Maternity Clothing Sales: Bargain or Bust?

Finding maternity clothing sales may seem like the best thing that has happened while shopping. However, you need to make sure that you shop carefully to make your bargain worthwhile.

Maternity Clothing Sales

One of the biggest ways to save money is to buy your clothes a little bigger so they fit in the upcoming months. Use the “belly belt” many stores provide. Or, if the store does not have one, make sure the shirt and pants have a lot of give at the waistline. Check tags to see if they are marked for certain trimesters. If you are in your third or fourth month and starting to show a little, buying clothes marked for the first trimester will not be a bargain, no matter how much they are discounted. Even if they fit now, you'll grow too fast to make the investment worth the expense.

Living in a seasonal climate can make you go bust if you do not take temperature changes into mind when shopping at maternity clothing sales. Buying a bunch of sweaters in a larger style in January will not be useful if May and June are warm weather months. But, if you find an end-of-season sale in the fall, and will be pregnant in the spring, it may be worthwhile to pick up a couple items.

As with any clothing purchase, be sure to check your items over for snags, loose strings, missing buttons, or seams that have been sewn crooked. Trying items on can assure the style is one you will look good in, even if the clothing is somewhat big for your current size.

Finding a Good Sale

Sometimes the challenge is not finding the right clothes or clothes that fit, but getting the good deal. Department stores often put flyers out in large circulation newspapers. Most often the bigger ads appear in weekend editions.

If you have a store credit card, check any mailings you receive from the company. Often, credit card holders are privy to special savings or advance notice of sales that do not appear elsewhere.

Specialty maternity stores often allow you to sign up for newsletters and mailings on-line or in-store. Bookmark your favorite online websites and check back weekly to find sale items. Make friends with a clerk who knows you are a good customer, and he/she may give you a call before the next big sale.

Before heading out to the sale, be sure you know the details so your time is not wasted. Consider the following:

  • Is the sale storewide, or just in certain departments? Hitting a sale where you can pick up baby items as well is an added bonus.
  • What items are on sale? If you prefer certain brands, check the fine print. Often, designer clothing is not included in sales.
  • If you are looking to stock up on certain items, like underwear, camisoles or t-shirts, find out if there is a quantity limit.
  • Check to see if you can use coupons on sale items.

Return Policies

When buying items at maternity clothing sales, make sure you find out the return policy at the store. Things purchased on clearance often cannot be returned. Sale items usually require both the original tags and a receipt in order to get credit.

Stores may have a policy where no cash is given back; only store credit. At these stores, it is important you try things on before buying them, especially if you only found one or two items.

Be sure to keep all of your receipts and do not remove the tags until you are sure you like the item and will keep it. Holding onto the receipt until after the first wash is a good idea. If the item is damaged in the wash, you may be able to return it to the store because of the poor quality.
