Very Light Line on Pregnancy Test
From LoveToKnow Pregnancy
If you get a very light line on pregnancy test results, what does it mean? You might be confused as to whether or not you're actually pregnant. There are several common reasons why you may be getting just a faint line.
Meaning of Very Light Line on Pregnancy Test Results
Whether you take a home pregnancy test that relies on one or two lines to give you results, here are some reasons why you may be getting a very light line as a result:
- Took the test too early: Some home pregnancy tests are designed to give you results the first day you miss your period, while others don't work this early in a pregnancy. Depending on which test you use, you may get different results. If you're testing as early as the first day you miss your period, you'll need to use an early detection test to get accurate results.
- You're looking at an evaporation line: It's important to follow the directions that come with any pregnancy test you take. The results should be read in a specified amount of time to interpret them accurately. Otherwise, waiting too long to read them can give you the wrong results. It's not uncommon for an evaporation line to show up several minutes after accurate test results are reported. Evaporation lines are usually colorless-—they don't show up pink or blue as a real test result would. Instead, they're shadowy, faint lines that are simply the result of evaporated urine and don't indicate pregnancy one way or the other. To avoid reading evaporation lines, read the results of your test within the recommended time frame.
- You took the test late in the day: In addition to taking a pregnancy test before pregnancy hormones show up in your urine, you might have taken the test too late in the day. Your first morning urine will have the heaviest concentration of hormones so if it's very early in your pregnancy, these hormones may not be as concentrated as the day progresses. If you've also drunk caffeinated beverages such as coffee or colas, they might dilute your urine in early pregnancy, making it difficult for your hormones to react in the test.
Are You Pregnant?
If you get a line as a positive result, it's highly possible that you are indeed pregnant. As your pregnancy progresses, you should get a very definite line as a result on a home pregnancy test.
If you believe that you're pregnant and get a positive result, no matter how faint, you should make an appointment with your doctor. Some women have bleeding during early pregnancy that looks like a period, so if you get a line (faint or definite) on a pregnancy test but start bleeding, see your physician. It could be harmless spotting or could indicate a more serious problem.
What to Do
If you're confused about the very light line on pregnancy test results, you can always take another test at home. You should wait a few days and test your first morning urine before you've had anything to drink. This is because the pregnancy hormones will be at their heaviest at this time of day.
You can also schedule an appointment with your doctor, who will be able to give you more accurate tests.
Today's home pregnancy tests are usually incredibly accurate, even at such early stages of pregnancy. So long as you follow the directions carefully, you'll probably get the correct result, positive or negative.
