Stopping Yaz
by HollySwanson on November 01, 2009
Besides being annoyed by my fertility doctor’s lack of empathy last week, I was also disappointed in the response I got from her about changing my birth control pill. I’ve been taking Yaz for about three months but am concerned about the recent studies that show an increased risk of blood clots with both Yaz and Yasmin. Yaz is also supposed to help prevent breakouts and PMS, but I don’t see improvements in either of these areas. In fact, I’ve felt dizzy, nauseous, and have had a lot of breast tenderness since I started taking it in late August. I’ve taken Yaz in the past and felt fine, but that was a few years ago and my body is reacting differently to it now.
So I told my doctor all this and asked her what other pill she’d recommend. Keep in mind that I don’t need the pill for it’s birth control benefits, I just need it to keep me regular, reduce my cramps, and prevent my endometriosis from increasing. She asked me what other pills I’ve been on and the only one I remembered by name was Triphasil. I probably took Triphasil about 10 years, if not further back, and I told her that I don’t remember my experience on it. She simply wrote a prescription for Triphasil without discussing potential side effects or even if that’s the right thing for me. I’m not sure that Triphasil is right, I’ll need to talk to my pharmacist to see which version they carry since there are several generics available. My doctor also didn’t seem concerned about my concerns with the Yaz.
I don’t think I’m asking too much to have my doctor listen to me and consider my overall health. There were some other things I would have liked to discuss with her, but I didn’t feel like she’d care. I stopped taking the Yaz on Thursday and can honestly say that I already feel better. I’ve had some spotting and cramping but my breast pain and lightheadedness are gone.
