Is It Possible for a Man to Be Pregnant

From LoveToKnow Pregnancy

Is it possible for a man to be pregnant? The short answer to the question is “no” but some unusual situations can make the topic a little complex. Exploring the question of whether males can become pregnant can help us understand reproduction, chromosomes, and modern medical experiments.

Is It Possible for a Man to Be Pregnant

We can look at the topic in a number of ways to determine whether the phenomenon of a pregnant man is possible. Considering biology, the notion seems impossible but unusual circumstances may make pregnancy in men possible on some level.

Intersex

Men and women are structurally different and this begins with chromosomes. Women have two X chromosomes and men have an X and a Y chromosome. Some individuals have chromosomal abnormalities that make gender identification difficult. Intersex individuals can have both male and female traits in some cases, making it possible for a person who is apparently a man to have female reproductive organs.

A person who has XXY chromosomes creates an unusual situation that gives rise to the question of gender identity and male pregnancies. However, the body has to have the proper environment to become pregnant, including hormones and functioning ovaries. This is not common among the intersex population.

Trangender Pregnancies

A complicated situation arises when a person born with a female reproductive system lives as a male. Many new outlets covered a story about a transgender male who became pregnant. Thomas Beatie was born female and later had surgery to appear as a man. The surgery did not interfere with Beatie’s reproductive organs.

In cases of transgender pregnancies, the female reproductive organs are intact. The ABC News story stresses that Beatie as well as any transgender pregnant person should avoid taking testosterone during the pregnancy since the hormone can cause complications in female babies.

Male Pregnancies in Nature

According to Science Daily, Male Seahorses are Nature’s Mr. Mom. The male seahorse carries the babies in this species after the female deposits eggs into the male’s brood pouch. There, the eggs are fertilized and continue to develop. Other species in the Syngnathidae family that have male pregnancies include sea dragons and pipefish.

RYT Hospital

One stunning case arises out of RYT Hospital when Mr. Lee Mingwei is the first man to become pregnant through medical intervention. The Science of Male Pregnancy outlines a procedure in which a male is impregnated using in vitro fertilization. The ectopic pregnancy is possible because the medical team placed the placenta and embryo into the man’s abdominal cavity.

Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Reproductive Medicine, Simone M. Lowell, M.D., Ph.D., is the attending physician who made this procedure possible. The process required:

  • Hormone therapy to make the body receptive to becoming pregnant
  • In vitro fertilization
  • Implantation of the placenta and embryo
  • Close monitoring of fetal development
  • Cesarean section for delivery

In essence, the male pregnancy is treated like an ectopic pregnancy in a woman. The process is extremely dangerous and RYT Hospital is not currently accepting patients for this procedure. Possible complications include:

  • Massive hemorrhaging
  • Implanted placenta attaching to organs
  • Possible loss of organs

Medical interventions to create male pregnancies are still in the experimental stage and the dangers of the procedure keep the approach out of the mainstream.

Male Pregnancies

Is it possible for a man to become pregnant? The short answer remains “no” unless the man falls into unusual categories:

  • He is a seahorse, sea dragon, or a pipefish.
  • He has female reproductive organs.
  • He is part of a medical experiment.

The subject of pregnancy in men raises many issues, including the possibility that medicine can go too far. The Message Boards are filled with emotional responses to Mr. Lee Mingwei’s ectopic pregnancy. A video archive of Lee Mingwei’s pregnancy and a podcast When Men are Pregnant provide insight into male pregnancies.

Pregnancy in men continues to be a hot topic for debate that raises as many questions as it does answers. Surprisingly, Mingwei’s pregnancy seems to have gone rather smoothly with normal fetal development supported entirely by a male body. The future of male pregnancies is uncertain considering the nature of the topic as well as the significant dangers involved in such medical procedures but it does change the way we look at male fertility.
