Punk Maternity Clothes

From LoveToKnow Pregnancy

For a rocker at heart, finding punk maternity clothes can be a challenge. Most of your former clothes will no longer be comfortable as your belly grows and the conservative style of many maternity clothes just won’t cut it. Fortunately, there are some maternity stores that are starting to cater to moms who are breaking the mold of traditional pregnancy style.

Finding Punk Maternity Clothes

Since many times a good punk-style outfit can be made by pairing together non-punk items in a funky new way, you might be able to piece together some punk maternity clothes at your local maternity store. Shop through the items just like you would if you weren’t pregnant and look for tops and bottoms that don’t necessarily match but that seem to have that certain “punk” appeal.

Maternity consignment shops can be another great place to look since they may carry items that are somewhat out of fashion. You might be able to find some plaid leggings or layered skirts that have been sitting in someone’s closet for a few years. These rare treasures can be paired with modern clothing to make your outfit more punk. You can also hit the jackpot with items that can be easily modified, like a white maternity skirt that you can dye green or jeans that you can add patches to.

You may also be able to find great punk material by raiding a man’s closet, especially if some of his clothes might be a bit outdated. Pairing your cozy maternity jeans and t-shirts with an unbuttoned dress shirt or blazer can turn a boring outfit into something that your punk friends will approve of.

Punk Maternity Retailers

In recent years, retailers have emerged that cater to women seeking punk maternity clothes. These shops and designers realize that maternity fashion can be as different as the women themselves and that not everyone is comfortable in a bib jumper and turtleneck. For example:

  • Ruby Van: United Kingdom rocker Ruby Fay designed a line of maternity t-shirts and tanks emblazoned with eye-catching phrases like “100% Home Made,” “Love Hurts,” and “His Fault.” Other feature peace signs and skylines. Maternity hoodies and thermals are hot items that let you express your punk flair. T-shirts start at $20 and hoodies at $36.
  • Rock Star Moms: This website features original designs like camouflage tube tops and skull and cross bone tunics. They also carry a line of rock t-shirts featuring bands like the Ramones, Pink Floyd, and the Sex Pistols. Each t-shirt is adorned with retro-looking band logos, but they are often topped off with a feminine twist such as lingerie trim or spaghetti straps paired with an O-ring. Tank tops start at $29.99 and long sleeve t-shirts are $36.99.
  • Stella Maternity: This unique maternity and baby boutique offers alternative and punk maternity clothes for women who refuse to give up their unique indivual style while pregnant. From a Sex Pistols maternity halter to a Black Dragon diaper bag and a Kid Vicious baby bib, you are sure to find something that suits you.

Although you might not be able to find a whole punk outfit, many brick and mortar retailers are also starting to carry funky maternity t-shirts that let you express your own style.

Accessorize!

If you fail to find punk maternity clothes or you grow out of them before you deliver, you can always turn to fun accessories to make your wardrobe stand out. Since many woman experience hand swelling during pregnancy, you may need to forego your favorite bulky rings, but there is no reason you can keep wearing a studded necklace or thick leather bracelets. This may even be a good time to treat yourself to some new pieces.

Although your feet may swell as well, you might still be able to wear your Doc Martens right up until the day you deliver. In general, boots may even help give your tired ankles some extra support in those last few weeks of pregnancy, so you can be fashionable and feel better all at the same time.

Have Fun With Your Wardrobe

Pregnancy can be a great time to experiment with new clothing styles since you won’t be expecting a long-term commitment with any new you purchase. But, you can also find ways to incorporate your non-maternity style. If you are willing to search a little bit and get creative with your clothing, you can create a great wardrobe with punk maternity clothes.
