Books Make Great Gifts for Moms

Finding gifts for moms and moms-to-be can be a challenge. Many women aren’t into sentimental knickknacks or breakable trinkets that must be kept away from a baby’s curious hands. Fortunately, there are a number of great pregnancy and parenting books for women of all ages to enjoy.

Pregnancy Books

What do you buy for your sister or your best friend to celebrate the arrival of her new baby? Witty pregnancy books make refreshing gifts for moms-to-be.

I'll Never Have Sex with You Again!: Tales from the Delivery Room by Larry Bleidner and Irene Zutell is one of those unusual gifts for moms who are leery of the pain caused by childbirth. This hysterical compilation of personal essays will give the mom-to-be a new insight into pregnancy and delivery!

Contributors to I’ll Never Have Sex with You Again! include mothers, fathers, nurses, doctors, and friends and family of the expectant couple. There are even celebrity contributions from Nikki Sixx, Faith Hill, Lucy Lawless, and Phyllis Diller. One word of caution—this book is meant for the mom-to-be who has a healthy sense of humor. Stories about a mom whose nurse tries to seduce her husband or a mother-in-law who attempts to steal the forceps from the doctor make this book a poor choice for overly anxious women!

Pregnancy can be a miraculous experience, but it’s not always the most enjoyable nine months of your life. Vicki Iovine’s The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy makes a great gift for pregnant women who need a humorous and candid guide to the changes that are happening as they await the birth of their child.

The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy tackles tough topics like morning sickness, exercising during pregnancy, avoiding stretch marks, coping with swollen breasts, and dealing with your changing sex life. Some of her advice is a bit controversial, but modern moms-to-be will appreciate Iovine’s honesty.

Parenting Books

Parenting is a learning experience, but it’s also nerve-wracking for nervous first-time mom. Reassure the mom-to-be with a humorous parenting book.

Jenny McCarthy’s Baby Laughs: The Naked Truth About the First Year of Mommyhood is the squeal to her popular Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and Childbirth. In recent years, McCarthy has attracted an extensive fan base of women who can’t get enough of her slightly raunchy take on the trials and tribulations of motherhood.

Baby Laughs: The Naked Truth About the First Year of Mommyhood discusses coping with breastfeeding problems, recovering from the stress of childbirth, dealing with unwanted parenting advice, and finding your way as a first-time mother. It’s a great gift for moms who are feeling slightly overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for a newborn.

Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay: And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom by Stefanie Wilder-Taylor describes one woman’s transformation from party-girl to devoted mother. If you’re looking for gifts for moms who are worried about how a baby will change their lives, this book is a great choice.

Wilder-Taylor may come down hard on breastfeeding and attachment parenting, but she does encourage women to follow their hearts and make their own parenting decisions. Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay: And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom is a must-read for any woman attempting to earn the title of super-mom.
