Maternity Coats
From LoveToKnow Pregnancy
When a winter chill hits the air, it is too late to think about buying a maternity coat.
When to Buy a Maternity Coat
If you want the best selection of maternity coats, you need to start shopping for a coat in the early fall when the stores first put their winter merchandise on the racks. Finding a coat you like and that will fit you throughout your pregnancy may take some time, and you should not limit yourself to just your local Maternity Stores. Check at consignment shops, online websites specializing in Maternity Clothes, and auctions, such as ebay.
Maternity Coat Alternatives
If you cannot find a maternity coat that is in your budget or in a style that appeals to you, do not give up hope. A maternity coat is one of those items you may be able to do without. Consider these options:
- Purchase a men’s wool coat. Men’s coats tend to fit looser than women’s and often are more affordable. Find one that fits through the shoulders, and if you are not in the final weeks of your pregnancy, provides plenty of room to grow. Trench coats also work well for this purpose.
- Look to plus size coats for an answer. Plus size clothing is built to accommodate expanding waistlines and widening hips and are often more accessible than maternity coats.
- Stylish maternity capes, ponchos, and wraps are often designed as one size fits all and can often still be worn after pregnancy.
Maternity Store Alternatives
Maternity Stores are only one of many options to find a maternity coat. Consider these options:
- Borrow your husband’s coat and roll up the sleeves! If you are a stay-at-home mom or seldom need a coat, you may be able to make due with one of his coats or sweaters.
- Check in your area for maternity clothes consignment shops and, surprisingly, used children’s clothing stores for a used coat. Since maternity coats are often worn for only one season, you may be able to procure a used coat that still looks like new at a significant savings. Used children’s clothing stores often have a rack of maternity clothes as well. If you do not see the rack, ask.
- Thrift stores are a bargain shopper’s paradise. You may have to search a little harder for a maternity coat in a thrift store. Many thrift stores do not sort maternity clothes out separately from other garments.
- Look to a seamstress or take advantage of your own talents to sew your own maternity coat alternative. Choose a pattern such as this and customize it to fit your needs and sense of style.
- Dressing in layers may prevent you from needing a maternity coat if the climate where you live is not prone to extreme temperatures. Many women find the added body mass and hormonal changes that comes with pregnancy keeps them warmer than they would normally be.
- Borrow a coat from a friend who recently had a baby. Many women keep their maternity clothes with the intention of getting pregnant again.
