With the growing number of pregnant celebs, it seems everyone is watching their favorite stars for the telltale “baby bump.” Having the money and resources of a celebrity may seem like a dream come true to cash-strapped parents, but the day-to-day reality may not be so dreamy for many celeb mamas.
Media Watches Moms-to-Be
The ever-present media and paparazzi make it hard for a celebrity to keep her conception, pregnancy, or birth experience quiet. Stars often choose to keep mum on their upcoming family additions, despite growing media attention. Jennifer Lopez’s expanding waistline has been rumored to be supporting twins, but she has only recently confirmed her pregnancy, let alone comment on twin speculation.
Celebrities may also have previously spoken to the media regarding their plans for a future family. Before getting pregnant with boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, Halle Barry expressed a desire to have children to several media sources. Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross also spoke of her desire to have a family (Cross now has twin daughters with husband Tom Mahoney).
Unfortunately, sometimes anonymous sources (photographers, personal assistants, stylists, and the like) tell paparazzi and media personalities about difficulties in the conception or about the celebrity’s marriage and pregnancy. Some celebs even accidently spill the beans regarding another’s pregnancy status, like Paris Hilton did with Christina Aguilera’s upcoming birth.
The ever-present paparazzi makes it difficult for pregnant celebs to keep their expected bundle of joy a private event. Even wearing a loose shirt on a “fat day” has sparked rumors of a sibling in the oven for Katie Holmes’ daughter Suri and Jennifer Garner’s daughter Violet. If a celebrity is pregnant, she must take extreme care to schedule doctor’s appointments out of the public eye and be discreet with whom she shares her information.
For celebs who are pregnant, rumors often abound regarding the following:
- Who the father is (if unmarried)
- Gender of the baby
- Due date
- Multiples (twins, triplets)
- Use of reproductive technology (fertility drugs, IVF procedures)
- Pregnancy complications
Despite having millions of dollars at their disposal, pregnant celebs may find it difficult to enjoy their nine-month journey as they find themselves under constant scrutiny.
Celebrity Baby Names
When it comes to naming their children, celebs pull out all the stops. Although plenty have found their baby names on the Social Security list of top baby names, many others look for unique and meaningful names.
Interesting celebrity baby names that have cropped up in the last few years include:
- Kingston
- Apple
- Coco
- Suri
- Hopper
- Pilot Inspecktor
- Romeo
Despite the recent surge in odd names, some celebs are sticking to more traditional styles. Julia Roberts named her twins Hazel and Phinnaeus while her third child is named Henry. Even Britney Spears chose more conventional names for her two boys, Sean Preston and Jayden James.
Pregnant Celebs Start Maternity Trends
Despite having morning sickness, heartburn, swollen feet, aching backs, and other unpleasant body changes from being pregnant, celebs still manage to look their best while pregnant. Custom-fitted gowns and dresses are the norm for pregnant celebs at award shows and stylists make dressing even easier for the pregnant mama. But the trickle-down effect is still present when it comes to pregnant fashionistas and their followers.
When Britney Spears was pregnant with her first child, she often wore maternity tees and tanks that showed off her growing tummy. This sparked a trend for many women to proudly bear their bellies in their daily life, often sporting funky and fun clothing.
One of the biggest (and probably best) trend pregnant celebs have set off is to still dress like a regular women. Gone are the oversized t-shirts, men’s sweats, and housecoat-like dresses of yesterday’s mom-to-be. Instead, celebrity moms shop at high-end maternity boutiques for slim jeans, hip shirts, and sexy dresses. Top fashion designers noticed, and now everyone can purchase designer maternity jeans and designer dresses to wear throughout their pregnancy.
Losing the Baby Weight
Even after the baby is born, the media’s attention does not wane on the celebrity family. Within just months of giving birth, articles will appear comparing celebs pre-pregnancy bodies to their post-partum bodies. While the old adage “nine months on, nine months off” is fine for most women when it comes to losing the baby weight, it is not acceptable for most celebrities.
Celebs often start right back into their exercise and eating routines as soon as their doctor okays it. Looking good is part of how they make their paychecks, and some celebs even have appearances booked shortly after they give birth. Supermodel Heidi Klum strutted her sexy post-partum body on the Victoria Secret runway approximately eight weeks after having her baby.
Speculation regarding a combination Cesarean section and tummy tuck often follows celebrities around who lose the weight extremely fast. Most plastic surgeons do not recommend or perform this procedure due to risk of complications. However, cosmetic surgery after healing from birth and exhausting other weight-loss methods is on the rise and may be used by celebrities.
Not all pregnant celebs lose their baby fat as easily as others. Gwyneth Paltrow has called her body a “post baby nightmare” in an interview with People after giving birth in 2006. Jenny McCarthy has also struggled with losing the baby weight. In fact, McCarthy has become a spokesperson for Weight Watchers, saying she had around 60 pounds to lose after giving birth to her son.
Pregnant celebs are always in the public eye. While most people have genuine good wishes for all the moms-to-be, it can be difficult for them to have millions of people watching their every move throughout the life-altering journey.
