Is Discharge a Sign of Early Pregnancy or Something Else

A discharge isn't something all that unusual in a woman's body. In many cases, a discharge occurs because of hormonal changes in the body. Sometimes, it is an indicator of an infection or evidence of a sexually transmitted disease. If you notice a foul smelling odor accompanying the discharge or you experience an irritation, such as pain or itching in the vaginal area, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. These symptoms could indicate that the discharge is not a normal symptom. In some cases, it could be an early sign of pregnancy. Again, this can be quite normal, but it could also signal a problem.

Early Pregnancy Symptom

There are numerous symptoms associated with early pregnancy, including sore breasts, nausea, and darkened areolas. Is discharge a sign of early pregnancy? For many women, the answer is yes. This pregnancy discharge, referred to as leucorrhea, occurs because of hormonal changes in the body. What differentiates this type of discharge from other discharges? A discharge associated with pregnancy generally has a mild scent and isn't associated with much, if any, vaginal irritation. In fact, it is very similar to a discharge that occurs right before menstruation begins. It may be clear or a pinkish brown in color and is typically caused by increased blood flow and estrogen levels.

When Is It a Problem

Can a discharge ever indicate a problem? Because discharge and bleeding often go hand-in-hand in relation to hormonal changes, differentiating between what is normal and what is abnormal can be tricky. In the early days and weeks of pregnancy, it isn't uncommon to notice a mixture of light bleeding and vaginal discharge. Again, this may be your first clue that you are pregnant. However, a discharge that is bloody may also indicate an imminent miscarriage, particularly if abdominal pain accompanies these symptoms. An early pregnancy discharge could also be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when the embryo implants itself outside of the womb. This is a very serious medical condition as well.

Finding Answers

Whether you are waiting until you are far enough along to find out if you are pregnant or you simply feel like something isn't quite right with your body, finding the answers to your questions is extremely important. Your first step is to make an appointment with your doctor. While there are over-the-counter products that can help you find out if you have a yeast infection (which could cause the vaginal discharge you are experiencing), you shouldn't make the mistake of trying to diagnose yourself. Even the diagnosis of a yeast infection won't eliminate the possibility of other problems or conditions, including an early pregnancy.

Your doctor can do a pelvic examination to determine the cause of the discharge. He can also answer the question, "Is discharge a sign of early pregnancy?" He'll also give you important information regarding the changes your body may be experiencing. If you are indeed pregnant, the discharge is probably a normal bodily function due to increased secretions from the vagina and the cervix, as old cells from the vagina walls are shed. Toward the end of your pregnancy, you may notice an increase in discharge as well, especially once you lose your mucous plug, which seals the opening to your cervix.
