I thought I might be pregnant because me and my husband had unprotected sex and around ten days later I experienced brown blood that wasn't heavy at all come and it was not my normal period. I am usually heavy. however, two days later it changed and now my flow is extremely heavy like my normal period. Is there a chance I was pregnant but had a miscarriage. could that happen that early?

JP1981,

so you took the pregnancy test after having the bleeding, right? If so, you are probably still pregnant. The bleeding you noticed may have been implantation bleeding or it could have just been from changes related to an early pregnancy. Did you have any pain with bleeding? Since you got a positive test result, you should follow up with your doctor, who will give you a blood-based pregnancy test and confirm a pregnancy.

Not sure if you can help but saw some useful things so far. I am 5 weeks pregnant and last week (when my period was due) my partner and I started to have sex (I was unaware I was pregnant at this point). He fingered me and I noticed I had started bleeding quite red blood - this stopped soon after but now I don't know if I'm still pregnant (the test was done after this). Thanks

Sindi, I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriages, but I think you need to see a different Ob/Gyn and have some fertility testing. Some doctors recommend Prometrium to women who have had miscarriages and it sounds like your hormone levels should at least be tested to see if your progesterone is low. Five miscarriages in a year is pretty extreme and you need to be examined more thoroughly.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I've in the year alone had almost 5 miscarriages, 2 of which were not viable pregnancies. Usually I know by the 3rd day that I've conceived and a few days later I feel a persistent dull ache on my mid lower back. Before the 10th day over the weekend, this ache turned to extreme pain and it was the entire lower back and I had a brown discharge for about 2 days. I knew the pregnancy was no longer viable at that point. My OB/GYN says there's nothing wrong with my reproductive organs despite losing pregnancies 5 times. For days after the discherge I still have a persistent dull ache in my lower back. What do you think?

Rhonda,

my first thought was also that it might be part of early menopause, but since you have a rising level of HCG, you must be pregnant. Sometimes early pregnancies can be very hard to see on an ultrasound. And, spotting is pretty common in early pregnancy. I'm glad your doctor is following you closely. Please let us know how it progresses.

Hi - I am 2 weeks shy of my 44th birthday. No children. I had my normal period on the day I should have. Nothing out of the ordinary. Then 14 days later I started bleeding again - heavier with some clotting. I called the Dr. - then it stopped - then 7 days later started what seemed like a normal period again. I go in to the Dr. he does takes a euteran sample to test for polyps but we also discuss perimenopause. It comes back with evidence of conception. I then go for both an external and internal ultrasound which shows nothing. He tells me I have miscarried and wants to monitor my HCG levels to determine next course. (D&C or medication to expel.) I just got a call from him today that says my HCG levels have gone from 900 to 1300 and this may very well be a viable pregnancy! I now have to wait another week to test my blood again and possibly another ultrasound. How is this possible??? I would be about 7 weeks - shouldn't there have been something detected in the ultrasound? What about all the bleeding? Clearly this is not normal. I am in complete shock and now have to wait another week! Any insight??

Keziah,

I don't think you had a miscarriage. It's more likely that you just had some breakthrough spotting, which is more common in the first year or so that you are on it. Since you had such unexpected pain around the same time, you should see your doctor to make sure that there aren't any other health concerns going on.

im using depo-provera (the shot) as a birth control method. i have been on it for a year now. of course im not supposed to get pregnant, but it's always possible; im also not supposed to have periods. if i was pregnant i was between 7 and 22 days. yesterday i had this sudden pain in my lower abdomen, a bit later i was bleeding. the pain wore off after a bit. i am no longer bleeding. do you think maybe i had a miscarriage without knowing i was pregnant, or i had some strange few hour period? any responses would be appreciated

-- Contributed by: keziah

Elizabeth, the doctor may be able to tell by doing a Blood-based Pregnancy Test, which will give a good idea of whether the pregnancy hormone is present in your body. If you were pregnant and have already miscarried, you should have started bleeding by now. Please follow up with your doctor.

i had a preg test last week and i was positive. now its negative. i am having serious cramps. my periods are 1 week late. can the doctor tell weather i was preg or not

Elaine, it's a good sign that you aren't having any of the other signs of miscarriage. As for the heartbeat, I've heard of other pregnancies that turned out fine despite not seeing the heart early on. At this point, worrying is only going to add to the stress of pregnancy, so although it will be tough, try to take time to relax and rest.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Emily, you should see your doctor if you just had or are now having a miscarriage. Depending on how far along you were, it's important to make sure that all of the tissue is gone and that your body is healing properly.

Based on the symptoms, I knew I was pregnant. Yesterday I went for my first sonar. I was 100% sure I was 8 weeks pregnant, based on our last intercourse and the date of my last period. However, the sonar information revealed that I am only 6 weeks pregnant, based on the size of the fetus. There was also no heartbeat yet. I am scheduled for a follow-up in a week's time. According to the doctor, a heartbeat together with a growth in fetus size will determine a miscarriage or not. The following week is going to be a very stressful week. I am already convinced it is a miscarriage based on the fact that the sonar information doesn't correspond with my dates. Other than the heartbeat, I am not showing any other signs of a miscarriage. Are my concerns valid?

-- Contributed by: Elaine

If you have just had a miscarriage but feel fine, is it vital to go to a doctor?

-- Contributed by: Emily

Moe, unless your doctor tells you to stop taking the medication, you should keep taking it. I agree that it seems pointless to continue if you have already miscarried, but I don't want to advise you otherwise. If you haven't started a period yet, you might not have miscarried yet, but definitely follow up with your doctors as soon as you can.

After missing my period by a few days & testing negative on a take home pregn. test I was told that my blood test showed a low positive for pregnancy - however my estrogen & progesterone was also very low. I was put on prometrium & estradiol 2x a day. Three days later I took another blood test which should my pregnancy levels dropped...meaning the pregnancy wasn't viable. I was told I would get my period in a few days which hasn't happened. I am still on the medication and can't reach the doctor's office. I am not sure if I should stop the medications. Not too thrilled with still carrying a 'failed' pregnancy - no matter how early in the pregnancy it was...upsetting either way.

Nychole, I think the tissue was related to the biopsy rather than a miscarriage. You probably had to take a pregnancy test before the procedure, which most have been negative or they wouldn't have continued with the biospy. Since the followup test after the clot was also negative, it's highly unlikely it was a miscarriage. HCG stays in your body for several weeks following a miscarriage so it would have shown up on the test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I had a cervical biopsy and about a day later I had severe cramping and heavy clotty bleeding. It was around the same time I should've had my period but something came out of me that was not a blood clot. It was much bigger, and looked more pink than red like a clot. I went to the doctor the next day and told him that I thought it may have been a miscarriage he gave me a pregenacy test and it was negative... Is it possible that this was a miscarriage?

-- Contributed by: nychole

Susan,

sounds like you are having some Pregnancy Bleeding, which can be a normal part of pregnancy. Contact your doctor and discuss with her the amount of discharge and how long it lasts, but it's hopefully not a sign of anything serious.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi there im almost 9weeks pregnant and getting a brownish discharge since ths morning is it normal and its my first pregnancy what should i do

-- Contributed by: Susan

Kay,

a very early miscarriage shouldn't have much of a lasting effect on your body, so it might be possible to go back to a normal cycle. The next period might be a little delayed, but it shouldn't take long to get back on track.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Ria, whenever you feel anything you think is abnormal during your pregnancy you must go see a doctor IMMEDIATELY.

-- Contributed by: Kay

If you miscarry very early (within the first 9 weeks) will you still have a normal period the next month?

-- Contributed by: Kay

Ria,

you might be having some problems with your pelvic muscles. You may actually have a hernia, which is alower abdomen pain that can be aggravated by sneezing. Give your doctor a call right away.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Im 10 weeks pregnant now. Lately im really suffering from abdominal pains and lower back pains. There are times that it is tolerable but most of the time its not. There are also times that I have brownish discharge but not all times. I also dont feel anything on my tummy right now though i know that im pregnant. The last time i took the transvaginal ultrasound is when i am 4weeks 3 days pregnant and it is very very painful. It lasted the whole night. I also experienced having the most painful abdominal pain when I sneeze and I dont know why. I need an honest advise about this. Thanks a lot.

-- Contributed by: Ria

E.,

do you know for sure that you are pregnant? Some bleeding during pregnancy is normal but not usually to the amount you've described. If you haven't already, call your doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Im not sure if im having miscarriage. Im having menses 3 times in a row with 5 days interval in between. I noticed that there's a blood clog (small & big). But I dont feel any pain of abdomen.

-- Contributed by: E

LS, it might be an early miscarriage, but it might also just be an unusual period. If you were pregnant, it would have been a very early miscarriage and you probably wouldn't have noticed a sac. The sac forms at 4 weeks and is only about 3 minimeters, so there isn't really anything to see.

But, regardless of what this is, you should see a doctor since it breaks the norm of your period. Even without insurance, there should be women's health clinics nearby that can treat you for little or no payment. Try contacting a woman's resource center for help locating services.

I am wondering if I am experiencing an early miscarriage. I started bleeding about 5 days ago out of no where. Normally when I start my period I get spotting for a day or so and then bleed heavier. It's been about a month since my last period but I suffer from PCOS and the last few periods have been 2 months apart. I have been very heavy these last 5 days and last night I experienced something I have never before. I had a wet spot in my underwear and on my sweat pants and figured I had bleed through my tampon. When I went to the bathroom the wet spots were clear (not blood). It was not urine...and I felt the wetness on my inner thigh which felt kind of sticky like. I started wondering if that could have been the sac and that my bleeing is an actual early miscarriage. I don't have insurance right now so I hate to go see a doctor if I'm just looking into this too much. I have felt yucky all week and super tired the week before my "period" started. My lower back aches and once and awhile I feel a tug from my right side. This morning when I went to the bathroom I noticed a very long clot of blood. I am use to some clotting but I'm not sure if my mind is playing tricks on me or not. Do you think these are signs of a miscarriage? I'm curious as to what the wet spots were. Is it possible to have an early sign of the "water breaking", aka loosing the fluid sac at such an ealr stage. I couldn't have been more than 4 weeks if I was ever pregnant.

-- Contributed by: LS

Bretnie, yes, it might have been a miscarriage. Have you seen a doctor since having the positive pregnancy tests? If not, follow up with your doctor to find out exactly what is going on.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I was 14 days late and took 2 pregnancy tests which were positive.A week later i started bleeding and passed a really big clump. Could it have been a miscarriage?

-- Contributed by: Bretnie

Megan, I'm not sure how much time has passed between your period and this discharge, but it could just be the end of your period. If this was your first time having sex, it might be from your hymen, but that's usually bright red blood.

Take a pregnancy test to ease your mind, but I think this is just some abnormal bleeding. If you're very concerned, talk to your GYN.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

well when i had sex i just got off my period. he wore a condom and it didnt break and im getting brownish/bloody stuff coming out of my vaginal area. and im only 14 and i dont no what to do?

Daniela,

is the bleeding occuring at the time you expected your period? If so, it sounds like a period and not a miscarriage. If the bleeding is occuring after a missed period, it might be a miscarriage but you can't really tell for sure.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i got my period but its not normal its like a darker color and i dont really have cramps its just really heavy. the condom broke and im not sure if im just having a really heavy period or if its a miscarriage. what should i do?

-- Contributed by: daniela

Rosemarie, your friend will need to take a pregnancy test. Without evening knowing if she is definitely pregnant, it's purely speculation as to whether she is having a miscarriage. The bleeding may just be signs of an irregular period, but she should contact her doctor if it continues.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have a friend and she already had her orupd for this month but after that she started having pregnancy liked symptoms and hasn't tooken a test yet because she started bleeding again for 2 days and it was dark and heavy she is not sure if she is pregnate or was having a miscarriage what do you think it is

-- Contributed by: rosemarie

Tabitha, sometimes miscarriages happen even under the best conditions and can't be prevented. In your case, it's not really clear if you were ever pregnant since you got your period as normal. The spotting might be a sign of [[Implantation Bleeding | implantation] but it might also be a part of your cycle.

If you don't successfully conceive in a year, contact your doctor to find out if you should consider fertility treatments.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have had two cycles of implantation symptoms including the light spotting but then about 3 days before my period is due I'm have no symptoms of pregnancy then I get my period. I'm taking pregnancy multivit how come I can't keep the blastocyst implanted?

-- Contributed by: Tabitha

Naomi, Without having taken a pregnancy test, there won't be any real way to know if you were pregnant. Taking the pill shouldn't have caused a miscarriage, but there are many miscarriages that happen without any known reason. It sounds like you stopped the pill before your cycle ended, which could cause mid-cycle bleeding and spotting. I think this is a more likely situation. How much time passed before your last period and this bleeding? If it was only 2-3 weeks, a pregnancy probably wouldn’t have progressed far enough to cause the tissue you noticed.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i was having unprotected sex and then decided to get back on the pill..my question is that if i was pregnant and i started the pill could that cause a miscarriage? i was on the pill for only half of the time..when i stopped about 4 days later i had heavy pain in my lower abdomen and i started bleeding just like my normal period. Then i saw a slug-like red tissue thing i was about and inch long..for 2 days i got tiny tissue pieces but not as big as the first. Im concerned it could a miscarriage. what can i do to find out besides going to the doctor.

-- Contributed by: naomi

Savannah, it might be possible that you had a miscarriage, which is what caused your period to be so late, but that doesn't really explain why it would be orange. You don't mention your age, but you might be starting early menopause, which could make your periods start occuring further apart.

Although you don't have insurance, you should make an appointment to see an OB/Gyn. There may be a women's clinic or health center in your area that works specifically with women without insurance or that offers a lower rate.

My husband and I tried to conceive this month, and I was 100% sure I was pregnant, I was 1 1/2 weeks late then my usual period...(although my period last month was also 1 week late so I waited until I was passed that point to get excited) ...I had sore breasts, nausea, & fatigue, but decided to test the next morning...when I got up a noticed that I had started my period and was deeply let down...but the pain was horrible, a lot worse then my normal cramps, and then period was heavier...could it be because my period was so late? also, i don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the color was strange, almost an orange...please, I have no insurance at the moment, and need help...

another thing, is there some reason my periods are coming further and further apart...this period came at day 42 when I usually get it at day 29 or 30.... Thanks for you time!

-- Contributed by: Savannah

Melony, you may have had an early miscarriage, but it should have shown up on the ER's test. More likely, you had a false positive on your pregnancy test. The symptoms you mention are related to pregnancy, but they could also be caused by other hormones due to your late period.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I had a positive home pregnancy test the day after my missed period. 11 days later I woke up to a full blown period. I went to the ER and they did a blood test that came out negative. I just don't understand, I was having sore breasts and everything. Do you think it was a false pregnancy?

-- Contributed by: Melony

CMM, it might be an early miscarriage but it mmight also just be some Pregnancy Bleeding. If the bleeding increases to a steady flow, it is probably a miscarriage. Alert your doctor to the spotting if you haven't already gotten your appointment. Good luck

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My LMP was July 25, 2008, we are trying to get pregnant. I was supposed to get my peroid on Friday, but didn't. I took a home test and I got a positive result. I haven't seen the doctor yet, waiting for an appointment. This morning I had cramping, and some spotting. Am I having a miscarriage?

-- Contributed by: CMM

Erika,

Pregnancy Bleeding is not uncommon, especially in the first few weeks. It doesn't necessarily mean you are having a miscarriage. Follow up with Ob/Gyn, who might be able to provide you with more information than the ER.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Angelica, most home pregnancy tests are accurate on the first day of your missed period, so you might have tested a day or two too early depending on when you conceived. Drinking a lot of water could dilute your urine, especially if you have low levels of HCG, indicating a very early pregnancy. Try testing first thing in the morning and cutting back on some water overnight.

im 3-4 weeks pregnant and i have been having bleeding since saturday, its light and i dont need a pad or anything. but i do have some light cramping., i went to er yesturday. (didnt learn anything) and they did ultrasound and they said they didnt see a baby. is it a miscarriage or just to early?

-- Contributed by: erika

I had a positive blood test result for pregnancy with very low levels of hcgg. At that time I was 11 days past ovulation. My blood will be retested again on Monday. I took a pregnancy test today that was negative (13 days past ovulation). I'm afraid I have miscarried or have an ectopic pregnancy. I have't noticed any bleeding. Just today I noticed some yellowish brown cervical fluid w/ a streak of blood in it. This happened once this morning and once this afternoon. Other than that I have been fine. I also drink a lot of water...could this be affecting the over-the-counter pregnancy tests? Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm major stressed out...thanks.

-- Contributed by: Angelica

T, if you do an image search for "early miscarriages" you might find something but there really won't be any definitive way to know if that's what you had. Since you were on the pill, you shouldn't have been pregnant but some woman do get Pregnant on Birth Control.

If you have concerns, you should call your doctor but hopefully your period will return to normal.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i am just looking for clearafication. i dont think i was pregnant but i had a period that was really light but quichkly turned from red to brown. last night i found a large white clear tissue a little bigger than a quarter with brownish clots connected. there are no pictures to know if that was really a miscarraige. im on the pill which could have causes something. im just wondering if anyone can help or knows where pictures of early miscarriage or sacs looks like, thanks

-- Contributed by: T

Nikki,

I don't know what an early miscarriage would look like. Many women simply pass clots and do not notice the tissue that you saw. It sounds like it could be part of the sac, but I don't think you'll have anyway to know.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have been 3 weeks late for my period, had really sore breasts, and felt really tired. I started heavy bleeding yesterday and had lots of clots.

I observed a white tissue, and had it in a jar of water for the day. It looked fluffy and had a blood clots attatched. It's driving me mad, because there are no image results about "gestational sac" or what pregnancy tissue looks like.

I have no health insurance, and was curious what that tissue could be.

Aimee, sorry to hear about your miscarriage. It can be hard to sort out your emotions related to a miscarriage, especially if you weren't trying and didn't expect to get pregnant. If you find yourself not recovering emotionally or are thinking about the miscarriage all the time, you might ask your doctor to recommend a counselor who can help you sort through your feelings.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Janette, it's not unusual for pregnant women to not always feel "pregnant." As long as you don't have any of the symptoms of miscarriage, you should be fine.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I suffered an early miscarriage about 3 weeks ago. I had just started on the Evra patch half way through my cycle (under instructions from the family planning nurse) which completely messed up the cycle. My boyfriend & I followed the instructions properly. I'd been feeling sick for a week before we went on holiday on 5th Feb. I was due on my period that day and I thought it was all side effects of the patch. I had a bit of spotting which i thought was just my confused body. Yet when i had my patch free week, I miscarried. it was a small grey coloured sac about the size of a 50p if not a little bigger. I put it in a sandwich bag and saw a doc 2 days later who confirmed it. I was devestated and still am upset about it. We hadnt been trying and I didnt even know I was pregnant but it still hurts so bad!

-- Contributed by: Aimee

I am only a few weeks pregnant, but for some reason today I don't feel pregnant at all, where the last several weeks I have. Could this mean that I may have miscarried? I haven't seen any other symptoms.

-- Contributed by: janette

Sheliea, although you can have some cramping after a pelvic exam, it shouldn't last very long, maybe just a few hours. The negative tests make me think you are not pregnant. It's not unusual to take a few months for your period to regulate after being on the pill.

I think everything you are experiencing is related to your period, which you will probably get in the next few days.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have irregular periods since coming off the pill last August. Since then I've had four periods, the last one being Jan 3rd, lasting the usual 4-5 day time frame. I recently went to the doc, who is doing blood work(results not back yet) She is testing for pregnancy. However, since Feb. 6th I've taken numerous hpt(all negative)plus the few times I had intercourse with my husband we used condoms(didn't slip off and nothing leaked or spilled out) I have no signs and symptoms of pregnancy other than the late period. Since my pap and pelvic exam Wed.Feb 13th I've been experiencing cramps, pulling twisting feeling and low back pain on my right side only. At this point I have no idea what's going but that the pain I've been having has been going on since my doctor did the exam. Should there be four days of pain after having a pap and pelvic? Any advice you got would be great. Thanks

-- Contributed by: sheliea

B, you should call your doctor. It's not unusual for a woman to pass clots sometimes, but since this isn't normal for you and it's not time for your period, your doctor might want to see you. I don't think you are having amiscarriage, though, because you wouldn't have this much bleeding from a miscarriage that was only 2 weeks along.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i had my regular period last month and now about a week and a half before my next period should arrive I'm heavily bleeding and i'm passing a lot of blood clots.. i've never experienced anything like this. I had a papsmear and in internal exam of my ovvaries the other morning and this bleeding started later that night... could the two be connected? Might i have been pregant and miscarried very early?

-- Contributed by: B

Bianca, did you get a positive result on a home pregnancy test or have a doctor tell you you were pregnant? It doesn't sound to me like you were pregnant. You seem to be having irregular periods and midcycle bleeding or spotting, which could be confused for some of the early signs of pregnancy. Y

If you haven't already done so, you should contact your doctor about why your cycle is so irregular and to get tested to see if you are pregnant.

I thought I was pregnant two months ago. My period was late the first month and on time for the second month. I recently had my period two weeks ago. The past two days I have been experience discharge, the color of old blood, and have been experience symptoms comparable to my period. Could I be experiencing a miscarriage? What is the time frame of a miscarriage?

Ashley,

please go to a local hospital or your on-campus medical clinic right away. I don't think you are having a miscarriage, but you may be having another medical problem. Please seek a doctor immediately.

I am a freshman in college and I think that I may be experiencing a miscarriage. I'm so confused. It was about 3 weeks ago since i had sex, and just last weekend i had my period. My period always starts the same time b/c I am on birth control. So I got off my period on Sunday, then that Wednesday I started spotting and experiencing extremely bad pains. As time went on the flow kept getting thicker, darker, and there are what look like black clumps. Also the pain was almost unbearable, it was it my pelvic region and exrreme cramps in the front and the back.. This all just seems a little weird to me because I dont think Im pregnent.. or i didnt.

I have just experienced an early miscarriage. I already have two healthy little ones and am only 25. I was shocked and devastated to hear about my loss and want answers. I have no explanation as to why this happened, but I am thankful, after reading about the possibilities, that this might not have been a healthy baby after all, and God laid this one to rest before enduring any pain it may have suffered.
