Anonymous, there have not been any studies about the relationship between Acyclovir and pregnancy. There doesn't seem to be much evidence that the drug does cause birth defects, but you should talk to your doctor about stopping it during your pregnancy.

I have been taking Acyclovir my entire pregnancy to reduce the risk of spreading the virus to my boyfriend. I am now 22 weeks, and the baby seems to be healthy, but I do not want to risk the health of the baby. My OBGYN has never discussed with me the risks of taking the medication during pregnancy, now all of a sudden I am concerned about hurting the baby in my third trimester. Is there a risk??? Have there been studies on the effects of this medication on unborn babies???

Anon, according to the Centers for Disease Control, genital herpes can be spread even when there are no signs of an outbreak. I haven't been able to find any evidence that showering would prevent an infection, so I think your husband has been lucky up to this point. It's possible that he has developed an immunity to developing it in other areas since he already has it orally.

If you haven't already addressed this with your OB/GYN, make sure he is well aware of your medication. He may also have other tips for how your husband can avoid contracting the virus.

I have HSV1 genitally and my husband has HSV1 orally. I am currently pregnant and he does not currently have HSV1 genitally. We do not use condoms (obviously) ever. I take suppressive therapy medication (acyclovir) and he takes a shower immediately after intercourse to further protect himself. We also do not have sex when I am feeling an outbreak is approaching.

Codi, you will need to talk to your doctor or a fertility clinic about this, but you may need to explore using IVF or intrauterine insemination to protect your partner. But a doctor might have other, less invasive, ways you to try first.

I have HSV Type 2. i am a female, and my partner does not have it. we have been together a while now and we want to have a baby. What are our options n getting pregnant without passing the virus to my partner since trying would mean we would have to have unprotected sex?

Hi Christine, from what I've read, there is no link between herpes and fertility issues. Herpes doesn't have any effect on the ability of the reproductive organs, so you should be able to get pregnant despite it.

Most women who try to get pregnant will do so within a year, so since you've been trying for three, it's time to see a specialist. There are many treatment options available to couples who have a hard time conceiving and a fertility specialist will help you choose the right one.

I have Symptomatic Herpes... where I get about 6-7 outbreaks a year. I am not on any medication for it at the time. I have been trying to have a baby with my partner for the past 3 years and have not been able to. I was just wondering if Herpes has anything to do witht the fact that I have been unable to get pregnant. Thank you, Christine
