Why Have a Maternity Bingo Game at a Baby Shower?

Games at a baby shower are fun for many reasons. First off, games can be a great ice breaker. Baby showers include many of the expecting mother’s or couple’s friends but that doesn’t mean that all those friends know each other. The expecting couple may want to invite coworkers, family, long-time friends, and friends from other places like the gym or special groups. Because of this, not everyone is acquainted and it can be awkward, but games like maternity bingo can help loosen everyone up.

Games are also fun and usually involve prizes, which everyone enjoys. Bingo is an especially good baby shower game because almost everyone has played bingo at some point in their life, so there’s no need to explain rules.

Lastly, a round or two of the baby shower maternity bingo game is inexpensive. You don’t need a lot of cash to throw together a good bingo game. If need be, you can even use your computer to create your own gameboards and playing pieces, just print them out and you’re all set. Even if you do purchase a bingo game, it won’t cost much.

Baby Shower Bingo Basics

If you want to create your own baby shower bingo game, all you need to do is follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose words to play with. You will need to create a stack of cards with words on them, which you can print on your computer or create on a stack of small index cards. It’s best to choose baby-friendly words, like bottle, labor, Lamaze, pregnancy, toys, teddy bear, blanket, onesie, pacifier, maternity, newborn, and so forth.
  2. Decide how many squares you want on each playing board. It can be any number of squares. You will want to create a grid on paper, like a tic-tac-toe game board.
  3. Find something to act as bingo markers – small slips of paper, jacks, pink and blue jelly beans, little white pebbles, or anything small and portable will work.
  4. After choosing your words, write or type random words into each playing board, but be sure to mix it up. If you write the words in the same order on each sheet, you’ll end up with many tie games. Most of the time, a bingo gameboard includes a free space square smack in the middle of the board.

Rules of play:

  1. Hand each baby shower guest one playing board.
  2. One party attendant, usually the host, needs to draw cards and announce the word on the card.
  3. Players listen for their words and then place a marker on each word until they have a full line of markers. Then the winner hollers out “Bingo!” and the host can hand-over a fun baby shower prize.
