Pregnancy Calendar Week 22

Your Baby during Pregnancy Calendar Week 22

By pregnancy calendar week 22, your baby is looking more and more like how he/she will look at birth. The lips, eyelids, eyes, and eyebrows have formed. Your baby is also now capable of a variety of facial expressions.

Pregnancy Calendar Week 22

As your pregnancy progresses, your baby will continue to gain weight at an impressive pace. This will reduce the wrinkled appearance of his/her skin. Currently, your baby weighs about 13 ounces and is nearly 12 inches long. At birth, most babies weigh between six and seven pounds and are approximately 20 inches long.

Internal developments for the twenty-second week of pregnancy include the maturation of the pancreas and continued brain growth. If you’re expecting a boy, his testes have begun to descend from the pelvis into the scrotum.

Your Changing Body

During pregnancy calendar week 22, you may be experiencing an increase in back pain as you struggle to carry the extra weight of your baby. Wearing low-heeled shoes and avoiding standing for long periods of time can help ease your discomfort. You may also wish to use a footstool to raise your knees higher than your hips while you are sitting. If your back pain is severe, consider visiting a chiropractor who specializes in the treatment of pregnancy-related pain.

Some women complain of leg cramps during the second trimester. This is especially common in mothers of multiples, since leg cramps are caused by a shortage of calcium or potassium your diet. Having the expectant father massage your sore muscles can provide relief. To prevent further pain, increase your intake of dairy products and other calcium-rich foods. If that doesn't work, try increasing the potassium in your diet by eating bananas and other potassium rich foods.

Since the increased weight of the uterus often blocks drainage of urine from the bladder, urinary tract infections are common during pregnancy calendar week 22. Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include a strong urge to urinate, a sharp pain or burning sensation when urine is released, and urine that is tinged with blood. If you believe you may have a urinary tract infection, your health care provider can prescribe antibiotics to treat the condition. Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice, avoiding tight-fitting pants, wearing cotton underwear, and urinating before and after intercourse can prevent further urinary tract infections. It’s also very important to wipe from the front toward the back after urinating.

Pregnancy Warning Signs

For most women, the aches and pains of pregnancy are a minor annoyance. However, some symptoms demand immediate attention. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
