How to Detect Pregnancy

After conception, the pregnancy hormone hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) secretes from the developing placenta after the egg implants in the uterine lining. Each day the pregnancy progresses, the amount of the hormone should increase.

To detect pregnancy, urine or blood must show the pregnancy hormone is present. Blood tests are much more sensitive in detecting the hormone at low levels than home pregnancy tests. Most pregnant women have a level of around 25 mIU at 10 days. Most home pregnancy tests detect hCG at 50 – 100 mIU, which usually is present by 2 weeks after conception.

Finding How Early Can Pregnancy be Detected

You don't have to wait two weeks after you've ovulated to find out if you are pregnant. If you can't afford to visit your doctor each month for a blood test, you can invest in a sensitive home pregnancy test for much less money. Early Pregnancy Tests (found online) can detect hCG as low as 20 mIUs and are the most sensitive home pregnancy on the market today. The second most sensitive in detecting the pregnancy hormone is E.P.T. at 40 mIUs. Most other home pregnancy tests detect levels of 50 mIUs or higher.

Since early pregnancy tests can detect hCG at a lower level, you are able to find if you are pregnant as early as a week after you've conceived. However, there are some things you need to keep in mind when testing this early with a home pregnancy test.

The Problem with Testing Early

When you test too early, you may receive a false negative. A false negative test result means that you are pregnant but the test was unable to detect the hormone. If you wait a couple days and test again, you may get a positive test because your pregnancy hormone has increased enough for the test to detect it.

A false positive result is possible but is rare. Receiving a false positive is getting a positive test when you are not pregnant. Many times, when people think they received a false positive, they were really looking at an evaporated line. An evaporated line is due to a faulty test in which the dye runs from the control line, making it look like you have a double line indicating pregnancy.
