Yellow,

anytime you doubt the results of a pregnancy test, it's always a good idea to take another one. The symptoms you mention are some of the early signs of pregnancy, but they could also be a sign of PMS or the flu or a combination of several things. Either way, you should talk to your doctor about your irregular cycle. Only having a period every few months is very unusual and will make it difficult to know when you are ovulating.

I have been on Loestrin for years (generic version called Junel) and my last period was 3 months ago (which was typical over the years, to get it every 3 months). I got off the pill and completed the whole pack when I got married. With my calculations, my next period after my wedding was suppose to be this past Tuesday (since it's also been 3 months) and today is Friday. I took a pregnancy test last week and it came out negative, although I think if I take it again now, it might be the opposite. This week, I started to break out on my face & neck, I had a leg cramp on Sunday, and my nipples were extremely painful and hard for 5 days (usually my breasts just swell up and get sensitive before my period). I also tripped a few times this week..but I have no idea if that has anything to do with this.. I'm just trying to learn about my body now that I'm off the hormones/the pill... I plan on taking a pregnancy test in the morning... who thinks I'm pregnant? THANKS!

Stacy,

for now, continue taking the pills as normal but check in with your doctor. Did you start the pills late or have you had an irregular period? I think you will want to continue taking the pills as directed, but you will need to ask your doctor for sure.

I am on the FE and iam on my third pack. im on the third week of pills and i have started my cycle im not supposed to start till next week is this normal of not. what should i do

Lauren, I don't think this is related to the Loestrin. Some women experience urinary incontinence as they get older or if the bladder muscles weaken for some reason. If it continues, see your doctor since there are several medications that may make this better. But I don't see any relation between the pill and the leakage.

I have been on Loestrin for 2 months now. The first month I spotted but it stopped after the first set of pills and today I noticed something else that has never happened to me before and I was wondering if it is a side effect. I was standing at work not even moving, talking, laughing and I felt a little urine come out. This happened for a few hours. I hope to god this doesn't happen all the time...any thoughts?!

Whitney,

most women report shorter periods on the Fe, not on the regular. But it's possible that you've had the reverse. If the periods stay short or are troubling you, you should mention it to your doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I may have missed it, but on regular loestrin do you still have shorter periods? My doctor just switched me from loestrin fe to the regular. The iron was to high for my body. Im just curious it they are highly similar.

Laura, you may need to speak with your doctor about stopping the pill for a month or so and restarting it. For some reason, your hormones seem to be working on a different schedule from the pills. Having a regular cycle for a month and restarting them with your next period might get things back on track.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I'm so upset. Fifth month on this pill and after months of breakthough bleeding (feel like all i do is bleed), I'm now 8th day on a period but plavebo pills don't start until thurs. And my periods are still lasting 6 to 7 days, where are the 3 day periods> HELP? Never took BC before, I'm 41 on it for peri menopausal symptoms. Don't know what to do! Help!

-- Contributed by: Laura

Boriala, having some breakthrough bleeding is not unusual, especially during the first month you are on the pill since your body is getting used to the hormones. If the bleeding continues, contact your physician. In the meantime, keep taking the pill so your cycle will get regular.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I started Loestrin Fe a week and a half ago, two days after I ended my period. My period started again yesterday. Is this normal?

-- Contributed by: Boriala

Crystal, unfortunately, all versions of the Birth Control Pill have some side effects associated with them, but not women experience them. Even if you do have some side effects, they oten go away.

If you do have problems with the pill, your doctor can give a different type that might be better for you.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I am starting this pill on Sunday and I am very happy. But Im seeing all of the side affects and Im kind of nervouse because I dont want any of that to happen to me.

Janine, as you are probably aware, melasma often occurs during pregnancy, though it can be associated with the pill. Have you asked your doctor if she thinks it's related to the pill? If not, you may want to talk to her about it to make sure it's not something more serious.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I was on Loestrin for a year and have been off of it now for about 4 months. I developed now Melasma on my forehead and a slight discoloration on my upper lip. Does anyone knoe if this will go away?

-- Contributed by: Janine

Claire, since you definitely want to avoid a pregnancy, it's a good idea to get Plan B Birth Control. Women who just start using the pill should use a backup form of birth control for the first month to be safe, but since your method failed, you will need to take extra precautions.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

How long does Loestrin 24Fe take to kick in? I've been on it for about two weeks, and tonight the condom completely ruptured (has NEVER happened before) right at the WRONG moment. Am I protected from pregnancy or do I need to get Plan B?

-- Contributed by: Claire

Amy,

I read over the prescribing info and didn't see anything about not using Loestrin if you have a family history of uterine cancer. Since you are concerned, you should talk to your doctor about it and see if they would prefer you taking a different type of pill.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My physician just prescribed me with Loestrin. I am a first time birth control pill user. From the internet, I found that someone who have history of uterine cancer should not take Loestrin. My grandmother died from uterine cancer. So I am not sure if I should take Loestrin. Anyone can help?

-- Contributed by: Amy

Jaclynn,

although it could be lighter, you should still get a period with Loestrin. But I've just looked at some message boards and find other women who also miss their period while on this, so it must not be too unusual. Can the doctor who prescribed the pill to you give you a test?

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

sorry to write again. i just started the loestrin 24 this month (switching over from a 35mcg femcon) and i didnt get a period. i guess im really worried im pregnant, although we did use a condom, but theres always that chance the pill wasnt effective yet and the condoms not 100%. i live in another country and cant get access to a birth control test so i wouldnt have to ask you :) besides all that, is it normal to miss my period on this pill the 1st month starting it? thank you!

-- Contributed by: jaclynn

Jaclynn, most birth control pills are highly effective at preventing pregnancy as long as they are taken correctly. Lower dose pills aren't any less effective than higher dose ones.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have heard that low estrin fe pills do not allow for more of a chace to get pregnant but on the other hand i have talked to others that say it depends on how much hormones are in your body to begin with. please tell really how it is. are the low dose pills only so you dont have break through bleeding? and are the higher ones like femcon really better in helping you not get pregnant. thank you very much!

-- Contributed by: jaclynn

BMH,

according to the prescribing info, you should still get your period on Loestrin but it should be shorter. However, I just did a Google search and found a lot of other women who missed their periods while taking it, especially after they took it for several months.

If this keeps you on edge, you might want to switch to another pill. It defeats the purpose of birth control if you are always having to take pregnancy tests anyway.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i need to know if it normal not to have a period at all with this pill? i have been on it for a year and up until last month i had a period like normal. i missed last month and it appears that i am not going to have one this month but i have also taken 4 pregnacy test and they are all negative. what do you suggest?

-- Contributed by: bmh

Carly, since it's a prescription, you can only get Loestrin, or any birth control pill, from your doctor. I'm not sure about the seizures...Loestrin's prescribing info does not list seizures as one of the side effects, but you will want to discuss it with your doctor if you are already prone to having them.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi,

I have two questions. Where can I find Loestrin Fe if not here on this site? Would it still make me have seizures even if I'm on anti-seizure meds?

-- Contributed by: Carly Brooke Steffen

Eliza, sounds like Loestrin may not be the right pill for you. Mood swings can be a side effect, but the other things you describe usually aren't. If there aren't any other factors that could be causing these symptoms and you are confident that it's the pill, you should talk to your doctor about switching to something else.

I just switched from jasmin to loestrin 24 on advice of a doctor who saw that I had just been diagnosed with kidney disease. I started taking loestrin after my last cycle of jasmin. Despite no dietary or exercise changes from my normal routine, I broke out around my mouth and nose the first week on the new pill, and the second week woke up in the middle of the night bleeding. This has never happened to me. I have been bleeding for 5 days so far,no lightening...and I wasnt due to get my period for another 3 weeks! I have also been very emotional and achy... Is this normal behavior when switching to Loestrin? please advise. thankyou

Heidi,

since I'm not a medical professional and do not know your background, I'm not going to advise you on what pill to take, but I think your doctor should be able to help you find one that will help with your symptoms while avoiding the weight gain. THere are pills on the market that claim to help prevent weight gain.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Christy,

I think you should continue taking the pills, but ask your doctor or pharmacist for sure.

Hello, I just had a gyno appointment because I have irregular periods. I had an internal ultrasound done to check up on things. My gyno came back and told me that I am not quite poly cystic, but I have more fibers (I think thats what she called them) than normal. She said I have a risk of becoming poly cystic, and a way to reduce this is to take birth control. The only problem holding me back is that I really really do not want to gain weight. Which birth control should I try? Do I need to?

-- Contributed by: Heidi

I have started using loestrin 24 fe at the the begining of the month and since then i have gotten two break through bleeding and now i have been bleeding very heavy for about six days. I this normal. Do i continue taking the pills non-stop or stop and start a fresh pack after i stop bleeding

-- Contributed by: CHRISTY

Hi Lisa, you should talk to your OB/Gyn and maybe switch to another birth control. Although some women do take a pill that prevents periods, Loestrin isn't one of them and you should be having regular periods.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I've started Loestrin over the summer and its been 3 months since my last period. The first two months I had it almost every day and now I don't even get a period. Will I get my period again? Is this safe?

-- Contributed by: lisa

Hi Sarah, skin changes or acne is listed as a side effect of Loestrin, but it usually occurs just on the face. Are you on any other medications that could react to the sun?

You might want to try a different pill to see if that makes these patches go away.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I went to my doctor in the summer because I develop these red itchy patches after being in the sun. She told me it was due to my birth control and to stay out of the sun while on the pill. It is November and I have developed head to toe skin irritations just as before. It feels as though I have itchy sunburn, but I haven't beeen in the sun for months. can birth control cause these patches?

Hi Maria,

it's common to have some breakthrough bleeding or spotting during the first 3 months that you are on the pill. It should stop after your next cycle. If not, talk to your doctor, but it sounds like normal spotting to me. Do you get your period normally?

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi, I have been on Loestrin Fe for the last year or so, the last 2 months i have been bleading in the middle of the pack. It lasts for a couple of days and the bleeding is heavier than when I am on my period. Pregnancy test is negative, and ideas?

-- Contributed by: Maria

Hi April, yes, you're protected. The last row of pills, the inactive ones, are just there to keep you on track with your schedule. Unlike the other pills you take the rest of the month, the inactive pills don't have any affect on your hormones, which is what allows you to get a period.

During the month, your ovulation is stopped by the pills, which is how you would conceive. You won't ovulate during the last week of pills, so you're safe.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

are you protected when you are taking the last brown pills in your pack?

-- Contributed by: april

Hi Jessica, so you had sex last month, didn't see a period, and are now finishing up your next pack of pills, right? Since the pregnancy test was negative and you don't mention noticing any of the early signs of pregnancy, I'd say you just missed a period. That can happen sometimes, even on the pill.

If you miss it again this month and are concerned, call your doctor. But I suspect they won't be too worried either.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i'm on loestrin Fe and during the thrid month i had sex. i havn't had a period since and i'm ending my fourth pack. I've taken a pregnancy test and it came up negative. Any clue of whats going on?

-- Contributed by: jessica

Brianna, you should usually only need to use a backup method for the first month if you are starting the new pill right at the time your old pack is finished. So if you would usually start a new pack of Loestrin on a Sunday, you should start Loestrin 24 on the same day. If you switch mid cycle or miss some days in between your packs, it could take an extra cycle for your body to "catch up" with the new medication.

But, since you are just switching from one version to another, I think you should be fine with the switch. Ask you doctor or pharmacist to be sure.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I used to take ortho tricylen lo and then switched to regular loestrin and when I did, I had to use a back up method for 2 months. My periods are 7 days still and I want to switch to Loestrin 24, would I have to use a backup for 2 months as well?

-- Contributed by: Brianna

Sabrina, it depends on what color the pills are that you missed and what week you are in. If the missed pills happened in week 1 or 2, you should double up on your doses for two days and continue the pack as normal. If you missed them in week 3 or 4, the answer is more complicated and depends on whether you started on a Sunday or on the day your period started. Clear as mud?

In any case, use a backup method of birth control for this month just to be safe.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I'm taking the Loestrin Fe and I missed taking the pill for two days and I started my period. I was under the impression that I should resume taking the pills but I don't know. What should I do?

-- Contributed by: Sabrina

Hi Kathryn, according to the Loestrin website, a decreased sex drive is one of the side effects of the medicaiton. The medication affects everyone differently, but this sounds like an unfortunate problem you'll need to deal with on Loestrin.

It really comes down to how much it bothers you. Some of the side effects, like nausea or dizziness, can make daily like difficult and are worth discontinuing the medication. If your lack of sex drive is drastic and is causing a lot of problems, you should talk to you doctor about finding a different birth control pill.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have been taking Loestrin 24fe for about 6 months now and i really like it overall but my biggest side effect seems to be a complete drop off in my sex drive. Is this normal?

-- Contributed by: kathryn

Junel 1/20 is a generic version of Loestrin 21, so it should act the same. I would think that you should have gotten your period by now, so please call your pharmacist or OB/GYN to discuss. Maybe you just need a different pill that will work better with your cycle.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i was taking the othro evra for about 3months then decided to switch to pills my docter recommended loestrin21 but my pharmasist gave me junel 1/20 does that make a difference? i also havent had a peroid since i started the pills 3months ago. is that normal??

Hi Brittany, taking a birth control pill regulates your cycle, so after a few months you should get your period during the iron pill days. It might take a month or two for your period to get on track with the pills, but just keep taking the pills at the same time every day and make sure you don't miss any.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I just got started on the pill and im still a little confused it says your period comes on the time u take the iron pills but i have early periods and my doctor told me to take it the day i started so im a little confused.
