Hey Erin, DO NOT panic. The exact same thing happened to me and I was so overcome with worry that I didn't sleep for 2 whole days until it came. I've had times where it has taken 3 days. As long as you haven't missed your pills etc. you will be fine.

-- Contributed by: Jean

Evergreen,

it can take a few days after you start the reminder pills until your period starts. In fact, I've sometimes not started until around day 3-4. Since your period is due, you could take a home pregnancy test to ease your mind. There is a slight chance that you could have conceived since you may have missed that pill.

Erin

hi im 20 years old and im jut finnishing my 2nd pack of Aviane. Im on my first day of my reminder pills and no period or symptoms of my period yet. Im a little concerned because last month i started my period as soon as i starded my reminder pills. Iv read some of the comments and it looks like this might be normal. The only thing that has me worried is that a few weeks ago i went to a party and unfortunatly drank too much and was sick to my stomach that night AFTER i had taken my pill....so im not sure if that one was effective or not. Should i be concerned?? how long should i wait before i take a pregnancy test?

-- Contributed by: evergreen

Michelle, I don't think Aviane is a typical low dose birth control pill since it contains both estrogen and progesterone. The same side effects for most birth control pills also apply to Aviane, so it's important to stay informed about the side effects and recognize their symptoms.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Using Aviane, the chances of blood clots and varicose veins is lower right?. . . Aviane contains a lower dosage of what compared to other birth control pills?

-- Contributed by: Michelle

Beth,

some women do experience shorter and lighter periods on Aviane, so this may just be a regular side effect for you. If you're concerned, you should contact your doctor or bring it up at your next appointment. If you were pregnant, you likely wouldn't be experiencing bleeding during the time your period is due. Although some bleeding is common in pregnancy, there isn't a cyclic pattern to them.

I an wondering if I should be worried that since I started Aviane 3 months ago my period has gone from heavy for 4-5 days, to light for about two days mainly spotting. I would be thankful for this but I am a little worried I might be pregnant as it was just about the same when I was pregnant with my son. The simple thing would be to go and get a hpt but they dont work for me for some reason I am really just wondering what the chances are and weather it could just be a positive side effect from the pills.

Cat, the pills work over the course of a month to prevent you from ovulating, so you are not likely to conceive during the inactive pills as long as you have been taking the regularly and aren't taking any medication that would decrease their effectiveness. But, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the fact that you're getting your period earlier than when you are on the inactive pills.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Can you get pregnant when you have unprotected sex while taking the unactive pills? I have been getting my periods a week early but have been taking the pills mostly at the same time every night and have not missed any. I have been on aviane for almost 6 months now. I am very paranoid about this.

Angelique,

Some women can come off the pill and conceive right away while it can take longer for others. Unfortunately, there's no way to know which category you'll fall into until you start trying. It would probably be a good idea to give yourself at least a month or two without the pill before you start trying to conceive so you can watch for signs of ovulation and find out if you have a regular cycle.

Since the acne seems to be controlled by the pill, you might have polycystic ovarian syndrome, which can make it more difficult to conceive. If the acne returns once you stop the pill and you have any other symptoms, like weight gain, make sure you talk to your doctor, especially if you don't conceive in the first year of trying.

Hello, I am 19 and have been taking Aviane since i was 12 y/o because of my horrible acne and pms. Now that i am growing up and plan to have babies in the near future, not soon, but in a few yrs, i wanted to see if i needed to stop taking it while we try to convince if so for how long? The type of acne i have is all tied into my hormones so even being off of the pills for a week really effects my face. I do not know what to do,please help.

Thanks!

-- Contributed by: Angelique

Someone asked if it's "ok" to keep taking the pill in order to not get there period for a long amount of time. This isn't a good thing to do because it can increase your chances of developing ovarian cancer and cysts, since the blood in your uteral lining is not leaving your body.

Katrina,

you should only change the way you take the pill if your own doctor recommends. Typically, though, it is okay to take the pill continually to avoid a period. Most doctors recommend taking the full pack every 3-4 months so you have a period that cycle. That will help you know that you are on track and not pregnant. Your own doctor can help you plan when to take the pills and when to go back to the placebos.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi, I have a question. I am on aviane and have been for a long time now. Friends of mine went to a doctor and are also on it.Their doctor told them that after the 21 days instead of using placebo, that they could start a new pack right away, and it will keep you protected always and no period. I decided to do this, and havn't had my period in a few months, and continue to take pregnancy tests reguarly just in case. Is this okay to be taking the pills all the time, without waiting 7 days/taking placebos? PLease let me know, and if it's not okay, how can I get my cycle back on track.

-- Contributed by: katrina

Kristy, it's not uncommon for your cycle to take a few months to get back to regular after coming off the pill. Most doctors will consider testing for fertility problems after you've been trying for 6-12 months. Keep trying and contact your doctor if a few more months go by without any luck.

I started Avian birth control in September, I took it everyday up until November, then I've stopped.. And now, I've been trying to get pregnant, but it hasn't been working, is it because of the pills or..

-- Contributed by: Kristy

Sabrina, you should always use a back form of birth control during the first month of taking a pill, especially during the middle of you cycle. There is a chance that you could be pregnant, so you'll want to take a pregnancy test when your period is due. Since you have trouble taking the pill, your doctor might recommend using the patch or the Depo shot.

I just started Avian birth control, on Dec. 27th, which was the sunday after my period. i had sex without a condom many times since then, and i was spotting since the end of the second week on the pill. the spotting went on for a couple days, then stopped, then started again. i also am not very good at taking the pills at the same time every day. is there a change im pregnant? or will i get my period when the white pills start?

-- Contributed by: sabrina

Nikki, missing a pill can give you breakthrough spotting, so it may be as simple as that. On the other hand, you could be pregnant since you missed the pills.

Although your boyfriend is using the withdrawal method, it's far from reliable and still introduces a small amount of sperm into the vagina. Since your period is almost here, you should definitely take a pregnancy test on the day you expect it.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have been on aviane for about 7 months and have been having unprotected sex but my boyfriend always pulls out before he is finished but i missed my pills 3 days in 1 week and have been having small amounts of spottings of blood (red/brown) for about 4 days now and it is about 2 days before my expected period and i was wondering if it is doing this because my pills are trying to fix everything or if i am pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Nikki

Becky, during the first month on the pill, you should use another form of birth control. If you didn't, it is possible that you could be pregnant. But it can also take a few days after you start the placebos for your period to begin.

To ease your mind, it would be a good idea to take a test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Mona, as long as you are taking the pill correctly, you should be getting a period. It might be possible that you are pregnant, so you should take a pregnancy test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i've been on this method for one month and i've takin two of the placebo pills and havent started my period yet, is there a chance of pregnancy?

-- Contributed by: becky

I've been taking the pill for over 4 months now and I haven't missed any. My question is about my period, I had it for the first three months but this month there was nothing. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative, should I still be worried?

-- Contributed by: Mona

I am on my third day, 2 days of missed pills and today is almost over...Should I take the 3 pills? I just wonder if that if I take the pills and I happen to be pregnant and not know it I could harm the baby...is that possible? Also, this is the beginning of the week before my period.

-- Contributed by: Pat

Mia, yes, you could be pregnant, especially if you missed the pills and had sex in the middle of the pack. The pill usually prevents you from ovulating, which happens 14 days before your period. If that's when you missed the pill, you might have conceived. Take a pregnancy test when your period is due so you know for sure.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I missed two pills and then had unsafe sex twice, I then took the missed dosages with the regular scheduel, is there a chance of pregnancy?

-- Contributed by: Mia

Victoria, since you skipped a month of the pill, you are basically restarting them all over again, so the same suggetions apply: use a back form of birth control for at least the first two weeks of the cycle, but I recommend for the full cycle. Better safe than pregnant.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

(and i havent missed any dose)

-- Contributed by: Victoria

I took Aviane for a pack(month) and i didnt take the next pack(month) but i just started taking them again last sunday(a whole week)is it okay for me to have sex without a condom after two weeks?

-- Contributed by: Victoria

Felicia, you can start any day of the week as long as you take them consistently. We recommend using another form of birth control for the first month that you are on the pill and any time you miss a dose.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

can you start the pack any day of the week or does it have to be the sunday after. also, do you have to take 3 months of birth control pills before you can have sex without a condom?

-- Contributed by: felicia

Kayla, you can start the pack on another day, the most important thing is that you take them regularly and don't miss a dose.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

is aviane still effictive if you don't start on the first sunday after you period?

-- Contributed by: kayla

Ellen, your cycle can be affected by the pill, but as long as you are taking it correctly and didn't miss any doses, you should still be getting a regular period. Although not common, it can be possible to get pregnant while taking the pill, so you should probably take a pregnancy test. If it's negative, talk to your OB/Gyn about your symptoms.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I've been taking aviane for 3 months now. I had no side effects during the first, and half of the second month. During the second half of the second month I had major mood swings, and nausea. When I went on the placebo pills my period was only one day, when it usually was 4-5 days. When I went back on the hormone pills I had major nausea, back pain, and got a yeast infection. Is it possible that I'm pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Ellen

Melinda, since it sounds like your body is still getting used to the pills, you should use backup birth control until you know for sure that you aren't ovulating. You should also ask your pharmacist whether you should continue with the same pack or start over with the next cycle.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have been taking aviane for almost a month now and i haven't missed one day, but my period started a week before it was supposed to. so now i'm on the placebo pills and i haven't stared again. am i supposed to? i don't know what to do i'm only 16 and i can't handle getting pregnant. so i really need to know if i'm ok.

-- Contributed by: melinda

Carnaudi, if you don't take the pill consistently at the same time everyday, you could still ovulate, so yes, you could be pregnant. It's also possible, though, that your cycle is a little off because the different times.

Since you're late, you should take a pregnancy test.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have been on Aviane for 3 months now, and this past month I took it everyday, but it was never at the same time. Now I was supposed to get my period yesterday, is it possible that I could be pregnant by just screwing up times?

-- Contributed by: Carnaudi

Michelle, many people start their period on the day the placebo starts but some people start it a day or two later. If you haven't gotten your yet, don't worry it will probably come soon.

By the way, if you are using the pill to prevent pregnancy, it really should be taken at the same time everyday.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i started my first placebo pill today and was wondering if your period comes that day. i havent started my cycle and i take the pills at different times of the day... not the same time everyday. this is my first month taking aviane. any advice would help

-- Contributed by: michelle

Niki, did your physician tell you how to take the pill to stop your period? There is a certain way to take the pill, usually by not skipping the inactive pills, that should prevent your period. Most doctors recommend using Seasonale Birth Control for that purpose.

But, since you are bleeding so much, you should call your doctor. It might be a sign of a medical problem and you should be checked.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I am taking Aviane not just for birth control but to stop my period from happening and it's still not working... in fact I have been bleeding continuously instead.

-- Contributed by: Niki M

Samantha, it can take a full month for your pill to be effective enough that you can have unprotected sex without worrying. Some people will tell you to wait at least one week, but, if the pill doesn't work properly and you still ovulate, you could get pregnant two weeks after you started the pill. That's why I think you're better off waiting a month

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

hi. I was just wondering how long it takes for the birth control to be affective. like does it take a week to set in or something?

-- Contributed by: samantha

Kim, headaches and nausea are possible side effects of the pill but switching to another brand might help eliminate them. Aviane isn't a higher dose than most other pills but you might be able to take a lower-dose pill that works better for you.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have been on Aviane for 2 weeks. For the past week i have been feeling really nauseasus and having light headaches on n off. Today i had spot bleeding. Is this normal? Also is Aviane a high dosage?

-- Contributed by: Kim

I used Aviane for a month and a half now and I see nothing wrong with it. It did not make me sick, I THINK I did notice a swing on my mood while I was on my period not a serious one but I was more emotional when Im usaully not - hopefully it was just a bad week but other than that this pill did not affect my emotions towards more postive or negative. I did take Alesse for the two first weeks and they made me sick the first week where I felt like puking up and just sleeping all day - I was worried to go on the pill again, but Im glad I picked this one its a close form of "Alesse" but this one did not make me sick or feel any weird up and downs towards my emotions. Also my peiod came right on the 2nd non-active pill and stopped 1-2 before I had to start the active ones again. It doesn't mess up the cycle which I was also happy about! Anyway try it out I think it work great for me!

-- Contributed by: Carrie

Laura, since your doctor recommends getting your blood pressure checked regularly, I have to agree with him. Although getting it checked at through the blood bank is better than nothing, they don't keep record of your health to know if something has changed.

As for the bleeding after sex, it's probably not related to a miscarriage. Although women can have a miscarriage without ever realizing they were pregnant, it's unlikely you'd get pregnant in the first place if you are taking the pill regularly. If you did conceive and have a miscarriage, the bleeding would happen a few weeks later. It sounds like your bleeding starts soon after sex.

You should, however, probably contact your doctor and get checked out since your cycle sounds like it isn't happening regularly. Mention to your doc the bleeding after sex, as this can be a sign of a health issue that needs to be checked out.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I have been taking Aviane for about 8 months. The doctor told me that I should get my blood pressure taken after every 3 packs of Aviane I take, however, I never went. I know that you will probably recommend that I go get that taken. But does it count that I have been eligible to give blood three times and actually gave blood two of the times? They take your blood pressure, hemoglobin levels, and temperature. Also, sometimes after sex I start bleeding. The bleeding is spotting at first, but then it turns into what seems like a normal period. The problem is that I am never scheduled for my period when it happens. Then, when my scheduled period date arrives, I have slight bleeding again. Am I having miscarriages after having unprotected sex?

-- Contributed by: Laura

T, since you've been taking the pill for more than a month, you shouldn't have to worry about getting pregnant. Of course, no method of birth control is 100 percent effective, especially if you are taking other medications or missed a pill but as long as you've been consistent with the pill you should be fine.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I been taking Aviane for 3 months now. After I was done with my period we had unprotected sex. Can i still get pregnant?

-- Contributed by: T

Michelle, you should continue taking the pills throughout the pack. Although your period may have come a bit early this time, your body is still adjusting to the medication in the pill. If it came very early, a week or so, ask your pharmacist or doctor if you should skip ahead to the next pack.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I started this pill & had 1 side effect the headaches..and weakness in the body. But I'm on a 28 day cycle & my period came earlier than expected, is that normal? Should I continue taking the sugar pills? (bcuz that is what i'm on now..)

-- Contributed by: Michelina

Christie, it sounds like your period is off track from where you are in the pills. You should ask your doctor or pharmacist about whether to start over with a new pack or keep taking the one you have. You might need to stop the pills for a few weeks until you get another period and then start the pills again.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

hi my name is christie. I had my period but im still take my orange pills. Its almost 2 weeks early to have my period without taking my white pills yet. can anyone tell me if this is normal?

-- Contributed by: christie

Jessica, although the pill can affect your menstrual cycle, it shouldn't be making it longer, especially not since the period started when you started the pill. Give your doctor a call to discuss.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i just started taking the aviane, which i took the first day i got my period. my periods are usaly 5-7 days long but this is my 10th day. could the pills be affecting my periods and make them longer. or is it a side affect?

-- Contributed by: jessica

Danielle, it sounds like your cycle is confused by missing your pills. I don't think you are pregnant since you are having a period but you may need to stop taking the pill for a month and restart back on track. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Last month I forgot to take my pill for 2 days, and then had sex on the second day of not taking it. I immediately took both missed pills the next day. Then when I got to the placebo pills for that pack, I skipped them and started a whole new pack cuz I read online that I should do that. I am now 3 days away from my placebo pills for this pack, and I've started bleeding. I doubt I'm pregnant, but should I be worried at all? I've never started bleeding while still taking active pills before (and I've been on Aviane for 4 years).

-- Contributed by: Danielle

Samantha, the birth control pill should be effective after the first full month that you are taking it.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Megan, the pill doesn't need to be to be taken the exact time every day, though it should be taken around the same time. Ten minutes either way won't make a difference.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

How many months, on average, does it take until the birth control will be effective? Cause the first month I was on it, my body responded the way it should have. I did not have any spotting or anything.

-- Contributed by: Samantha

Does it matter all that much if you take the pill about five or ten minutes before the usal time or five or ten minutes after?

-- Contributed by: Megan

Sudama, you should follow up with your doctor, but the late period could be related to coming off the pill. It can take a few weeks or months for a women's cycle to return to normal. If you doubt the results of the pregnancy test you should take another one.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

HI, I am Sudama. I used Aviane for five months after which I stopped (in early Feb). Eversince (its March 18 today) I didnt get my period. I tried using over-the-counter Pregnancy Test strips with a negative result. Now I am no sure why I am not getting (any signs of) periods yet. I would like ot know if this is because I stopped using Aviane (and is it normal?) or if my Pregnancy test was false Negative ?? My OBGYN is on vacation, so I dont know what to do meanwhile..... Can anyone please tell me if this is normalhad anyone else experienced this strange consequence Thanks in advance for your responses.

-- Contributed by: Sudama

Steph, missing a pill can cause irregular bleeding and spotting. Continue to take your pills as normal and your body should "catch up." If the bleeding continues for several more days, increases in amount, or as you really concerned, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I missed one pill. I remembered to take it the next day, plus my regularly scheduled pill. I started bleeding day after I took two pills and its been 2 & 1/2 days that the bleeding has continued. Is this normal & will the bleeding stop soon? I still have 10 more pill days before when my period is to be.

-- Contributed by: Steph

Hi, i've been taking the pill now for 2 months this is my third month and i've never missed a pill or forgotten to take a pill, but this month i've been really sick. I had to take antibiotics and tylenol, and i took some vitamin C pills, but i never knew that this could effect the pill. Also while being sick i would take my pill an hour or 2 after the time i picked to take the pill. i am now on my third day of the placebo pills and i havent gotten my period, i am beginning to worry. Should i be worried?

-- Contributed by: Emma

hey, I was just prescribed Aviane after suffering side-effects on Loestrin-30 (I was on this for ten years and only started having severe side-effects 4 months ago). I am now very very worried - I have read alot of really bad reviews about Aviane - is it really so awful? I am worried about starting it now!

-- Contributed by: louise

Megan, you can just take Wednesday's pill on Thursday. The only time the pills are different is when you start the week of inactive pills. The active pills all have the same dose of hormones in them so there isn't any difference.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Jaysa, you could take a pregnancy test and not worry about it being affected by the pill. Some medications can cause you to get a false positive but the pill isn't one of them. Missing your pills during the month can cause spotting and breakthrough bleeding, but hopefully that will stop as you get back on track.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I missed one pill and i started bleeding immidiately the next day i took 2 but then i missed it again and had to take 2 again....ive been bleeding now for 5 days and just now went away. If im on the pill and i want to take a pregnancy test will it b accurate? Ive heard that with some pills u can get a false positive because of some hormones they have.

-- Contributed by: Jaysa

Hello, I accidentally took Thursday's pill on Wednesday. Is that a big deal or can I just take Wednesday the next day and continue as usual?

-- Contributed by: Megan

Ripcurl, there are a lot of things that can make you weak and pale, but I'm not a medical professional and don't want to steer you the wrong way. I don't see any reason why it would be related to the Aviane, especially since you've already been on a pill. You should make an appointment to see your regular doctor.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

i have been taking aviane one monthm now form takng lutera. i got my period 3 days into the reminder pills and i have been feeling weak. i also saw i have been getting alittle pale now is this okay? my period is much lighter than normal too...let me kno0w what you think please

-- Contributed by: ripcurl

JT, since you got your period right after having unprotected sex, you shouldn't be pregnant from that experience. You would have to have sex around the time you ovulated, which would be two weeks after your period. You can think of your period as a reset button: if you get it, you're probably not pregnant from anything that happened before it.

But since this is your first month on the pill, you should still use another form of birth control for the next few weeks.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I started my birth control, Aviane, 2 days after I had unprotected sex, and concidentally with in a few hours of my period going off. And I would like to know is there a chance I could still be pregnant?

-- Contributed by: JT

Tash,

there isn't anything in the reminder pills so that shouldn't have any affect on your cycle, but since your period is now two weeks late, you should probably take a pregnancy test to rule out a pregnancy before you start a new pack.

Some women only get a very light period while others might not get a period on the pill so it's not too unusual for this to happen. But you will need to use other birth control this month.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hi, I usually skip my week of "reminder" pills and start the new month the nfollowing week. I have not had a pill in two weeks. I am nervous to start a new pack because my period has not come at all. Is this normal?

-- Contributed by: Tash

Angie, since that's the way your cycle has always been on pill, I think it's fine. You can bring it up at your next doctor visit, but it doesn't sound like anything that you need to worry about.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I take Aviane and have been on it for 2 years now. It made my period way shorter from 8 days to 3. Although I never start my period on the first day i take the green one. It's more like the third or fourth. It has always been like that for me. Is that ok?

-- Contributed by: Angie

Denise,

Yaz birth control pills may be a good match for you. It tends to lessen many of the typical PMS symptoms like moodiness and bloating and helps some women avoid weight gain.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

I need to have a new brith control method but i don't want to gain any pounds what method should I take.

-- Contributed by: denise

Kate, changes in weight is one of the side effects listed for Aviane, as is depression and nervousness. If these are causing problems, your doctor may be able to prescribe a different pill like Yaz, which has less side effects.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Is Aviane known for causing significant weight gain? I know this can be a side effect of some birth controls, but are there and pills that do not have this side effect? Also, i too have noticed some "emotional dysfunction" associated with taking this pill.

-- Contributed by: Kate

I take Aviane and I don't get my period until my third or fourth reminder pill (I think this is normal; if you miss three regular pills you ovulate and have to restart a pack, so by the third reminder pill your last active pill has completely worn off; I think this is common), and my period doesn't end until like, my third regular pill a week later. Also, the reminder pills, however low the doses probably are, contain magnesium and iron. Everything else is basically the structure of the pill, I think. But magnesium and iron are good for periods. I don't remember exactly what they do (you could look it up), but they're good things to take supplements of during a period.

I did get some emotional dysfunction from taking Aviane, probably because of the introduction of hormones, but that's never listed as a symptom. So I don't know.

-- Contributed by: Alex

DY, get out your chemistry book, because the inactive pills contain cellulose, coloring, hypromellose, iron oxide, lactose, magnesium stearate, and a few other chemicals with crazy names. What does it all mean? Just that these pills are safe and harmless. If your girlfriend is overly concerned, she can always skip the inactive pills altogether. They are only there as "placeholders" to help you stay in the habit of taking the pill once a day and to remind you when you are getting low.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

Hello, out of concern, do you know what are in the "reminder" pills? My girlfriend is considering using Aviane as a form of birth control, but we just wanted to to make we knew exactly what we were taking. Even in the "reminder" pills. It would help a great deal if you could or anyone you knew could direct me towards this information.

-- Contributed by: DY

Evalynn, you won't necessarily get your period on the first day of the green pills, it might take another day or two before it starts. If you are really concerned, you might want to take a pregnancy test just to put your mind at ease.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

So I have been taking the Aviane pills for this past month (November 4 was my first day) and I have taken the first green pill today (November 25) and my period is not here yet. I am a little worried. We have had unprotected sex two weeks after taking the pill but have pulled out each time. This is my first time taking pills, is it possible that you may not have your period the day you start the green pills?

Also before the pills my regular menstruation occurred for 3 days only. I am not sure if that would play a factor either.

  • I am also a Sunday starter.
-- Contributed by: Evalynn

MW,

when you first start taking the pill, you should use a backup method of birth control for the full first month. This is because during the first month, your body is adjusting to the hormones and it's possible that you could still ovulate. The likelihood of this happening is small, but it's still a possibility.

If you were to ovulate this month, it would likely happen two weeks after your last period, but that can vary by a few days.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

If I'm just starting on the pill and I took the first one today (Friday), how long should I wait before having sex without other protection? Will it be safe by next Friday? I'm a first day starter, not a Sunday starter.

-- Contributed by: MW

Hilary, Aviane is an effective [[pill, but like all other birth control methods, nothing is 100 percent effective. If you are really worried about getting pregnant and don't trust the pill or have a hard time remembering to take it everyday, you might want to consider using another form of birth control like condoms.

-- Contributed by: HollySwanson

LHerndz, Anytime you start taking a new birth control pill, you should plan to use a back up method for the first month. This is because your body and hormones are getting used to the new medication and it's possible that you will still ovulate during that first month.

If you do ovulate, it will probably be around 2 weeks after your period, so since you had unprotected sex well before then, you are probably in the clear. But for the rest of the month, you should use something else as an extra precaution.

I just started taking Aviane (on the first day of my period)6 days ago and had sex without any other birth control. Should I be worried about becoming pregnant?

Hi KD, if the blue pill is the "reminder" pill, it shouldn't matter. Since different versions and generics of the drug have different color reminder pills, I can't say for sure whether that's what hers were. But if they were in the last row of the pack, it should be okay.

To be safe, you might want to use a backup method until she gets her period.

Also, she is a first day starter, not a sunday one.

Hi, my wife has been on Aviane for 28 days. She missed a blue pill, but took it in the morning, her normal time is 11 at night. I heard that pill is unimportant anyways, but last night was her 28th day and we had sex without a condom. Should I be worried about Pregnancy?

Hi K, the birth control pill can cause blood clots, especially in women who smoke or who are over 35. Some symptoms of a blood clot includes pain, swelling, and redness. If left untreated, a blood clot can travel to your lung and can cause serious problems, even death in some cases, if left untreated.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to treat blood clots, but only your doctor can advise you for sure. You should see your primary care physician for more information. He or she might need to perform some tests, like ultrasounds, to find out what it is.

In the meantime, you can keep your legs elevated while sitting or laying down. You should also avoid being stationery for long periods of time.

I've been taking Aviane for about a year now. Recently about two months ago I developed a tissue infection on my ankle it lasted for about two weeks. My podiatrist gave me anitbiotics and wrapped it up for about a week. However, just last week the lower part of my shin began to hurt and I began to develp large bumps again. My podiatrist told me this time that he thought the firts infection was caused by blood clots coming from my birth control. Now I'm worried because just this morning I discovered another bump on my other leg. Should I be extreamly worried? Are these really blood clots caused by my birth control pills? If so, how dangerous are they on my legs? or could they cause much more problems to my heealth?

Hi Tash, Sounds like missing periods on Aviane is a pretty normal thing. If you don't have any other symptoms, I'd skip taking the test. But if you're really concerned, go ahead and take one.

But, taking a birth control pill is supposed to mean that you don't have to worry about getting pregnant. If the missing periods mean you're concerned about it each month, a different pill might be better for you.

I have been taking Aviane for 10 months now. I know the side effects could be missing your period. I missed it a while back and then got it the following months; however I missed it again last month and this month as well. Is this normal? Should i be worried about being pregnant?

Leisha, it does sometimes happen that women taking a birth control pill will miss a period. Your cycle can be affected by other medications, stress, or missing one of the pills. You are probably not pregnant since the test was negative but you should take another test before starting the next pack of pills. If this one is negative as well, go ahead and start the next pack. You'll probably get your period next time, but if not, see your doctor.

I am taking Aviane 28 day pack as hopefully a way to help with some of my endometrosis symptoms. I think it is helping in this aspect. I am at the end of my 2nd pack and am not getting my period and have not experienced any spotting this month but have experienced cramping. I did get my period the first pack. Is it common to not get your period at all and should I be concerned about it? I took a pregnancy test on the 3rd day of my placebo pill which was negative. Do I need to take another one?

Thanks, Leisha

Hi B, since you're in the fourth week of the pills, you should get your period now. You should not be able to get pregnant at all while you are taking the birth control pills. Since the pills work with your overall cycle, it prevents you from ovulating for the whole month, not just on the days you take the active pills.

But, since you just starting using the pills you might want to use an extra method of birth control this month if you want to be extra careful.

This is my first time using Aviane. I have completed the 3rd week and tomorrow I will start the placebo pills. Can I get pregnant during this fourth week?
