Marcia Cross Pregnant with Twins
Marcia Cross pregnant? Could the Desperate Housewives actress be expecting? Rumors had been flying, but Cross confirmed her pregnancy in September. Due in April 2007, this is Cross’ first pregnancy. Her husband is stockbroker Tom Mahoney, whom she recently married.
Approximately one month after Cross announced her pregnancy, she let the world know that she is expecting twins. She confirmed this on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, telling DeGeneres that “I was sort of blown away that I was having twins, so I just needed a minute to deal with it.”
Cross on Pregnancy
Cross had made it well known that she wanted to become a mom. She had expressed no preference on how she actually had children, whether through surrogacy, adoption, or donor eggs. Fertility would be an issue for Cross and Mahoney, as Cross is 44 and Mahoney is 48. Wed in June 2006, they did not waste time trying to get pregnant.
She said to USA Today, “I don’t like the average woman being misled into thinking that fertility is something that goes on forever.”
Although she has been open about her desire to become a mom by any means, Cross has not said whether any fertility treatments were used to aid her in the quest to become pregnant. Rumors that she and Mahoney visited fertility clinics have been circling since days after their wedding. However, Cross has been silent on whether or not fertility treatments were employed to help her become pregnant.
Cross told Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America that she has been suffering from horrible morning sickness. She originally planned to be active in the Desperate Housewives storylines throughout her pregnancy. Unfortunately, that may not be a possibility for Cross. Yahoo! Entertainment reports that the nausea has only gotten worse and that Cross is suffering from some complications common to those pregnant with twins. It is rumored that she may have to lighten her workload on the series.
Will Bree Become Pregnant?
Desperate co-star Eva Longoria said at the time of the announcement that the pregnancy would be written into the storyline for Cross’ character Bree Van De Kamp Hodge. So far, show creator Marc Cherry has dismissed those rumors.
Because women having twins tend to show much sooner, Cross’ pregnancy will be harder to hide during the show taping. Studios often try to cover up the bulging bellies when they are not written into the storylines. Ways to cover up pregnancies include:
- Hiding behind bushes, large purses, or other people
- Shooting characters from the chest up
- Sitting characters behind tables
- Wearing billowy tops, tunics, or oversized coats
Another tactic used to cover up a pregnancy is to write the character out of the story for several episodes. Sending them on a trip, having a severe illness, or giving them a new job out of town are plot lines employed by writers. Law and Order SVU’s star Mariska Hargitay hid the last trimester of her pregnancy when character Olivia Benson went on a special mission with the FBI.
Cross is due just as the show finishes taping Season Three, so stay tuned to see if Marcia Cross’ pregnant state becomes another storyline for her character.
