Symptoms of Conception

From LoveToKnow Pregnancy

The symptoms of conception are quite subtle, making it very difficult to determine the exact time that an infant was conceived. While the signs of pregnancy are readily apparent in retrospect, they may be easily overlooked, especially early in the cycle.

Conception signs can be confusing

Reliable Testing

Conception symptoms that reliably indicate an early pregnancy may require testing. You can opt for a home pregnancy kit or a visit to your physician. A consultation with your doctor is also a reliable approach to detecting early signs of pregnancy.

Hormones

Hormones are regulating elements in the body that change about one week after the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Progesterone and estrogen levels increase and this hormonal change is a reliable indicator of conception. Testing for this hormone variant is the ideal approach to finding this subtle early pregnancy symptom.

The hormonal changes in the body manifest themselves in other ways. Pregnancy symptoms are often connected to the estrogen and progesterone levels, as evidenced by their purpose during gestation.

  • Progesterone
    • Increases breast tissues
    • Protects the placenta
    • Maintains fluid levels in the uterus
  • Estrogen
    • Helps blood flow to the uterus
    • Protects the fetus from androgens
    • Helps promote lactation
    • Regulates other hormones

Each of these functions has an effect on the body that can be felt by the pregnant woman. The changes are significant but subtle. In addition to progesterone and estrogen, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels offer another indicator of conception.

The Pregnancy Hormone

When a woman is pregnant, the levels of hCG increase. This hormone can be detected about ten days after conception using a blood test and about two weeks after conception with a urine test.

The hormonal changes make way for the signs of conception.

Symptoms of Conception

  • A missed period is a telltale sign that you may be pregnant. However, there are other signal that indicate pregnancy earlier in the process.
  • Implantation spotting occurs after conception. The spotting is light in color, ranging from a pink to a brown color and it begins before your normal period would begin.
  • Increased body temperature occurs when you are ovulating. The change is slight, a fraction of a degree but it is an indicator that ovulation is in process. Many women use their body temperature to determine the best time to conceive. If you do conceive, the body’s temperature remains elevated.
  • Women often take more visits to the bathroom during the first trimester. Frequent urination is a result of the hormonal changes including the hCG hormone.
  • Hormonal changes also lead to tender breasts that result from the body’s preparation to feed the baby. Estrogen and progesterone work together to prepare for milk production while preventing the body from lactating until the baby arrives.
  • Feeling tired is a major complaint of women in their first trimester. The changes in the body take quite a toll, and it is necessary to rest during this stage. If you experience unexplained fatigue for several days, you may be pregnant.
  • Some women experience dizziness during the early stages of pregnancy. Lightheaded feelings and disorientation can occur in some cases, especially if you stand quickly or if you are under significant stress.
  • One of the most troublesome conception symptoms is nausea. This unpleasant symptom is important because it is designed to protect the baby from harmful substances.
  • Hormonal changes can lead to unexplained mood swings. You may feel irritable, elated, or upset rapidly and without explanation.

Dealing with Symptoms

The symptoms of conception can be problematic, but you can take steps to deal with them. The first step is to seek advice from your physician as to the best approach for dealing with the most troublesome symptoms that you experience. In addition, you can take some steps to make pregnancy signs manageable.

  • Get rest
  • Exercise
  • Drink lots of water
  • Take time to relax
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet
