From LoveToKnow Pregnancy

Jeans are a mainstay in the closets of millions of women, so it’s only natural that maternity jeans become an important part of your pregnancy wardrobe. Fortunately, pregnancy does not mean being stuck in generic jeans when you are accustomed to dressing like a fashion goddess.

Gone are the days when maternity jeans meant ugly, elastic waist jeans with the jeans material cut out over the stomach and replaced with a stretchy band that limited you to wearing long shirts to cover them. Maternity jeans now come in a variety colors, lengths, and best of all many styles that measure up to the latest fashions. Women can choose between straight legged or boot cut jeans, vintage wash or classic dark blue denims.

A Wise Investment

Toward the end of your first trimester, you may notice that not only is your waistline bigger, but your stomach is taunt and bending at the waist becomes more difficult. While you may be able to purchase a larger size pair of jeans, borrow your spouse’s jeans, or leave the button undone on your existing jeans and make do for now, you will find these are short term solutions. Maternity jeans are designed to grow with you, and many are designed to fit over your growing stomach or under it, giving you the ultimate comfort during your pregnancy.

How Maternity Jeans Grow With You

Depending on the style of maternity jeans you choose, one of several options will be utilized to allow you to wear the maternity jeans comfortably throughout your pregnancy. These options include:

  • Stretch denim;
  • Side panels that adjust with buckles, Velcro, snaps, or similar devices;
  • Designs with a low waist to fit below your growing stomach, which is also referred to as the bump;
  • The use of buttonhole extenders;
  • Inside waist cinch;
  • Jersey tummy panels.

Purchasing the Right Size Jeans

In general, you will purchase your jeans in the same size that you wore prior to getting pregnant; however, you will find some maternity jeans manufacturers do not follow normal sizing, deferring to small, medium, and large sizes instead. Refer to a sizing chart or try on the jeans before buying them.

When to Purchase Your Jeans

If you are picky about your wardrobe, you will want to start shopping for jeans during the middle of your first trimester. Finding jeans that fit your style, body type, and wallet may take some time. Don’t forget to check online and consignment stores for the best bargains. Remember, maternity jeans are only worn for a few months, meaning you should be able to find some real bargains on used jeans that look new.

Where to Purchase Your Jeans

There are a number of reputable retailers of maternity jeans, such as Gap Maternity. For something special, you could try:

In Conclusion

There is no reason to give up the familiar comfort of jeans just because you are pregnant. Shop around and invest in a few pairs of trendy maternity jeans and show the world that you have not lost your sense of style just because you are having a baby.

Diane, you're right, this is a tough item to find. I checked some of the designers we recommend in our Tall Maternity Clothing article but they are all coming up short (pun intended).

Since your daughter is TALL, not just tall, I wonder if she could contact the clothing labels that she usually wears to see if they have a line of maternity jeans. Other than that, I'd suggest looking for a seamstress who might be able to create clothes specific for your daughter.

I have spent weeks and weeks looking for maternity jeans for my daughter. She's 6'3 and wears a 2X. I have always had problems finding jeans long enough but it is impossible to find maternity jeans that have a 37" inseam. If I find the 2X, everyone's idea of "Tall" is no more than a 34" inseam. If I find the inseam, the jeans come no larger than a size 20. Most of the jeans we have found once you get into the plus sizes they get longer in the crotch instead of the leg. We are looking to find a low rise boot cut jean ... any suggestions?

Desperate!!
