Hi Andrew, based on the info I just read at the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, both you and the baby's mom can sign an "Acknowledgment of Paternity Affidavit" form at the hospital after the baby's birth. You may still need to get a paternity test later to confirm. Check out the Office of Child Support's FAQ for more info.

Hi Peter,

since your dad is willing to take a DNA test and you don't need the results for any legal reasons, you should be able to order a test over the Internet. The American Association of Blood Banks lists Orchid Cellmark in Oxfordshire, UK, as an accredited facility. They might be a good place to start.

Murray, You might be able to get a DNA test if there are living relatives of your father who are willing to provide a sample or if you have something, like a hairbrush, that would contain his DNA. The Association of Blood Banks are a good place to start and might be able to provide you with more resources.

Anthony,

free DNA testing is usually only available if it's court-related, in which case the court or a laywer will recommend a company.

You might be able to find some local resources through the Department of Social Services.

Elizabeth, free DNA testing is usually only available to moms and dads in the court system who need to determine custody or support issues. There are some low cost DNA tests that you can order over the Internet if you are testing just for your own knowledge.

Tricia, free DNA testing is hard to find. Your best bet is to contact the Office of Support Enforcement, which is linked above, to find out if there free DNA tests av available to you.

Michael, paternity testing is usually only done for free if there is a court case involved where parental support is being determined. There are some low cost DNA tests that you can purchase over the Internet, but they will only help if you have someone to compare the results to. If the man who raised you is still alive, you may be able to get a test with him or you will need to track down the man on your birth certificate.

Tina, there is a link in the article above to the Office of Support Enforcement. If you haven't already tried them, they might be able to help.

You can also get at-home DNA tests that can be ordered online. They may not hold up in court but should give you valid results.

You could also try to determine your conception date based on your daughter's birthday if that helps.
