Childbirth: Online Video

From LoveToKnow Pregnancy

For expectant moms and dads who want to preview the labor and delivery experience, there are many childbirth online videos available.

Be ready for what you'll see!

The Miracle of Childbirth

While some parents-to-be prefer to shun the idea of watching a video about childbirth, many people want to see for themselves what to expect. Most childbirth classes offer a video that is viewed during class time by the group, but some parents may prefer to watch a childbirth online video in the privacy of their own home. Doing so can provide parents the opportunity to replay certain pieces over again or skip through parts they don’t want to see. For moms and dads who are squeamish, a childbirth online video also allows them to watch and react privately.

What to Expect

One of the great things about a childbirth online video is that you can select different aspects of the birthing process that most interest you, from epidural placements and the stages of labor to the placenta delivery and recovery. You can also choose videos that showcase different ways to induce labor and breathing techniques.

If you find a video that demonstrates a particular relaxation technique that you’d like to try during your own delivery, this is perfect time to use the video for practice. In the privacy of your own home, you can check out different breathing techniques and practice right along with the women on the childbirth online video. You’ll also be able to watch how the technique works for them. It’s almost like a “test drive” for delivery.

Where to Find Childbirth Online Videos

There are hundreds of childbirth videos online that you can watch on a webpage or download to your own computer. Like most Internet content, you can see some highly produced and professional looking videos or the typical shaky camera footage shot by a happy dad in the delivery room.

While you might just want to try searching for "birth video" or "childbirth online videos" in your favorite search engine, here are some great health-related websites that offer birth videos to get you started:

  • Babycenter Video Index: Babycenter.com, the online version of Baby Center magazine, offers over 30 videos that relate to the birth experience, including videos of c-sections, induced labors, breech babies, and twin deliveries. There are also illustrated versions that show the labor process with charts and diagrams. These videos are all free after watching a brief commercial.
  • Discovery.com: At the Discovery Channel Store, there are 41 videos available for downloading, each for just $1.99. Once the video is downloaded, you can watch it as much as you want. These 30 minutes videos are episodes of the wildly popular “A Baby Story” reality TV program that airs on TLC. The episodes allow viewers to get the know the family and their plans for labor, then follows them through the actual birth.
  • YouTube: Try typing “baby’s birth” into the YouTube search engine and you’ll find a lot of free content. There are plenty of interesting and appropriate videos from families chronicling the birth of their child. But, you’ll also find stuff like cartoon characters giving birth and farm animals delivering. Choose your videos carefully if you search YouTube for childbirth online videos.

Your Own Birth Video

Many people like to capture the first moments of their baby’s life on film. After you’ve done this, you might even decide to make your own childbirth video and post it online. Before you do, however, make sure you watch the video several times to decide if you are okay putting that personal information out there for everyone to see. You may also need to get permission from anyone who appears in the video before you broadcast it.

If you decide to keep your video private, you’ll still have a wonderful keepsake to share with your child as he or she gets older.
