Nicolle,

I don't know what the two lines meant. The digital test gets its results from the stick, but I don't know how it reads it or what it means. If you doubt the results of the test, you should take another one or see your doctor.

i had a ept digital and it come out negative i took the sitick out nd it had 2 lins what does that mean

Layla,

I have taken three pregnancy tests only to see a blank screen. I went back to the pharmacy and they refused to take the tests back. i am so furious right now. you need to give me my money back or send me a good coupon now. i cant keep spending money on tests that arent even working.

-- Contributed by: Layla

I'm infuriated that I followed the instructions to the letter, and at the end, I received not so much as a reason why it failed...just a blank screen. What terrible quality!

Judit,

we are an information-only site and do not make or sell any pregnancy tests. I tried looking at the EPT website to find an email address for you to use as a contact, but they only list their 1-800 number. You might be able to return the test to the store you bought it at. I wish I could offer more help than that.

Im a 40 years old woman, who desperately tries to get pregnant. After 12 years of marriage and many unsuccessful experiences, Im receiving hormone treatment. To get a result of the expected pregnancy, I used your product. Unfortunately, even though I followed the instruction the ept certainty pregnancy test fell to provide any kind of result. I used the ept certainty 1 step digital pregnancy test. According to the instruction; if the display remain blank, I should call a 1-800 number. Im a military spouse and we are living in over seas. To call a 1-800 number to US would be an international charge for us. After paying the price for your defect product I would not want to waste any more money to make an international call. I just wanted to let you know how disappointed Im of the quality of your product.

Enter, the hour glass usually appears for a few minutes before you get your result, but it sounds like your test was invalid for some reason. If you have good reason to think that you are pregnant, you should try taking another pregnancy test. To save money, you might want to use a different, non-digital test, which you can usually get for about $4.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

mine didnt work. it flashed the hr glass for a couple minutes, then went blank. nothing. now im not sure to go get another one and waist money or not.

Stacey, did they give you a Blood-based Pregnancy Test at the resource center? Most home pregnancy tests, like the ones you took, are only reliable as of the first day of your missed period, so although you may have been testing too soon, it's odd that you got so many positive test results. Are you taking fertility medication that could have caused Pregnancy Test False Positives? Once your period is late, try testing again

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have taken a total of 6 pregnancy test. the first 2 was the generic first response test, both came back positive, the second 2 where the actual first response test, both came back positive, the 5th one was the ept strip stick, i think that came back positive. the blue line was very faint. then i took the digital test and it said pregnant. so i went to the pregnancy resorce center and they said i wasnt pregnant. i am not suppose to start my period until tomorrow but with all those positive test results i am a little confused.

-- Contributed by: Stacey

This was the test that worked for me with my pregnancy! You just have to be able to put it together right!! (I had this problem once!) Now over a year later, the result of that test is running around and getting into everything!! My beautiful Daughter!!

-- Contributed by: BriannaJ

If you want to know if you're pregnant, don't use the ept certainty test. The first one had the blinking hourglass for a few minutes and then just went blank - no result. The next morning I performed the second test. The hourglass blinked for only 20 seconds, then I too got the picture of the book! What a waste of money and time, not to mention the extended time of not knowing!

-- Contributed by: Carrie

Do not waste your money on the new EPT Certainty test! I tried 3 of them and everytime it came back with a picture of a book on it which says that I did something wrong even though I followed the exact directions not a negative or a positive which was a complete waste of 20 plus dollars.

Nicole, I can't say for sure how long it takes for hormones in urine to break down, but yes, you should use fresh urine. Urine that has been sitting for a few minutes is probably fine, but 3 hours is too long. Take another pregnancy test using the urine right away.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Is it important to use fresh urine? I am almost certain I am pregnant but I collected urine in a cup first thing this morning and set it aside. About 3 hours later I used the urine to take the test and it showed negative. Could it be because it had set for awhile?

-- Contributed by: Nicole

Samantha, pregnancy tests should only be used once so you can't go by any test results you've had after using the same test twice. You will need to test again using a different test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took the test early this morning. At first I urinated, but I did have a lot of urine, causing the stick to be a little damp.I noticed a horizontal line appeared in the circle( the first section on the test). Then, I waited approximately 10-15 minutes and tried it again, using the same test and automatically the first box appeared as a plus and the second box showed a negative sign. What does that mean?????

-- Contributed by: Samantha

Elizabeth, it sounds like the test played a trick on you with the flashing! How frustrating. The results should have appeared after about 3 minutes and should have been displayed as either "pregnant" or "not pregnant." Since your results are inclusive, you'll need to take another pregnancy test. Good luck.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

took a digital ept test and it processed for a minute then flashed not pregnant and pregnant back and forth. So Im confused I took out the test strip to see if maybe my answer was lying in there. It has one really dark line and one very faint line. What is my result pregnant or not? I am very confused!!!

-- Contributed by: Elizabeth

Cristy, if you have been having positive pregnancy test results for two days, you are probably pregnant. Contact your doctor, who will administer a Blood-based Pregnancy Test to confirm your pregnancy.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I TOOK THE EPT CERTAINTY TEST AND GOT A NEGATIVE RESULT, AND WITH THE REGULAR EPT I GOT A POSTIVE, I HAVE TESTED POSITVE FOR 2 DAYS WITH THE REG TESTS AND THE LINES HAVE GOTTEN DARKER WITH EACH TEST, BUT IT TOOK UP 10-15 MINS FOR THE LINE TO APPEAR, BUT IT IS DEFAINATLY THERE, BUT I HAVE A NEG DIGITAL TEST, SUPER CONFUSED, PLEASE HELP

-- Contributed by: CRISTY

If you see a plus sign "+" in the round part and a line "-" in the second that is a POSITIVE result.

-- Contributed by: Renee

Jaime and What is...,

the EPT pregnancy test shows a plus sign if you are pregnant. If you don't see a plus sign, you're getting a negative result on the test.

If you have reason to doubt the results, you might try taking another pregnancy test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took a pregnancy test and don't have the instructions. There are 2 windows. One has one blue line and the other shows 2 blue lines going in the opposite direction. Is that a positive or a negative? It seems all of the negative responses have only one line so now I am confused. Help!!! Thanks

-- Contributed by: jaime

I just bought an ept test, but my husbandust threw the box away..I have one straight line and the sec one one line going up..can you please ell me what is that..thank you

-- Contributed by: what is the sign for if Im pregnant

Chloe, there are a lot of things that could happen to cause either a false negatives or false positive. If you took the second test shortly after the first one, the HCG in your urine may not have been strong enough to register.

Unfortunately, you'll need to take another or see your doctor for a tie breaker.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME. I HAD A DIGITAL ONE THAT SAID YES, THEN I TOOK ANOTHER ONE AND IT SAID NO. THEY WERE OUT OF THE SAME BOX TOO. Which one do i need to use that is most accurate? I got so excited and thought i was pregnant then i took another just to make sure and it was a negative!

-- Contributed by: CHLOE

Bonnie, there are several reasons this could have happened. The first test may have been able to detect HCG earlier than the second test, meaning that the second isn't sensitive enough if you are testing early.

One of the tests may have been wrong, giving you either a false positive on the first one or a false negative on the second.

Or, you might have been pregnant two days ago, but miscarried since then, though you would probably have started bleeding by now. In any case, you'll need to take at least one more test to break the tie and give you an accurate result.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Becky,

it probably means that there was an error on the test. You will need to take another pregnancy test to get an accurate result.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took an EPT digital pregnancy test two days ago and it indicated pregnant. I took one this morning that is not the digital and it indicated negative. Why would that be? they are both from the same box and just recently purchased.

-- Contributed by: Bonnie

I had taken the digital ept test and it said see pamphlet; but I have lost my mamphlet. What does that mean??

-- Contributed by: Becky

Serena, if it's not a line, it's negative. You might be seeing imperfections in the material or evaporation lines if you noticed them more than 10 minutes after taking the test.

If you doubt those results, you can take another pregnancy test for additional results.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

The test appears to be negative, but there are 3 dots that turned blue wherein the positive line would be. EPT has blue perferated markings, so, a couple of those turned...you can barely see um, but they are there....how do I interpret that?

-- Contributed by: serena

Landi, if you are pregnant, you should have a plus sign on the round window. If the square window is displaying something other than a straight line, you should retest as this one might have been defective.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

If the test is positive in the round, negative in the square, what would that mean?

-- Contributed by: Landi

Starr, a faint line means you are pregnant, no matter how faint. It's possible that you took the test early and didn't get a strong enough result. If you doubt the test, take another or call your doctor for a Blood-based Pregnancy Test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took the ept test and it shows a very faint positive result. Could this be a mistake or is it more likely that I am really pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Starr

Meg, if you are pregnant, you should have a plus sign in the first window (the round one). If you're not pregnant, it will have a horizontal line, like minus sign.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took an ept this morning and seem to have misplace my instuctions so I was wondering if you could tell me what exatly the lines are supposed to for positive and negative. That would be very appreciated and hopefully as soon as you posibly could. Thanks.

-- Contributed by: Meg

Kelly,

it sounds like you have a negative pregnancy test. The minus in the first window is the result. Had you been pregnant, it would have shown a plus sign.

But since the other window had unusual results, you should wait a few days and take another pregnancy test

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Sandy, the open book and arrow means there was a malfunction with the test. There was a section in the instructions that would tell you what probably went wrong. Since you don't have them, you might find the EPT instruction guide on their website.

And, of course, you'll need to take another pregnancy test

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I used the digital EPT & in the window showed what looked like an open book with an arrow pointing towards it. What does that mean.....Unfortunately I already threw away the instructions:(

-- Contributed by: Sandy

i took a ept pregnacy test and in the first window there is a - and the second window there is a / is it possitive or neg

-- Contributed by: kelly

Holly,

I called on Tuesday and they scheduled my appt. for the 29th. She said he would want to see me then. I told her that I had a positive test.

-- Contributed by: Kathy

Kathy,

Pregnancy Test False Positives are pretty rare, but they can occur if someone is taking certain medications. It sounds like in your case, you are pregnant. Congrats! If you doubt the results, you should take another test.

Don't wait for your appt in two weeks, your doctor will probably want to do a Blood-based Pregnancy Test now.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Just curious; If you are not on any medications, no recent pregnancy, and followed the instructions, Is a positive result pretty certain with the E.P.T Certainty?

I took the test last night and received a positive result. Should I wait until my appt. in 2 weeks or test again?

-- Contributed by: Kathy

Dana, does the test you have look like the image above? IF so, you would have a plus sign in the indicator window if you are pregnant. If you doubt the results, take another test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have the ept test and i lost the directions so i don know how to read it... window one has a negative and the 2nd one is postitive

-- Contributed by: dana

Tiffany, the test may appear positive later as a result of the stick drying out and a line appearing. So, according to this test you are not pregnant. But if you doubt the results, test again.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have the same problem and i took my test 3-24-08 and i got a positive sign 20 min later...just took another one and its negative. i dont know what to think? am i pregnant or not? if is negative it should stay negative..not show up later as positive. ive never had this problem with any other test ever!

-- Contributed by: tiffany

Nikki, the reading on the pregnancy test after a 15 minute time period would be considered invalid. I had the same problem. I took an ept +/- and got a negative, then it turned positive 2 hours later. All my other test were negative and I got my period the next day. You my have just gotten an evaporation line like I did.

-- Contributed by: AnnaB.

I took a test on 3-18-08. It did not resgister. I have 3 children all ready and I think that this was a waste of my money. It was at least 15.00 and I did not find out if I was pregnant or not. I think that I know how to use the stick cause I have had to use the same test the past 3 times. (last few babies I have had) I thought that I would let you know how I feel. I could have used the money in better use or bought another brand. Thanks

-- Contributed by: Wendy

Nikki, pregnancy tests should be read soon after taking it, usually about 3-5 minutes later. A test that is negative at first but seems to "turn" positive later is usually still a negative. If you are concerned about the results, you should take another pregnancy test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

If i took a pregnancy, it read negative then threw away then 10 hours pass,i look at the test in the garbage and it says positive am i pregnant?

-- Contributed by: nikki

Jennifer, almost anytime there is a positive test result on a pregnancy test it means you're pregnant. Pregnancy Test False Positives are pretty rare, but they can occur. It's possible there was a problem with the EPT test or that maybe enough urine didn't get on it.

You should take another test, preferably a different brand from either of these. Or, you can contact your doctor for a Blood-based Pregnancy Test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took an EPT Certainty test with yesterdays first morning urine and it came back "pregnant" and I took an EPT plus and minus with first morning urine this morning and its negative? The plus and minus detects as low as 25 and the certainty as low as 50. I am confused since the one that detects higher amounts came back positive.

-- Contributed by: Jennifer

Mercy, you're right. These tests are lightyears ahead of the ones I took just 5 years ago. According to a PDF on the website, the book means an error occurred during testing. Usually this indicates that the tip was not kept pointing downward or it was not laid flat. A problem could also occur if too much or too little urine was used.

But my advice to Shelia stays the same: take another test but be very careful that you are following the directions exactly as they are written.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

The book and arrow symbol does not mean the test was defective. It means that the instructions were not followed properly, i.e. too much or too little urine, or the test was not kept flat while testing. Testing again (either with a test from the same or a different box) won't do any good unless you follow the directions carefully.

-- Contributed by: Mercy

Shelia, it means you had an inaccurate test. It must have been defective before you got it. Try taking another pregnancy test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i took a e.p.t certainty test , and the results were a arrow pointed to a book, what does this mean?

-- Contributed by: shelia waag

Deb,

I believe the horizontal line is a "minus", indicating that you are not pregnant. If you think you may have gotten a false negative, try taking another test or using a different brand of test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

okay so i took this test and theres two seperate areas and in one area the line was vertical and in the other area it looked horizontal..what does this mean am i pregnant or not.

please help, thanks, deb

Sondra,

If you got the store-brand pregnancy test from Walmart, it's called Equate. In that test, you would get a plus sign or minus sign to show if you are pregnant.

In most other tests that use 2 lines, the double line menas you are pregnant. You will need to take another test, though, to know for sure.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hey so yeah if any of you know the answer to that test can you please send it to me.. im worried but i took 2 of the same test and i had previously lost the instructions but both tests came out with 2 lines. Does that mean i am pregnant or im not? Well let me know thank you dearly sondra

-- Contributed by: Sondra

Okay so i took this test from walmart and lost the instructions well ne way it was one of those 2 lines vs one line tests well my test had 2 lines so what does that mean?

-- Contributed by: Sondra

Stephanie,

as someone who has had this happen, I can tell you what my doctor told me when I called. I was actually two months late. She said that it was probably just stress-related (I was going through a lot, but worrying about a late period adds to it so it's somewhat self-fulfilling). They weren't really concerned and said that if the home pregnancy tests were negative, that was good enough for them.

So, yes, take another test and if it's still negative you'll probably just have to wait it out. I've heard that in some cases, a doctor might give you something to bring on your period, but I think that's pretty rare.

If you aren't try to conceive, you might to go on the pill, which will keep you regular and take the guess work out of everything.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i recently took an ept test and it showed up negative but i'm still late. over a week late and my period is never late. what should i do? you say to wait and take another one but what if it turns out negative and i still haven't started?

-- Contributed by: stephanie

I am a nurse and it is true that if you are very early in your pregnancy the hormones are not high enough to change it in just a few minutes. The hormones in the urine can slowly change the strip. It shouldn't change at all unless you have some of the hormone in your urine. Keep in mind that there are things other than pregnancy that can cause an increased HCG. I recomend taking another test in a few days to confirm that you are really pregnant and see your doctor as soon as possible.

-- Contributed by: Jennifer

Hi Corrine,

the initial reading you got is the one you should go with. If you had HCG in your body, it would have resulted in a positive pregnancy test within a few minutes, not 20 minutes later.

I can't really say why the test showed positive later. If you're unsure of the results, take another test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

okay my test came back negative at first but after like 20 minutes it said positive, will that make the sign show up if its there for too long. or is it not supposed to show up at all if you aren't pregnant? My mom said it took longer because I am not that far along and it was taking longer to read the hormones is that true?

-- Contributed by: Corrine

Tina, have you seen a doctor yet? Your doc should be able to estimate a due date based on how far along your pregnancy is. In the meantime, check out our article about due dates.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Ok its confirmed I am officially pregnant but now the next question how do u calculate the due date?

-- Contributed by: Tina

Hi again Tina, congrats on your pregnancy! Good luck!

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Call me crazy but i took your advice before I read it. I took 6. 1st came out negative and the rest came out positive. I tried ept regular the 1st time it was negative. the other 2 were also ept and came out positive. the next 2 were first response....even though I have friends who trust ept I still played it safe and those both came out positive. last 1 was ept digital and it also came out positive. so I was happy. I am going to the doctors tomorrow or today and will get it put on record. thanks

-- Contributed by: Tinae

Hi Tina, a pregnancy test false positive is a unusual, they are more likely to give a false negative, but that's no consulation when you are one of the rare ones.

Hopefully the test you recently took is from a different box than the one you took a few months ago. Perhaps that other test had something wrong with it.

You could always take some other home tests to see if you still get positives, but you should call your doctor to get tested in the office and begin prenatal care. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I had a digital pregnancy test come out positive and it was actually negative...that was my first ever positive. that was over a few months ago. well this month, a few days ago I had another pregnancy test come out positive and for the first time I am scared to find out if it is negative. I believe this is the real thing but I dont want to go to the hospital and get turned down saying its negative. whats the chance of 2 negatives to happen when they have both shown positive?

-- Contributed by: Tina

Tiffany, after you reach a certain point in a pregnancy, the hCG levels do begin to drop off, though usually not until the very end. I'm not sure why the tests you took in 2005 were negative for so long.

You don't mention how late your period is, but it's possible that your cycle is just late or that you have an early pregnancy. Try using a different home pregnancy test to see if you get different results.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took three of these test in 2005 and they all came up negative on the fourth one it was positive. I went to the doctor and in deed I was almost 3 months pregnant. Now I have run into the same problem. I have taken three and all are negative and still haven't had my period what do I do?

-- Contributed by: Tiffany

Alecia, it's possible that the first test was more sensitve than the second and that you are pregnant. It's also possible that one of the tests was an error or that your urine may have been too diluted with the second pregnancy test to register a positive.

You'll need to take a third test, I'd recommend using a different brand from the first two. Or give your OB/GYN a call.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

So i took the certainty test and it came up pregnant, then i took another test with a different brand and it said negative, which one is true?

-- Contributed by: Alecia

I don't know either, Shaela. Sounds like you got a bogus test, I've never heard of a book showing up. Try again with another one, preferably from a different box thatn the one you already took.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

on my test a book with an arrow pot up and i dont no what that means

Chelsea, some of the most common signs of labor are cramps in your abdomen, a mucous discharge, or fluid leaking, indicating that your water has broken.

For more signs, check out our articles about Labor Symptoms and Pregnancy Labor Signs.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

How will i know when im in labor?

-- Contributed by: Chelsea

Hi Rosanna, how frustrating! There are a few things that can throw off the results of the test, like drinking a lot of liquid that dilutes your urine, taking certain fertility drugs, or being pregnant recently. It might also be that the amount of HCG in your urine is still very low and is not appearing consistently in high enough levels to make the test positive.

Although waiting can be tough, the directions suggest that you wait 3 days and take another test. You could also give your doctor a call and see what they suggest, but my experience is that they defer to the home test results and will want you to test again anyway.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi - I have a concerning question that I am hoping you can answer for me. I took a EPT Certainty digial home test (after 1 week that my period was late) and it indicated I was PREGNANT. Did the second test 6 hours later and it indicated I was NOT PREGNANT. I followed the instructions, etc. so I am very confused. Please help!

-- Contributed by: Rosanna

Hi Lauren, it's hard to wait the suggested time limit on a pregnancy test. Whenever I've taken them, I watch it the whole time so I see a result as soon as it appears.

In your case, it's possible that the line showed up after 2 minutes. A faint line may indicate that it's still early in a pregnancy or it may have faded a bit during the night. But, I've also read that the line can show up over time if you wait too long to read it. You might be pregnant, but there's no way to know for sure without taking another test. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have a question i took a pregnancy test i know that you are supposed to wait a couple of minutes so you can get a acurate reading well i waited maybe a secound saw the negative sign and set it on the counter i woke up in the morning and there was a very faint line to make a plus sign does this mean that i'm pregnante??
