Plus Size Maternity Swim Wear
From LoveToKnow Pregnancy
Plus size maternity swim wear can be tough to find, but you don't need to give up on going to the beach or lying by the pool. Swimsuits in your size are out there if you know where to look!
Selecting a Suit
The selection of plus size maternity swim wear is small. Many maternity stores don't sell plus size suits, if they even offer swim wear at all. However, you should be able to find enough suits to give you a few styles to choose from.
You'll probably find skirted suits, basic tanks, and tankinis. Some of the skirted suits have generously cut skirts which fall from above the belly and offer a little bit of sexy swing. You may also come across "swim skirts," which you can put on over more revealing bottoms. Tanks have the advantage of simplicity: no frills, no fuss, and they'll stay in place if you want to swim. Tankinis are two-piece suits with tank tops instead of bikini bras. Depending on the fit, your belly may peep out from below the top.
Choosing a Size
Most shops that sell plus size maternity swim wear will tell you to choose the same size you normally wear. The suits are specially designed to allow room for your growing belly.
If you've gained or lost weight with the pregnancy, though, you might find that your size has changed. If you order online, make sure to check the return policy before you place your order.
Cover-Ups
In addition to swim wear, you may also want a cover-up for cool evenings by the ocean or casual dinners by the pool. Your usual t-shirt or sarong might not fit over your pregnant belly. Only a few stores offer cover-ups sized to go with plus size maternity swimwear. Other options include a cotton or linen button-down shirt from a plus size maternity active-wear line. You can also try a flowing caftan, or a simple jersey knit dress made for plus size pregnant moms.
Plus Size Maternity Wear on the Web
It's easy to find plus size maternity clothes on the web, but not many stores offer plus size maternity swim wear. Take some time to search, though, and you might find that a new mom has launched a clothing business or a larger store has added to its line. Here are a few places that do carry plus size swim suits.
Motherhood Maternity
Motherhood Maternity is a one-stop shop for maternity wear, and that includes swimsuits. The plus size selection is small but the suits are pretty and practical.
Maternity4Less
Maternity4Less specializes in plus size clothes. They offer several styles and colors of plus size maternity swim wear in sizes up to 3X. You'll also find a few cover-ups and cotton dresses to wear after you leave the beach.
Plus Mom Maternity
Plus Mom Maternity searches the web for stylish, affordable plus size outfits. According to the site, they partner with other retailers so that they can offer clothes from multiple shops all in one place. They don't link to everything that's out there, but it's worth a look to see what they've found.
Motherwear
Motherwear has a special plus size section, including swimsuits going up to size 2X. Suits are simple and attractive. The models are decidedly not plus size, though, so it's hard to tell how these suits will look on a larger size woman.
PregO Maternity Wear
PregO started making maternity swimsuits in 1992. You'll find their suits at many different online stores, but only some of them are available in plus sizes. The company doesn't sell directly to consumers; try searching "plus size maternity swimwear" at Amazon.com to find a merchant that offers the plus size suits.
Nicole Michelle
Nicole Michelle Maternity is a line designed by a women who longed for fashionable clothes when she was pregnant. She offers only a few plus size swim suits, but what she does have is stylish and pretty. Several of her suits are adjustable for more or less coverage, and some even convert to regular swim suits to wear after the baby is born.
