Pregnancy Calendar Week 5

From LoveToKnow Pregnancy

Baby

By the end of pregnancy calendar week 5, your baby is big enough to see with the naked eye. He is pear shaped and measures about .05 to .09 in length. His heart is more than half formed, and your OB provider should be able to hear his heartbeat this week. The brain has two lobes, and the cardiovascular, nervous, and reproductive systems are developing, as well as all his major organs.

You and Your Body during Pregnancy Calendar Week 5

At this stage of your pregnancy, you may not notice much difference in your weight or size. The most significant physical change may be your breasts are now tender, and you will want to wear a good support bra or jogging bra day and night to relieve the soreness.

Your hormones may be playing havoc on your emotions. Doing something as simple as watching a Pampers commercial may send you into a fit of tears. Other Early Pregnancy Symptoms, such as fatigue and frequent urination may be making it difficult to follow your normal routine. While there is nothing you can do about the frequent bathroom trips, you can fight off fatigue but adding catnaps to your daily schedule and going to bed earlier. Even if you work full-time, look at break time as rest time, and set aside part of your lunch to rest quietly.

Tips for Dad

Pregnancy Calendar Week 5 is the time for dad to take a more active role in the home. Your pregnant wife may tire easily and will need your help with your other children and the housework. She may also be suffering for food and odor aversions, which means cooking can become a tortuous activity. Be patient if she can no longer tolerate preparing a hot meal every night, or take over the cooking duties yourself.

Do not be surprised if the smallest comment from you creates strong emotions in her. She may grow angry quicker and cry over trivial matters. Remember, her body is going through major hormonal changes. Be patient. Be kind and most of all be supportive.

Doctor

If you have not seen a OB health professional yet, pregnancy calendar week 5 is a good time to schedule an appointment. The OB health professional will want to confirm you are pregnant and review your medical and family history. This will also include medical questions about your husband and his family. For example, the OB health professional will want to know if twins or genetic defects run in the families. Make sure and take along a list of any medications you may be taking, the date of your last period, the average number of days in your menstrual cycle, and a list of any questions you may want answered. Do no trust yourself to remember your questions because the visit may prove hectic.

The OB health professional may also want to:

  • Run blood tests;
  • Write a prescription for prenatal vitamins;
  • Schedule an appointment with the office manager to discuss financial arrangements;
  • Schedule regular prenatal visits throughout the remainder of your pregnancy;
  • Do a pelvic exam and take a pap smear and other tests;
  • Check blood pressure and weight;
  • Take a urine sample to check for proteins and sugar, which may indicate diabetes and kidney changes;
  • Check the size and position of the fetus and uterus.

Enter, since your period is due, you can take a pregnancy test and get accurate results. The symptoms you mention are some of the early signs of pregnancy, but they could also be a sign of PMS or the flu or a combination of several things. The bleeding might be the start of your period or it could be implantation bleeding. But take a test so you know for sure.
