Enter,

your doctor may be able to write a letter to your insurance company saying that you tried the IUD and it was ineffective. That might help getting something else approved. In the meantime, your doctor likely has some sample of the birth control pill that he can give you to get you started. If you are having complications with the IUD, you should definitely have it take it out. There's no point in keeping it in if it's not effective.

I got Mirena about 18 mths ago and i hate it, i used to have a regular cycle but now i never know when i'm gonna bleed, i also keep having hotflashes and they said that that means it's working really well. I'm ready to get it removed but don't know if my insurance will cover an alternative form of birth control since it's been nowhere near 5 yrs.

I have two children 2 and 6 months and just found out that I am pregnant with my 3rd I have the coper one. DONT GET THE COPPER!

I have had my Mirena for close to 3 years now and love it!! It felt no worse being inserted than your typical pelvic exam or pap smear, just made me spot and be crampy for about 3 days afterwards. Sex hasnt been an issue, it doesnt bother my fiancee. I have had a child, so I assume that makes it easier. I will get another one when this one has to be removed. Its so nice to be able to go years and not worry with birth control11

I had my IUD placed when my DD was 8 weeks old, she is 10 this year and I have had no troubles at all with it. I will be relpacing this IUD with a new one for another ten years of baby free life. It has made my hard painful periods less painful, and made it so that my husband and I can enjoy each other company more often.

I also had the Mirena IUD and LOVED it!! I have a 2 12 year old and just decided to have it removed. No periods to speak of and low pain with removal, i do agree that sex for the man can be tricky I told my ob and she trimed it and everything was great after that!. I will get it after the next baby!

I had mirena put in almost 2 years ago. It has been a wonderful means of birth control for me. The only complaint I have had with it is the occational pain durning sex. Its only when in certain positions. Other than that, it stopped my periods completley so even that has been nice! I would recomend it to anyone :)

i have had an iud inserted for four years now, its been great and i've been worry free but very heavy periods have been my experience with it. Lately, i started using tampons which i never used to use and i have experienced a lot of pain especially if i do not have sex leading to my period. i am ready to take it out anyway since i am planning on getting pregnant again.

I had a copper IUD inserted 5 days ago. It was the most horrible thing I have ever gone through. Apparently it's easier if you've had a child via vaginal delivery, which I have not. And the first one came out as she was trying to clip the strings, and I had to do it all over again. As I said, it's 5 days later, and I feel great. The cramping stopped by the next day, and my period has been totally normal (I was on my period to get it, which supposedly helps by relaxing your cervix if you haven't had a child). It was horrible, but I'd do it again. It's totally worth it, and the pain is already a distant memory.

I had Mirena put in about a year ago, the insertion was not bad at all, and I'm not good with pain. However I did have severe cramps for a few days following. I still feel it was worth it! it's safe to use while nursing, which most other means of birth control aren't, and it's worry free for up to 5 yrs... I highly recomend it!

Margaret- I just had one put in about 2 months ago. The actual insertion doesn't hurt, but it does cause the uterus to cramp. It'll feel like a period cramp. The IUD itself doesn't hurt. They have to measure the size of your uterus with a utensil that way they know how far to insert the IUD. That causes a cramp and then another one when they put it in.

Margaret, many women experience some cramping when the IUD is placed and there may be some vaginal discomfort, like what you experience during a pelvic exam. The discomfort though should be minor and easy treated with over-the-counter pain medications.

Ok, sounds great but does it hurt to have it inserted?
