Enter, that symbol means that the test is invalid for some reason. As you probably already know, you'll need to follow up with another home pregnancy test, but you might want to just buy a less expensive brand and style that has a clearer readout.

i took the test and then a book with an arrow pointed to it came on the screen...did not tell me if i was prego or not....waste of money

Ashley, I don't know either. I also opened a non-digital test once and saw the same thing. I suspect that it's either an odor-absorber or something to prevent moisture from getting out of the test.

What is the little tablet inside a digital pregnancy test? I took it apart to see how it works and I was shocked to find a little pill.

Ihet, it sounds like you probably saw an evaporation line. These can appear after time passes and the line, which was originally negative, starts to turn a slight color. If you think you could be pregnant, take another test. In the meantime, check out our Evaporation Line on Pregnancy Test article.

is it normal that when it shows negative in the result it will change the result to positive sign after sometime? because I tested in the night & when I saw that it's negative I didn't even wait for 10 mins for the result, i just kept it in my bag, the following morning when I showed it to my husband & told him that it's negative, when he looked at it it was positive....

I got a false positive using Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test. I bought a pack of Clearblue tests that included a free Easy Digital Clearblue. At random I picked one of the tests and got the digital stick, followed the instructions and got a 'Pregnant' result. To be sure I did a second test, this time with a stick of the regular non-digital test (that came in the same package), but got a 'Not Pregnant' result. I thought that maybe it was because it was the second sample or too early in the pregnancy stage, etc. For a 'third opinion' I went to the lab and did a blood test. The blood test result was negative; hence I do not recommend this digital test. With false positives if you want to get pregnant you will be disappointed once you find out the truth, and if you do not want to get pregnant you will not appreciate this prank.

i did a clearblue test and first it came up negative, i put the test to one side and about 15 mins later check it and a cross had appeared, i am only two days passed my af, i believe it takes a while to appear but hang in there and double check before throwing it away

Help,

did you take the test strip out of the plastic case? If you did, you should only go by what appears in the result window. If it was negative, it's still negative regardless of what you see when you take it out of the case.

But, anytime you doubt the results or have a hard time reading the test, you should always take another one.

when taking the test strip out if its negative how many blue lines should be on there. Mine said negative but there was a dark blue line and also a real light blue line. If anyone knows please help

Michelle, that book symbol means that there was something wrong with the test and that you will need to take another pregnancy test. The error might have been caused by not having enough urine on the test or having too much. In either case, you'll need to try again.

My test shows what looks like a little book with the arrow pointing towards it in the right hand corner. What does that mean?

-- Contributed by: Michelle

Stephanie, you'll need to retest. I don't know if the test was invalid or if you just had a false reading, but the only way to find out is to take another test and try again. Or, you could contact your doctor for a Blood-based Pregnancy Test.

i took the test and there was a the first line wich indicates that its working but the second line wasnt positive ornegative it was straightup and down what does that mean?

-- Contributed by: stephanie

Valerie, the Clear Blue test should display a plus or a minus, unlike some tests that show one or two lines. Are you seeing part of a plus line?

It's possible that you are seeing an evaporation line or a faint positive indicator. In any case, the only thing I can recommend is to take another test. If you are testing too early, you may get a darker line after waiting a few days.

Ok, I took Two of clear blue easy hpt's. One had a faint line after 3 minutes. The next morning I took another and the line came up Right away but still Very faint. It doesn't look very blue. Is this an evap line?

-- Contributed by: Valerie

Angel, you'll need to take another test to know for sure. After a pregnancy test sits for a while, an evaporation line form, giving you what looks like a positive result. Check out our Faint Line on Pregnancy Test article to learn more about why this happens.

hi i took a pregnancy test 3days after i missed my date of priod the first 3mins i got only one line so it means negative but i kept it inside my cabinet the day after when i checked it i see two line already but the other one is faded is it posible that im pregnant?

MDGirl, while watching the test for results, you will often see the urine move up the stick. Since you got a positive result pretty quickly on both tests, you are pregnant. Congratulations! Next, you should plan a visit with your OB/Gyn for a Blood-based Pregnancy Test

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

my test appeared to have my urine go through both windows of the test. i did not have to wait 2 minutes for my results, it was like 15-20 seconds. i took a test twice and it happened to both sticks. not sure if i took the test accurately.

-- Contributed by: mdgirl

What if, you will also need to retest. You should get either a plus or a minus, not both, so your test will need to be redone using another HPT.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Gigi, you will need to take another test. Even though you saw two lines, which usually indicate a positive result on most tests, we can't be sure what the lines indicate since you didn't get the result in the display window.

what if you get to sign

-- Contributed by: WHAT IF YOU GET A -AND+ SIGN

i took a digital hpt today the hr glass indication thatthe testwas working but after that when time 2 get results was blank wich indicates a error if i took it apart and saw 2 blue lines would that mean a positive or a neg 1 line was light the other was dark

-- Contributed by: gigi

Sarah, if you haven't already, you should take another pregnancy test. Four days before your period is due is too early to get accurate test results so you may be pregnant after all.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i took one test- neg 2day ago, then another the next day neg again. took the test apart after reading others comments. first had just one line, second had two lines. have read this is irrelevent but did take 4days early so could be wrong>i will be using cheaper brand next time

-- Contributed by: sarah

Gaetanne, whenever you have a faint line on a pregnancy test, I recommend that you take another test. The positive line you saw may have been an evaporation line or you might have been able to see where the line appears.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I took a pregnancy test amd the negative line was really dark blue but the positive line was really hard to see but i could see it anyway does this mean i am pregnant ?

-- Contributed by: Gaetanne

Wnedy, the Clear Blue pregnancy test displays a plus sign if you are pregnant and a minus sign if you are not. If you see a plus, even if it's faint, it means you are pregnant. But you should probably take another test to be sure.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I just took the test and I'm not sure of the result. I haven't taken these many time but it still confuses me. There seems to be a very faint line to make a plus. If it were negative would show even a faint line?

-- Contributed by: Wendy Moncrief

Crystal, four days after potentially conceiving should be too early to get an accurate result, but it might be possible. Fertility drugs that contain HCG, like Pregnyl, could give a false positive. That doesn't mean you're not pregnant, but you won't be able to solely rely on a pregnancy test to give you an accurate result.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I TOOK 2 PREGNANCY TESTS AND BOTH WERE POSSITIVE BUT IT HAS ONLY BEEN 4 DAYS SINCE I WAS ARTIFICIALLY INCEMINATED. I ALSO TOOK A FERTILITY DRUG. COULD THIS READING BE TRUE?

-- Contributed by: CRYSTAL

Olivia,

you will need to take another test to get an accurate result. Sounds like your first test wasn't valid if you didn't get a full result.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

when i took the test it show up as half pregant and half not lol not a good sign :-(

-- Contributed by: Olivia

Jeannine,

the arrow and booklet indicates that there was a malfunction with the test. You will need to take another pregnancy test to get accurate results.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Lakell, there should be an instruction sheet that shows you a negative result and compares it to a positive result, but a negative test should show horizontal line, like a minus sign.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i just took the pregmacy test and it has an arrow with a booklet i threw away the little booklet so what does that mean thanks

-- Contributed by: jeannine

The test that I have has one solid line first and a second faint line second. I read above and it said that this was a positive result, What would a negative result look like?

-- Contributed by: Lakell

Veronica, the diamond shape hole is the control, so your results don't show up there. The plus in the first window means you are pregnant. Congrats!

If you doubt the results or are unsure if the display is accurate, please take another test to be sure.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Tiffany,

both tests are reliable, so it might depend on when you took them. If you took them both on the same day and followed the directions exactly, you'll need to take a third test as a tie-breaker.

If you took the regular test a day or two earlier, you might have tested too early for a positive result to show up. In this case, the digital test should be the accurate one.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I'm unsure of the results of my test, it has the blurry plus on the first one but the second diamond shape hole is vertical. Does this mean I'm pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Veronica

I have taken the digital and the regular test. the digital showed up pregnant but the other didn't. What should I do?

-- Contributed by: Tiffany

Charles,

this is a pretty common question. Check out our Pregnancy FAQs section: My home pregnancy test says I’m not pregnant. Could it be wrong? for more information. That should answer your question, but if not, let us know.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

My wife was spotting for 4 days and she keeps taking pregancy test, but they keep coming up negative! Could she be pregnant??

-- Contributed by: charles

Hi Bethanie, you're right. The control window shows a vertical line while the results window shows a horizontal line or minus sing to show "not pregnant" and a plus sign to show pregnant. I've changed the article.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

In the fourth paragraph you say that the control line and the result line needs to run in the same direction. It does not. In fact, it shows in the instructions that they run in a different direction.
