think) although it could be very early labor. I just feel "different". On and off I feel like I am on the 'worst few days' of my period. I think you all know what I mean when I say that, it is the best way for me to explain the feeling. Lots of walking (although do not over do it, if you feel tired and need to rest then do so) and also I have been having my baths like I mentioned before. Maybe this is this start of something, I hope so anyway as otherwise I have to have another sweep tomorrow. I do not know if many people read these but it helps me get things off my chest without getting people like my mum and gran excited that the baby is coming, I don't want to do that if he is not. xx

-- Contributed by: Kerry

Kerry,

you're right...the baby isn't coming until he or she is ready. They don't know it's their due date, so we can't expect them to be on time. :)

Good luck!

Holly

The midwife also said that they do not consider you to be overdue until you are 41 weeks. The baby will come when he/she is ready, just enjoy the time you have to yourself before it all gets taken from you by your new bundle of joy. :)

Hi, I am 40 weeks and 5 days pregnant. I asked my midwife if it was safe to use castor oil and she said that there is no known risk to the baby if you use it but it will give you stomach cramps and the runs if you do. I have decided not to use it for now as labor alone will be bad enough without having to sit on the loo the whole time too. And just think, how embarassing it would be having diorreah in front of your birthing partner in the delivery ward? I would suggest a walk as being upright encourages the baby into the pelvis and try a warm but not hot bath. Apparantly a hot curry is supposed to help but I don't like curry so havent given it a go. Have a warm bath and re-live the moment you conceived as sex is supposed to help too.

Good Luck everyone

Kerry.xx

C'dar, personally, I wouldn't take the castor oil. It can cause bowel problems and sounds gross. If I were you, I'd try the raspberry tea, but ask your doctor first if there is any reason you shouldn't take it.

Keep in mind that due dates are usually just estimates, they can often be off by a few days. Afterall, your baby doesn't know it's due and there's no way to get him or her to cooperate with your schedule.

There are a few other things you can try, like nipple stimulation, intercourse, or even certain foods. Check out our new articles on Self Induction of Labor and Natural Induction of Labor. If none of this works, talk to your doctor who might be willing to medically induce if you go too far after your date.

I'm 39 weeks pregant and the sex thing just isn't working. I think I have tried every known position known to man and my baby just wants to stay on there!! What are the down sides to using castor oil and raspberry leaves? I may start drinkning raspberry tea soon if it won't hurt my baby.

-- Contributed by: C'dar Baun

Hi NM, first, talk to your doctors about your apprehension about the C-section and ask them if you can wait a few more days to see if labor starts on it's own. If you don't feel like your doctor is listening to you, try seeing another doctor in the practice or at the hospital where you will be delivering.

Then, start walking, which is one of the best ways to induce labor. You can also try nipple stimulation, intercourse, or even certain foods. Check out our new articles on Self Induction of Labor and Natural Induction of Labor.

Remember that due dates are just best guesses about when a baby is due. I don't think it's unreasonable for you to want to wait a few extra days, but if there are medical concerns about waiting you will need to consider the C-section. Good luck!

Im going to be 40 weeks and they are insisting that I have a c-section in only 4 days. There is no reason for the surgury except for issurance reasons. I have gone in labor with 3 other kids but for some reason this one doesn't want to come and I cant relax for 3 mins without thinking about the c-section and how hard it will be trying to take care of my other 3 kids.

I am 38 weeks pregnant and I tried castor oil last night. It didn't really do anyhting but give me diah. I have been having contractions but nothing that dilates my cervix. It is very frustrated but we have made it this far in our pregnancy, what is two more weeks .?.

-- Contributed by: Dallas

With my first child I was only dialated one centimeter also, but I went for a 2 mile walk with my mother-in-law and just tried to enjoy the quiet time and my son was here 8 days later. So my advice would be to just take a bath and realize that that baby is going to come whenever he or she wants. Its just a clue of what life with them will be like, they'll only do anything when they are ready. :) Just hang in there.

Hello,

I am currently 38 weeks and in the past two weeks, I have tried everything. I have been having contractions that come and go but none that will stay. First, I tried castor oil on 2 different occasions and it did not work. Next, I tried evening primrose capsules. I insert 1 into the vaginal area and took 1 orally each day for about a week and that did not work. I also purchased Red Raspberry Leaf Tea and I have been drinking that at least two times a day for the past week but still no baby. Nipple stimulation does work to onset contractions but they do not last very long. I give up. I am so miserable and ready to have my baby but it appears nothing will work. I also, had my membranes stripped about 3 days ago. I guess babies come when THEY are ready, not when we are ready!! Good luck but I would not recommend wasting your time or money.

-- Contributed by: Brandy

Kathy, there are many ways that doctors can induce, including using Pitocin. Your doctor will probably have several things in mind to start labor if you need help. Although it's true that going after your due date can increase your chances of a c-section, doctors prefer to let women go on their own and will usually try to induce labor first.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns and let him or her know that you'd prefer a vaginal birth. In the end, though, the important thing is that you and your baby have a healthy and safe labor and delivery, whether it's natural or via c-section

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have only one day until my due date and I feel I have done everything but I am still only one centimeter dialated. I am starting to panic because I read that the further over your due date you go the more of a risk there is to have to get a c-section. I want to do this completely natural though... Does anyone have any suggestions that can help me?

-- Contributed by: kathy

I am so ready to see my baby, the doctor says any day now but has been saying that for ever it seems like. Im 3 cm dialated and im just ready to start labor!!! I hate the constant pressure and im so sore.

-- Contributed by: Justine

i know how your feeling. im 3 days away from my due date and im having such horrible contractions but am only 1 centimeter dialted. Its taking forever. But try walking the stairs...thats what im going to resort to now. Good Luck!

-- Contributed by: Audrey

Lana, you are being very selfish. If the doctor felt your baby needed to be delivered, he would induce you the right way. Don't take a chance on hurting your baby just because you're impatient.

-- Contributed by: Marie

I second Kelsey's comments..truth be told, although we make general recommendations that may help move things along, it's up to the baby to decide when he or she wants to come out. There's no harm trying these methods, but patience is the only thing that will definitely work.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

fact is baby will come when he/she is ready , these things only encourage labor, ont worry about baby being too big, your body can do amazing things!trust it! I would suggest to continue walking everyday for as long as you can stand it !!!!

-- Contributed by: Kelsey

hi lana, iam going to be 38 weeks on tuesday and i have tryed sex and it worked my cervix is 1 and a half centimeters dialated iam currently trying other things such as hot baths at night and chocolate can help aswell. i hope my advice has helped you hun.

-- Contributed by: tanya

Oh my goodness, I am in your exact situation. Age and everything. Ive tried almost all of that. The only thing that I refuse to try is castor oil. I heard it doesnt work anyways. But I know how you feel. My doctor even told me not to gain any more weight because I am gaining so fast. But why dont you want to try the pineapple? Thats been my favorite food since ive been pregnant so that why i dont think its working for me. I heard that maybe a swing works. or rock back and forth on an excersize ball. Try that. But if you get any luck then let me know what it was lol.

-- Contributed by: Stacey

Both a hormone in semen and the act of female orgasm can help open up the cervix and it's worked for a lot of women. It doesn't exactly push the baby out but it does get the process started.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

does sex really help push baby out

-- Contributed by: maroa jawad

Hi Lana, none of the methods to induce labor are fullproof, or even based on science in some cases. They are often just things that work for some people but not for others. Sounds like you are in the second half of the group.

The only guarenteed way to start labor is by using Pitocin which your doctor may suggest using if you go past your due date. But in most cases, a doctor won't induce early and would rather let you go to your due date. Talk with your doctor if you are uncomfortable and ask him or her for their suggestions.

Good luck!
