Next Step: Find a New Doctor
by HollySwanson on October 30, 2009
Yesterday’s appointment with my fertility doctor could have gone a lot better. I left feeling discouraged and, frankly, pissed off. I expected it to be an informational appointment to discuss my fertility options along with what the steps are for IVF. I had questions about other potential fertility medications that we could try after I have a laparoscopy to clean out my endometriosis. I have four vials of sperm left, which is enough for one more round of IUI. I’d still have plenty of sperm left over for IVF, since only a handful are really needed.
My doctor had other ideas about what we were there to discuss and was clearly only interested in pushing me toward the IVF. Her overall message was “save your money for 1-2 years and call us then for IVF.” I don’t feel like she was interested in talking about anything else. I told her that I don’t have a problem with trying the IVF aside from the financial aspect and that I would do it tomorrow if I had an extra $10K lying around. She was less than helpful about anything else I brought up from which pill I should take to how to treat my endometriosis (both of which will be addressed later).
I realize doctors are busy, but I expect fertility doctors to be more sympathetic when telling a woman that she probably won’t have another child unless she can come up with a big chunk of change. I’ve mentioned before that I feel like the fertility treatment process at this particular medical center was neglectful to me and the other women who went there. I’m not sure what other options are available in my area, but I’m probably firing my current practice and finding someone new.
