Companies..., it's unfortunate that your employer did that, but I'm afraid there isn't anything that you can do since there wasn't anything in writing. Perhaps your employer can allow you to keep your current insurance for a few months? You may need to offer to pay a higher premium, but it would probably be cheaper than finding individual insurance on your own.

After 3 years I am pregnant and my employer just mention a month before I am due they do not have maternity policy and they would not be giving me insurance once I leave to have my baby. They were exempt from having a policy due to their size and will not be holding my job. Never thought any issues would occur when hired at interview they stated no problem starting a family we are a family like business and wouldn't be an issue of course nothing in writing. So we have NO rights working for a small company with large financial income and would not be a hardship to this company.

Jodi, probably not. Although it's not fair, most insurance companies probably wouldn't issue a policy to a pregnant woman. If you have other insurance already, you may already be covered or you could ask your physician for recommendations about local insurance companies that might offer coverage.

Is there any Disability Insurance that you can buy after conception?

Michelle, you will need to look into your state's Maternity Leave Laws and the Family Medical Leave policies. Maternity disability is for women who have medical problems during their pregnancy and need time off, but FMLA also covers parents who adopt.

I am adopting a newborn, do state maternity disability apply the same as if I had a child naturally?

Carly,

that will depend a lot on your company and what restrictions they place on Maternity Leave. Check with your HR department and read our article, California Maternity Leave, for links to other resources that can help you out.

I live in California. If I take 4 weeks off before my delivery for an off-work order, can I still claim disability after my c-section since I can't work for at least 8 weeks?

Hi Maggie,

they have to hold your job for the 12 weeks that you are on leave though some states may require that they hold it longer if you take a longer leave. Check with your state's Department of Labor for more details.
